    Title: Crazy Razor
Subtitle: A Novel of the Vietnam War
    Author: Kenneth Levin
    Narrator: Danny T. Levin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-18-14
    Publisher: Blindman's Press
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The different reasons for participating in the Vietnam War between four major groups - the American army, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), the North Vietnamese Army (NVA), and the Viet Cong (VC) - could not be more stark. As much as one approaches it as a war like any other, its mirror opposite sees it more of what war is really about: the struggle between life and death with no compromise. There is no retreat or surrender for those fighting for North Vietnam. There are no weekend passes for R&R, no trips back home after a year, and no returns to base camp for a meal and a shower. There is only squatting hungry in the bush, waiting for the opportunity to kill or be killed - and thats it. These dualities feed off each other in ways far more significant than strategy and tactics can provide summation for. They impact human life at a visceral, horrifying level. And they are the nature of war. For Clark Coburn, being a naval officer appointed to a military advisor job in Vietnam is his chance to pad his resume with the glory and heroism it is currently lacking. There is nothing else in him: no resolve, no true belief, no call of a higher power. His motivation is driven by personal greed and self-centeredness, for as talented, ambitious, and charming as he is, he is also equal part narcissistic, shallow, and lazy.
A scathing indictment of the corruption of the human soul by war, Kenneth Levins bracingly honest and harrowing debut is reminiscent of masterworks like Tim OBriens The Things They Carried and Bao Ninhs The Sorrow of War. A decorated combat veteran whose his own experiences in Vietnam are combined with the personal interviews of North Vietnamese veterans, Levin deftly explores the nature of man amidst the chaos and horror of war. As illuminating as it is disturbing, Crazy Razor demonstrates with stark clarity that the real villain in waris war itself.

    Worst book ever
The dialogue is almost always juvenile. The narrator didn't help. It had a few high spots that I kept thinking it would get better but fell into grade school language.
    What a piece of crap!
What would have made Crazy Razor better?
    A narrator with some talent.
Would you ever listen to anything by Kenneth Levin again?
    Nope!
How could the performance have been better?
    A better narrator.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
None at all. A waste of a credit.
    Any additional comments?
I couldn't deal with the monotone narrator. Stopped listening after 20 minutes. All the characters sounded the same. Thank you Audible for not letting me return this POS.

    Title: Heirs of Honor
    Author: E. F. Grossman
    Narrator: Joel Richards
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-14-14
    Publisher: E.F.GROSSMAN
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The chaos of war is a horrific background for coming of age, a trial by fire testing all who experience it, and changing them forever.
Contrary to Government denial during the Vietnam War, the U.S. Army regularly sent Special Forces sniper teams into Laos and Cambodia. Their assignments took them deep into enemy territory. Many teams never returned.
Heirs of Honor is the memoir of Lucky, the youngest member of one of those killing teams. A hero worshipping kid awed by the more experienced men around him, he was more than willing to prove himself to them and ignore the damage to his young soul.
He was only 20 when introduced to the Special Forces team, and star-struck at being invited to join them. Their journey into the madness that only exists in war is chronicled in Luckys journals, as well as the toll on his spirit, as he grows from innocent High School kid to scarred warrior. Heirs of Honor is a story of men enduring the horror of war, and their struggle to retain their sanity, as they come of age.

Enthralling, well written and well performed.
I highly recommend this book. It is well written and well presented, too. I was too young to be drafted for Nam but have the utmost respect for those who were forced to participate. The author presents a vivid portrayal of what it was like. I wish all those who went and are still with us respite from the nightmares that still haunt them. This was absolutely worth the time and expense.
    Very good
This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.
This is one of the better titles read in a while, listening to this book took me into the pages and into the action and eyes which pulled my heart so I would invite my friends to enjoy it as I did
    As real as it gets
What made the experience of listening to Heirs of Honor the most enjoyable?
The narrator succeeded in getting me totally caught up in the story... and what a story!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Now I think I understand my relatives who were Vietnam War vets a lot better.
HEIRS of HONOR is certainly FANTASTIC!!!
If you could sum up Heirs of Honor in three words, what would they be?
    FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC
What was one of the most memorable moments of Heirs of Honor?
Getting away from the enemy SNIPER, and tumbling down the hill after the intended bullets
near miss. LUCKY lost his radio allowing no warning communication with his team mates as the sniper closes in on them.
Have you listened to any of Joel Richardss other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first time I've heard Joel Richards performance and I give him a five star rating for his ability to really put more action into the reading.
If you could rename Heirs of Honor, what would you call it?
Heirs of Honor is a tremendous name. Just to throw another name out there would be:
"LUCKY SNIPER". I think 'HEIRS of HONOR' is very fitting.
    Any additional comments?
This HEIRS of HONOR is riveting. The horor of war is ALIVE in this 'book'. E.F. GROSSMAN
put the smell, sounds, blood and guts along with the sweat, tears, blood spatters and explosions all through the book. He overloaded the helicopter and you can feel the strain of getting airborne while grossly overloaded in the life and death struggle both in the air and on the ground.

