    Publisher's Summary:
Cattle Kate is the only woman ever lynched as a cattle rustler. History called it "range-land justice" when she was strung up in Wyoming Territory on July 20, 1889, tarring her as a dirty thief and a filthy whore.
But history was wrong. It was all a lie.
Her real name was Ella Watson. She wasn't a rustler. She wasn't a whore. And she'd never been called Cattle Kate until she was dead and they needed an excuse. She was really a 29-year-old immigrant homesteader, lynched along with her husband by her rich and powerful cattle-baron neighbors, who wanted her land and its precious water rights. Some people knew the truth from the start. Their voices were drowned out by the all-powerful Wyoming Stock Growers Association. And those who dared speak out - including the eyewitnesses to the hangings - either disappeared or mysteriously died. There was no one left to testify against the vigilantes when the case eventually came to trial. Her six killers walked away scot-free. But the legend was stronger than the truth. For over a century, newspapers, magazines, books, and movies spread her ugly legacy.
Now, on the 125th anniversary of her murder, the real Ella comes alive in Cattle Kate to tell her heartbreaking story. Jana Bommersbach's debut novel bares a legend central to the western experience.

    Terrific story of a strong
Terrific story of a strong, maligned woman. I love that it is based on a real event in history, the hanging of an innocent pair of homesteaders in Wyoming. The press of the time, just as journalists now, were quick to blow up the story and make it as if Ella Watson was a prostitute and a cattle rustler. This is a different view of the old West as told by a master writer. I especially like all the notes and references at the end of the book. Thank you, Jana, for another excellent book!
A MUST for those who like knowing the truth not sugar coated
From tears to laughter back to tears the details oh my all I can say is Jana did her homework when she wrote this. I could not put it down but I am a western history type of person. However everything I have read that Jane has published has been better than 5 stars I cannot wait for her next book will see you in Jan in Prescott Jana keep on writing ..
Good Read, a cruel lesson in history with a lasting impact.
It was very sad. It gave good insight into life in Wyoming Territory. It started out with a little bit too flowery discriptions of mundane everyday life from a very feminine perspective but I guess that was intentional in order to accurately portray the real personality and lifestyle of the main character who was later the target of unwarranted slander and murder.

I loved this book about Cattle Kate and the history that it portrays on the frontier during he homesteading era. Jana Bommersbach's research also separates facts from fiction and tells the real story of Ella Watson. I highly recommend the book.

    Well done, Rhoda!
I have been following Rhoda's progress and find each book better than the previous one. Elaine Baden is an outstanding reader who adds many dimensions to each book!
    Love 'em! Keep them coming

    An Epic Masterpiece
Would you listen to Newborn Nazi again? Why?
No, I wouldn't listen to this book again because it is a really long story. However, this does not speak for how great the book is. It is over 9 hours of quality reading and superb material.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Newborn Nazi?
Without revealing too much - the most memorable moment of this book was when Hedwig revealed that she knew what had really happened to her parents.
Which character as performed by Elaine Baden was your favorite?
Hedwig was the best presentation of a character by the voice over talent. She presented her as strong yet vulnerable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The moment in the book that particularly moved me was the event of the Hindenburg disaster and how it affects the family. I really didn't see that coming.
    Any additional comments?
This was a great story! The reader did a decent job, but I did notice a few punch ins that were very obvious and stuck out. Otherwise, this epic story is an awesome listen and well worth the investment!
    Wonderfully emotional.
    Any additional comments?
Newborn Nazi is another wonderfully written novel by Rhoda DEttore. The novel is about a German family who suffers much during Hitlers rule. There are many stories out there both true and fictional about the lives of the Jewish people during that time, and those stories, more than any other, should be told, but I think seeing the world from a German point of view is also helpful because we dont live in a black and white world were everything we are told or even see is true. The only other novel Ive read like this is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. In Newborn Nazi, we see the German world through Hedwig, a young German woman, and her brothers: one who is forced into a Nazi Youth camp and all but brainwashed into believing Hitlers propaganda, one who is blackmailed into complying with a corrupt government , and a third who refuses to acknowledge what is happening in his home world, as he escaped to America before Hitler cemented his control. We see how easily people are coerced into lying to their family, spying on their family and friends, committing murder, and even turning on their country when those they love are threated. We see how this coercion, these lies and secrets can crumble lives and bring an entire race of people to their knees.

