What an amazing conclusion to the series!
What an amazing conclusion to the series. I would guess that you could pick this up by itself and it would be a good read, but what history and intrigue you would miss. Hugh and Jack finally see eye to eye, and while the story doesn't really begin with the Sparrowhawk, it sure does end with her.
Throughout the series I wondered why the ship that played such a small role in the story had such a prominent place in the title. During a play you don't really think about the curtain but it plays a vital role, opening and closing to set the scene or to bring in a new or returning character. Just as the curtain with its opening and closing sets the play, the Sparrowhawk with her journeys across the Atlantic, back and forth, forth and back, sets this tale of discovery.
With this conclusion, almost everything comes full circle. It seems almost that we travelled the around the world to return to where we started. After such a journey however, it is the traveler who has changed and the destination may look the same on a map, but it is also changed by the time and perspective.
American History comes alive...Finally!
Brilliant, maybe provocative to some, this series of 6 books is a major achievement in historical fiction. With vivid, believable characters Cline envelopes the story of the American Revolution in an enlightening aura of intellectualism, fierce love and loyalty, and ultimate sacrifice for a cause even deeper than the birth of a country. And, yes, there are also despicable, hateful characters and plenty of others that are mere fodder for disdain. We all know that America prevailed in the end, but those that read this amazing book will also finally know the deeper roles and natures of Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson and the far greater intrigue of the Revolution that a mere dumping of tea. Long live Lady Liberty! Bravo, Mr. Cline!

I am by no means a literary critic, but I really enjoyed this whole series for the adventures of Hugh and Jack in an inspiring historical setting. I conveys a whole range of emotions at different moments, and I think this series could be great for adaption for television if done in the right way. Won't hold my breath for that considering the radical stand for reason and individual freedom this series conveys.
The end of a great series
This brings to close a wonderfully told story of two characters who were there at the very beginning and a little before. Their adventures and struggles, physically, emotionally and intellectually will give you new a new perspective on the relationship of Briton and her colony at the time of the revolution.