I expected an indepth anaylsis of the author: his previous books, his rersearch for The Book Thief, why he wrote the book, personal ties, if any, to the events described. None of these aspects were discussed to my satisfaction. I did miss the fact initially that it was only 23 minutes in lenght. My mistake.

Durée: 4 hrs and 1 min
    Langue: Français
    Date de publication: 08-16-13
    Éditeur: Frémeaux & Associés
    Genres: Fiction, Historical

If you were bewitched by The Night Circus If you were mesmerised by A Discovery of Witches If you were enthralled by Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell You will be enchanted by The Golem and the Djinni.
Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master, the husband who commissioned her, dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York in 1899.
Ahmad is a djinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop. Though he is no longer imprisoned, Ahmad is not entirely free - an unbreakable band of iron binds him to the physical world.
    Critic Reviews:
Set against the vivid backdrop of New York Citys immigrant neighborhoods in the late 19th century, Helene Weckers tale of two fabled creatures has the intimate feel of a story handed down from generation to generation (Deborah Harkness, author of A Discovery of Witches)
The author makes you care enough about the humanity of these magical spirits to not only see them through to the end but also to regret that youve reached the last page (New York Times)
A continuous delight provocative, atmospheric, and superbly paced (Boston Globe)
The Golem and The Djinni are among my favourite fictional people (Washington Post)

    Enthralling
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book kept me up at night, as it was so gripping I couldnt stop listening. How I wish there was a sequel, as Im still hung over on the characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The djinni and the golem were both mysterious in their own way, making you want to know them in every detail
    Extraordinary
Once in many years does a gem such as the Golem & the Djinni come to light.
It is magical, moody & atmospheric, I did not want it to end, the author is very gifted her story line rare I trust that she writes more novels in the same vain, the book was exceptional.
Kept me enthralled until the end
There are some books that I think are ok and I sometimes listen to them on my commute to work and some I can't wait to get back to because I am desperate to know what happens next. This book is most definitely in the latter category. Never mind the commute, I listened to it at home, on the train and in the car and managed the full 18 hours or so within a month. I have always loved Arabian Nights type stories with Djinn so stretching my imagination to include a Golem was not too difficult. The only negative thing I can say about it was I got a bit lost with the Djinni ' s story of what was the past and what was the present but it all fit together at the end. I have a very visual imagination and saw and felt it all. Loved it!!
    Original and engaging
Brilliant lead characters who are unusual misfits. The narrator gives an excellent performance and is easy to listen too. Set in New York the heroic lead characters are outsiders and a subplot explores what it is to be different. It is really a fairy story come to life though, touching and very enjoyable.

    Members Reviews:
Very good story with some interesting and unexpected history
An interesting story about Cuba in the days just before the revolution when Fidel Castro had to choose between a career in baseball or a revolution. There's a lot more than just that. It takes place in the present day with flashbacks to those days.
When I first heard what the story was about I thought it was too bizarre an idea to be interesting until I found out it was probably true. Castro, according to a lot of USA baseball players playing off-season in Cuba, was the best pitcher they ever saw. He was hired by an American team but things began to happen before the winter was over and he made other career choices. Castro denied that he had played baseball in his youth but it's remembered by too many people to not be at least likely.
I have little interest in sports and wouldn't have read a baseball book if that's what it was. However, that's just the focus of the one of the threads in this story. This is an intriguing novel about fascinating people in strange situations that goes far beyond baseball. It's a love story and a story about politics and a carefully researched historical novel as well as a very good present day story. There is much to enjoy here.
I'm describing this from memory, having listened to it in an audiobook when it was first published. I was in an internet listserve at that time in which the book's narrator was also a participant. We had had a number of discussions about books and he had just finished narrating this one and he thought it might suit me even though I had initially reject it as a "sports book", which it actually isn't. So I took his word and read it and he was right.
I recently bought the Kindle version and I plan to re-read it soon.

    Five Stars
    Good fiction book.
    Interesting idea....weak writing
The concept of a novel based upon rumors of Castro's being scouted by the major leagues is a great idea, the reason I bought the book. However, I found the writing to be simplistic, and lacking in detail. It was very difficult to picture any scene in the book because of the missing development. Also, as baseball writing goes, there's just not much there...it almost seems gratuitous.
    Interesting premise brought to life.
I don't usually read novels, but this one caught my eye. You've read a description of the plot elsewhere on this site. Wendel does a really nice job of bringing the pre-Revolutionary era of Cuba to life -- a really good sense of place here. The story is told in straight-forward fashion, no complaints here, and moves right along to a worthwhile conclusion.
A man's love for life, Cuba and baseball
Castro's Curveball is a such an enjoyable read.