In the worst of times, good intentions go awry. One mistake can ruin a life. One mistake can transform it.
A government forestry camp set deep in the mountainous forests of the Pacific Northwest might not seem the likely place to find redemption, but in 1935, Park Hardesty hopes for just that. Blaming himself for the fiery accident that caused his brother's disfigurement and the death of the bootlegging woman he loved, planting trees, building bridges, and mentoring tough, homesick New Jersey boys brings him both penitence and the renewal of his own self-worth. When he wins the love of Kate Alford, a local naturalist who envisions joining the Forest Service - which allows only men - he also captures the ire of a camp officer who refuses to let her go. Just when he is ready to seek his brother's forgiveness, he is falsely accused of rape. Every aspect of his life he has tried to rebuild is put in jeopardy.
In the end, the only way he can defend himself is to tell the truth about his brother, but he risks being kicked out of the camp. Worse, he could lose Kate's love forever.

If you could sum up Tree Soldier in three words, what would they be?
    Authentic Historical Fiction
    Any additional comments?
Tree Soldier was a pleasure to listen to. I loved Jim's accent for the Jersey Squad - having grown up out east myself. It was easy to get lost in the story, to feel surrounded by sweeping landscapes, or hang on the hope of characters who came to life and rang true. My only critique is that Janet sometimes tells what's about to happen before it actually does, removing some of the suspense. That being said, I still give this story a strong recommendation. Listeners won't be disappointed!

    Language: English
    Release date: 07-07-14
    Publisher: Katzenhaus Books
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Beyond All Priceis a historical novel, based on the real life story of Nellie M. Chase, a Union nurse during America's Civil War. History books have recorded only a few lines about her experiences as a Civil War nurse. She left no personal letters and no formal records, but those whose lives she touched remembered her as an angel of mercy. Her story, told here by a trained historian, is factual whenever events can be documented. Fictional descriptions, conversations, and transitions strive to reflect the true nature of the time in which she lived and struggled.
She had eloped at the age of 19 with a man she later discovered was a "drunk, a gambler, a liar, a forger, and a thief". She was strong enough to escape from that potentially abusive relationship and resourceful enough to find a job as wardrobe mistress for a theater. The woman with whom she shared a single room in a squalid tenement took an overdose of opium in an effort to escape a life of prostitution. Nellie joined the Union Army, because life in the midst of a war seemed safer than the one she had been living.
She found a home with the 100th Pennsylvania Regiment, a band of volunteers whose nickname was The Roundhead Regiment because of their strong religious beliefs. She believed so passionately in her country's cause that she displayed a soldier's bravery. Her skill and compassion led one of her patients to write, "Even here, amid the roar and carnage, was found a woman with the soul to dare danger; the heart to sympathize with the battle-stricken; sense, skill, and experience to make her a treasure beyond all price."
She was equally at home managing a southern plantation full of abandoned slaves, a battlefield operating station, or a 600-bed military hospital. But after the war, her deep-seated need to dedicate her life to a worthy cause continued to drive her efforts until she faced an enemy more lethal than war.

Nellie Chase comes alive in this Audible book
Would you consider the audio edition of Beyond All Price to be better than the print version?
Actually, they are about equal. That said, I was amazed at how quickly I was drawn into the story, wondering what happens next. Hearing the descriptions made a better vision of them in my mind.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Nellie Chase, the main character. Because it was mainly about her and her adventures.
What does Adrianne Price bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Adrianne Price definitely brought the characters alive. She has an amazing talent for having a perfect voice for each character and situation.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
All good. That's one of the skills the author has down pat... there is not a dull chapter and the story stays alive.
    Any additional comments?
    I recommend this to others.

    Members Reviews:
    Sequel, please!
Set in ancient Athens, this is a mix of mystery and romance. Hestia was born a bastard and has lived a life of servitude as a house slave. Her master, Agathon, reveals certain secrets upon his deathbed. Agathons widow, Melaina, sells Hestia to a local slaver. She in turn is bought by a wealthy man, Lycurgus, who was Agathons best friend. Toss in a love interest between Hestia and Diodorus, and you have an entertaining Greek soap opera.
I very much enjoyed this book even with its flaws. While the characters and the plot were a bit predictable, it was also easy to get attached to the main characters. Hestia has an intuition about people and is often blunt enough to speak her observations. Some praise her for this and others curse her. While a slave, she doesnt simply allow life to happen to her. She makes choices throughout the book, some of which put her in danger. She does, at times, seem a bit too innocent. She has been a house slave all her life, but that doesnt mean that she was kept locked in doors. She could go to the market, chat with other slaves from other households, etc. Despite this tendency towards obliviousness, she was an engaging character.
Diodorus is also a person who makes choices, though he is under a heavy, life-long manipulation by his mother Melaina. She is the villain of this story and I have to say, there are times where she steals the scene. She was an excellent villain to hate! Lycurgus comes off as a secondary character, though he plays a few crucial cards to keep the storyline moving forward. There were a few times that I felt certain events were contrived, were a little too convenient in popping up when they did. There were 2 chance meetings that I felt were unlikely to have happened without the authors pen pushing them forward. Still, even with that, it was a fun listen.
The setting was a lot of fun too. I definitely felt like the characters were in ancient Athens. There were plenty of references to clothing, social customs, government policies, and food from that time period. The setting itself was so well done it was a character itself. Over all, I very much enjoyed this book. If Suzanne Tyrpak is this good today, imagine how refined and entertaining her stories will be in the future.
Narration: Laura Jennings was an excellent pick for this story. She made Hestia come to life. I have to say that her performances as Melania were excellent too. She also had a range of male voices which made it easy for the listener to keep all the characters separate.
    it's actually "Aitera".
Interesting story. But it has some historical flaws.

