Soooooo much back story. Infodumps galore
Um... I don't want to be scathingly mean, but I truly think the author could have used a decent writing group who were willing to give honest and blunt feedback. I think this book needed a few more rounds of edits before the publish button was pushed.
The premise is a fun idea. Female assassin? Cool! Forced to do a job because of blackmail? Fun! But... oh boy. The writing itself could use some serious fine tuning so that things make more sense, the back story isn't so overwhelming, and the pacing speeds up.
Soooo much back story. The pages and pages of infodumps could be reduced to a few clever lines of dialogue via an argument between characters and some emotional responses to environment or other people. I ended up skipping the flashbacks and memories of past events. I don't need to know the minute details to figure out motivation. Man is upset over a king's decision = wants him assassinated. Simple enough; I don't need ALL of the gory details about all of the whos invovled, every single why, and the confusing where's and whatfores included.
It was difficult to get through all of the superfluous information to figure out just who I was supposed to be rooting for and why I should care. Can't say I ended up caring at all.
It's commendable to have written a novel and finished it. It would be even more commendable to have paid an editor to go over it after having serious feedback and discussions with a good writing group. It's not always easy to hear what needs to be tweaked, especially when it's your favorite bits, but oh honey. :( This story deserves the time and care that a couple of good rounds of editing would do for it.
    A good read
Some trouble trying to make sense of the geography at first; however, not sticking to a real world atlas got me over that hurtle. The story itself is very interesting with a nice twist at the end.
    Excellent Read!
I know Tonya and was leery of reading her book afraid I may not like it. But I WAS WRONG! I loved it I stayed up late several nights cause I had to know what happened! Its a great read with excellent pacing and such entertaining and rich characters. I loved the rich world she created and the details used to make it stand out. I cannot wait to read the second book to learn more about the characters and places mentioned! I highly suggest this book.
I read a book, and I like it. Enthralled by Thine Enemy's Eyes!
I've read a book, and I like it.
Like it so much, have read # 1, # 2, # 3, part way through # 4 in the series.
Join Tonya Adolfson as she wields her pen to great effect in Thine Enemy's Eyes, a tale of epic intrigue, subtle magic, nuanced characters on fantastic journeys. The depth and diversity of her characters speaks to the writer's ability, imagination, and the series.

    Title: Grist
Subtitle: A Story of Life in Oregon Country, 1835-1854
    Author: RC Marlen
    Narrator: Andrew Dawson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-15-15
    Publisher: Rosalie Marlen Schele
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Denied recognition and acceptance by the white people in Oregon Country, Margaret Jewett Bailey, the first novelist of the Northwest, faded into oblivion after an attempt was made to destroy all copies of her novel. Although she and her husband William J. Bailey arrived in the mid-1830s and worked beside well-known historic figures as Jason Lee and John McLoughlin, today few know of the Baileys. Why? Their story is explosive.
In 1835, William arrived at the Methodist Mission with a long tomahawk gash in his face and later would avenge the attack; in 1837, Margaret was among the first seven white women to arrive by ship from eastern United States, and she quickly made enemies of the missionaries but friends of the Kalapuyan Tribe. Their story presents surprising views of historical figures and events from a perspective not usually seen.
Although the dialogue and one fictional family are creations of the author RC Marlen, events in this exciting novel were written to show the accurate history of Oregon Country, 1835-1854.

    Great book about Oregon Country
This is a great book. This is about three different stories of settlers in the Willamette Valley, pre-Oregon Trail.
William Bailey, an early fur-trapper, with an extensive education, who becomes a physician in Oregon Country.
Margaret Jewitt Smith Bailey, a missionary, who is a fascinating personality. You both love and hate her. She was judged by the morals of the time, and has many strengths and weaknesses.
Sawalha, an Indian woman, who is an amazing person, with an ongoing legacy.
Great book. I did the audio version, and enjoyed it immensely.
    Excellent Read

Great book about a story in Oregon history made where you can feel what the characters were going through and able to look up where this took place in the state

    Title: Whispered Secrets, Whispered Prayers
    Author: Donna B. Mack
    Narrator: Leslie Cates
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-01-15
    Publisher: Donna Mack
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Whispered Secrets, Whispered Prayers is a gritty, marrow-deep story of one of the families of Germans from Russia who settled on the American Prairie. Urs Wagnor is a sometimes crude and prideful tenant farmer with a fierce love for land that should be his. Instead, in the spring of 1946, in the wake of farm failures and foreclosures, his fields belong to "Humpy" Chris, a calculating landlord deformed in body and soul. Urs doesn't own his land any more than he owns the heart of his wife, Margaret, who loves the god that sustains her, just as it sustained her German peasant ancestors who settled and struggled on the Russian steppe a century before. Now, Margaret is pregnant again - and Urs wants a son.
The simple words and sentiments of common people belie the enormity and danger of human passions and their twisted and hidden source. Only their child, Annie, has the innocent powers of insight, imagination, and compassion that might save them from themselves. She perceives the desolate wind-flattened prairie as a never-ending expanse of death and rebirth, peopled with creatures of mythical dimensions.
Whispered Secrets, Whispered Prayers is a psychological, character-driven story in the tradition of Kent Haruf's Plainsong. It also recalls the terse, tense drama of O.E. Rolvaag's classic Giants in the Earth. Here, the vast dome of ever-changing sky shifts with the narrative from dreamy solitude to churning conflict. The author, Donna B. Mack, is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts and has a MFA in creative writing from UAA.