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In Peter Schilling's wonderful novel, the extraordinary baseball season of 1944 comes vividly to life. Bill Veeck, the maverick promoter, returned from Guadalcanal with a leg missing and $500 to his name, has hustled his way into buying the Philadelphia Athletics. Hungry for a pennant, young Veeck jettisons the team's white players and secretly recruits the legendary stars of the Negro Leagues, fielding a club that will go down in baseball annals as one of the greatest ever to play the game. Here are the behind-the-scenes adventures that bring this dream to reality, and a cast of characters only history's pen could create. The End of Baseball is the most rollicking, free-spirited baseball story in years, the unvarnished truth of that incredible season and the men who lived it.
    Members Reviews:
20th Century Social History as Told Through Baseball
This book is a hoot. It's a "What If?" What if every fan's favorite rouge team owner Bill Veeck was able to make good on the plan he tantalizingly referenced in his autobiography "Veeck as in Wreck"? What if he had been able to buy a major league team during World War II and stock the entire roster with Negro League All Stars? This book is the entertainingly plausible answer. Veeck is a big-hearted, headline-grabbing, authority-provoking entrepreneur. The players--who a good baseball fan recognizes from the Negro Leagues and the early years of MLB integration (and a certain Cuban player who this reviewer heard tall tales about when he was a little kid)--are nicely characterized: Some are well-adjusted and pleasant, others are cranky and churlish, some have big egos, one has a terrible drug problem. A variety of WWI-era personalities, inside and outside of baseball, round out this satisfying tale. Is it too late to throw Kenesaw Mountain Landis out of the Hall of Fame?
The End of the Book: Disappointing
If you buy this book with the hope of feeling good when you finish it, don't buy it. If you buy it thinking it will truly reflect how good the best of the old Negro League stars would have been, and would have definitely destroyed their major league competition (which was weakened by star players who were drafted to serve in WWII), you will be disappointed.
The book does expose what a racist and low-life that Commissioner Landis was. It exposes that St. Louis has not always been the best baseball city in America, once having some of the most racist fans in the country. It exposes J. Edgar Hoover making a mockery of civil rights and liberties.
In summary, the book probably accurately depicts how difficult this country would have made life for these black ballplayers had Bill Veeck been allowed to integrate baseball with a bang. But it completely misses the mark in letting the black players with superior talent to lose to the lowly St. Louis Browns (yes, I know that the Browns did win the pennant in 1944). I wonder why the author chose to end his book with one more insult to the Negro League greats?
    A really good baseball/social/historical novel
An interesting "account" of the first season of integrated major league baseball. Peter Schilling's novel keeps your attention, for the most part, by devising a page-turning baseball season and by focusing on a few terrific, real-life characters, including Satchel Paige, Bill Veeck, Josh Gibson, and Roy Campanella.

Lots of action but not much of a finish
    Part Love Story, Part Western
This was a good Western and I think a good start to the Medal series. Joel Ryan is a believable and relatable character who needs to start over after returning from the war. Mostly set in Montana, the former soldier starts a new life as a family man which is upended during a rampage. The revenge story is certainly interesting and the characters and plot are full of historical details which I found interesting.
    Historical Timeline Mess
HMMM.....I have not an will not read this book because it appears to be a Historical Timeline mess! If it had been set after the Texas war of Independence it might be more believable. However the "wild west" of post revolutionary times was what we now call the Midwestern states. Montana was not even a part of America until The Louisiana Purchase which was made by Thomas Jefferson in1803! from Napoleon Bonaparte. At that time, think The Lewis and Clark Expedition, Montana was populated by Native Americans and French Trappers.