    Wonderful read!
Many years ago I heard a teacher say that conflict was necessary to a story, and felt an inner protest. Although there is struggle and pain in this novel, the main characters are revealed to us as we enter their world, what they see, feel, think. This is not a tale of winners and losers, but of characters struggling to become themselves, struggling to move out of fear into love, a la A Course in Miracles. In addition, the reader is treated to detailed and poetic observation of their North Dakota world as well as the language, customs and food of the Germans who emigrated to Russia then came here. I found this a stunning,
beautifully written book that I will happily recall for a long time.
A poignant study in the paradoxes of life.
Donna Mackâs new novel, WHISPERED SECRETS WHISPERED PRAYERS, tells the poetic story of one German immigrant family who struggles against all odds to survive the hardships of farming on the flatlands of Midwest America in 1947.
The novel is peppered throughout with memorable characters brought together after enduring unimaginable heartbreaks. Margaret and Lars, their children Danny, Lizzy and Wayne; Humpy Chris and his beautiful young wife Juanita, and Urs Wagnor and his young daughter Annie, all become enmeshed in a struggle to survive not only the shadows from their respective pasts, but from the hidden mysteries of the human condition.
An amazing command of metaphor, imagery, dialogue and storytelling will entrance readers in this seemingly simple story expertly woven with vivid detail and intricate descriptions. Ms. Mackâs occasional juxtaposition of complimentary scenes depicts the skill of an accomplished writer. The human archetypes we can all relate to become the secret variables her characters must all learn to rise above. Ms.

At first, it's just a way to fill the lonely nights while her husband, staff sergeant Holden Kanzinzki, is away fighting in World War II. Yet when Maybelle discovers that the quilt is made from scraps of material that can be traced back through her family heritage, the project is suddenly much more important.
Then word comes that Holden is missing in action, and with little else to do, Maybelle clings to the quilt as much as to the hope that her husband is still alive. As neighborhood friends gather around Maybelle to help her through the unknown days and nights ahead, it is the quilt that becomes a symbol of her unflagging belief that Holden will return - to her, to their home, and to their quilt-covered bed.

    Books of War
This year 2015 we are being deluged with books of War, in particular the First World War. This one is a little different than most, as it follows the stories of the Irish mostly non-involvement, the resentment of the British involvement & the work of the IRA in actually working for Hitler. It is a well-written story that tugs at the heartstrings at times. At some stages one is wondering just who is on which side - who are the spies, and who are not. The prudishness of the time also comes across, such as when American Irish Mary plans to meet with her British Officer friend for a weekend, staying in separate rooms but still under close scrutiny & disapproval by hotel staff & other guests.
They were also urgent times, trying to catch brief moments together with the perils of war always there ready to snatch your loved one away.
I thought the ending came rather abruptly & left me wanting more. It is a book I would recommend especially to those who like historical fiction.
    Highly recommended
John Kerr has woven many strands of the real events of World War Two into a well-paced narrative, yet never lets the historical overshadow the fictional. Without becoming mired in explanation and exposition, he keeps the personal romantic story front and center yet still grounded in fact. Maintaining that balance is one of the most difficult things to manage in historical fiction and he carries it out very well.
Very pleasurable reading and highly recommended.

A good story that held my interest. I enjoyed the book and was sorry to see it end.
Cardigan Bay: WW II in Ireland

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-04-15
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
A brilliant historical crime novel of Georgian London from the author of The Devil in the Marshalsea.
Spring, 1728. A young, well-dressed man is dragged through the streets of London to the gallows at Tyburn. The crowds jeer and curse as he passes, calling him a murderer. He tries to remain calm. His name is Tom Hawkins, and he is innocent.
Somehow he has to prove it before the rope squeezes the life out of him.
It is, of course, all his own fault. He was happy with Kitty Sparks. Life was good. He should never have told the most dangerous criminal in London that he was 'bored and looking for adventure'. He should never have offered to help Henrietta Howard, the king's mistress, in her desperate struggles with a brutal husband. And most of all, he should never have trusted the witty, calculating Queen Caroline. She has promised him a royal pardon if he holds his tongue, but then again there is nothing more silent than a hanged man.
Based loosely on actual events, Antonia Hodgson's new novel is both a sequel to The Devil in the Marshalsea and a standalone historical mystery. From the gilded cage of the Court to the wicked freedoms of the slums, it reveals a world both seductive and deadly. And it continues the rake's progress of Tom Hawkins - assuming he can find a way to survive the noose....

    Exceptional
    Any additional comments?
This audiobook really is in a class of its own. Narrated superbly by Klloska, this story flits between present and past with a thrilling storyline, that sees Tom Hawkins' explain how he got to be sat in a carriage destined for the hangman's noose.
Each time it came to me turning my iPad off I found myself really not wanting to! I could have listened to this book forever, it had everything; great characters, superb narration, fantastic storyline .. The lot. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone, of all ages.
This audiobook will captivate you and leave you desperate for more. Highly recommended.
    Atmospheric and gripping
What did you like most about The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins?
Great characters, satisfyingly complex plot with some unexpected twists. Just great storytelling.
What other book might you compare The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins to, and why?
The Devil in Marshalsea as it's a follow up.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No, too long.
    Any additional comments?
Firmly set in 1720s London, very strong on location and historical detail. Loved the physical sense created by the author; the characters have a real feel and the smells and sights are almost tangible.
    Good story and
Good story line and likeable characters I read the authors comments that she used the speech patterns she thought/believed would have been used at the time..... so given fair warning.....(some bad language) but apart from that enjoyed the book.
    Thomas Hawkins
This book like others I have read about Thomas Hawkins.was a jolly good yarn and most enjoyable to listen to.I would give this a five star rating.
Sequel even better than the first!
I enjoyed 'The Devil in the Marshalsea', but this sequel is even better. The narration is excellent - with just enough characterisation to carry things along without being intrusive. The plotting is focussed and the story keeps you guessing. I thoroughly recommend it.
