A predictable, sugar-coated, feel-good experience.

It's difficult to find good fiction stories on the American civil war era. When I came across this book, I thought I had finally found what I was looking for: A variety of short stories about all sorts people who's lives are influenced by the war.

Unfortunately, I was wrong.

The stories were, piece by piece, incredibly mediocre and predictable with no exciting twists or surprises. They might be more suited for a younger audience to, perhaps, spark their interest in this part of history in an easy accessible way, but that is all it's good for.

A good example of this was the story about a drummer boy; told from the point of view of his dog. ("My life's purpose has just taken on a whole new meaning! I wasn't just here to protect my master, I now had a whole company of men! They WANTED me. They NEEDED me. They ACCEPTED me. I belong with my master and was happy to be here as their mascot!")

... yawn. I bet the 10-year old me would have enjoyed this.

If you are looking for a more fact-based, intriguing, thought-provoking piece of fiction and want to catch a glimpse of what life might have been like during that era for people of all sorts of different backgrounds...

Good Reading

This was a book that I began reading at a relative's home in New Zealand. I ordered it as soon as we returned home to finish reading it and thorughly enjoyed it.

The Blue Note

As always I enjoyed the characters created by Charlotte Bingham and learned a little bit more about the war time experiences of the children of that era. It was a wonderful read and very hard to put down once I started it. I would recommend this book to a friend and have passed it on to my sister.

WONDERFUL...FULL OF ANTICIPATION

This is a novel so heartbreaking........so touching it kept me glued to the pages just anticipating the outcome for these wonderful characters.

The novel is centred around three orphans: Teddy, Roberta, and Miranda, and as it is wartime in England, they are sent to Somerset to the adoptive care of two spinster sisters; Aunt Sophie and Aunt Prudence, living at a rectory. Although there is a war going on, their life with the sisters is idyllic and they are made to feel wanted and loved....more secure than they have ever imagined.

However, all good things soon come to an end, as the Committee for Evacuation moves in and Roberta is sent to another home.....seperating her from all the people she holds dear to her heart.

Life goes on and after the war the three meet under rare circumstances. Miranda is now a model and Teddy a Photographer. Roberta is working in Advertising. They have all changed tremendously, but the ties that bound them as youngsters, are ever present and the friendship continue from where they left off. See the stories they exchange with each other and where life takes them from this point.

A wonderful gift for an avid reader. I gave it five stars.

Wished it was better

"The Blue Note" is the second book by Charlotte Bingham that I have read and I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. In this book, I found the pace to be a little slow and a little unbelievible. Miranda, Teddy, and Bobbie are three children that are evauated to the English countryside during the war after a while they are seperated from each others and it is years before they each other again.

A Neat Collection of Interviews of Survivors

CITIZEN SURVIVOR TALES was a neat collection of interviews. They were interesting and a few even strange or bizarre. I liked 'The Housewife', 'The Entrepreneur', and 'The Viscount' to name a few. These are fiction but they sound somewhat non-fiction. Either way, reading the blurb is slightly chilling if this actually happened and Maryanne Coleman really did go missing.

ELIZABETH KLETT does an outstanding performance reading these accounts. I've listened to other work by her and love her voice. She's an amazing voice actor.

Wonderful glimpse into the citizens survivor set

Great little interviews but it seems to be more of a companion novel as I have not read the authors other books and was u familiar with some of the events, ppl and places being discussed. Overall very much enjoyed both the story and the narration and will be looking into the other books by the author to expand my familiarity of this set. I enjoy these types of book, but this one fell a little short. The narration seemed to fit the book, but I think if the writing had more substance the whole book would have been better.

Interesting!

I dont usually read many books from this genre, but I really enjoyed this one. The narration brought the story to life and held my interest throughout. The story was well thought out, complete and will keep you listening.

Excellent young adult novel highly recommended

I enjoyed this book very much, for a number of reasons. Anya and I are approximately the same age born around the same time., So it was very interesting to me to hear a story from the point of view of a Russian girl Who I could relate to the time with. I have always been fascinated with the Soviet union probably primarily because of me growing up during the height of the Cold War. This book was very easy to understand it had a beautiful flow and the narration was excellent. I was very satisfied I received this review copy from the author publisher or narrator

Very realistic

A good YA novel. Anya is an interesting character, and the parts about her life in the Murmansk area, with her submariner husband, felt very realistic and especially interesting. Great narration, too!

An Interesting Irony Between Friends

TORMENT MOON was a good solid short about two friends, Thomas who was drunk who thought the moon was there just to torture him. Jim was his friend with reason who set him straight. There was good back and forth with these two. The story was visual as well.

JASON MITCHELL did a nice job narrating the story. He has good vocal skills and I'd be interested in hearing more from both author and reader.

Good story, but I wanted more

This was a short story about a man that had been dumped by his girlfriend and felt as if the moon was mocking him, while he had been out drinking with his buddy one night. It was a good story that could have led up to something better, but it kind of stopped suddenly with no closure in my opinion. Author was on the right track with this one. Narration was good too.

Not bad, all things considered

I listened to the audiobook version of this book. I liked the narration, the voice was very fitting with the characters. Just as good was the tale itself. I wouldn't really call it a tale though, since it was more like one episode of something much bigger. The audiobook was around 12 minutes long. It really was too bad that it ended so soon: I was expecting more, the last line didn't seem to fit. It was as though Thomas was experiencing a nervous breakdown and Jim was only beginning to see the value of their friendship. I wanted to know if the sobre Thomas would go through with the drunk Thomas' decisions. Or whether the sobre Thomas was any different to the drunk Thomas.

Believe me, from what I heard, this was a terrific piece. I just see ample opportunity for the writer to extend the tale. Of course I do prefer quality over quantity, and it was for this reason that I gave this book a four star rating. I find that there are some books which drag far too much, and the dialogue just seems to go round and round, not really getting anywhere. So, I would much rather listen to something with a clear direction, as I'm sure many other readers appreciate. There was a more than adequate level of description involved, perhaps not so much of the characters, but definitely of the setting. I've read books which leave this out, and tend to be wholly dialogue. So, again, in that context, this book is not bad at all. Just be mindful, after all it's 12 minutes long.

Narration

I liked the story but not how it was narrated. I've always found Maisie to be a proper lady with a strong character but this narrator, in my opinion, put her across as an intelligent and boring goody two shoes - too prissy.

Good reading

Excellent description of the life of WW2 Navy submariners with unexpected details about submarines interspersed. Hard to determine if itâs fiction or not.

Good But Flawed Sub Thriller

I wish I could give this very good book five stars, but there were enough flaws that I felt it deserved less than that. My biggest complaint was that about the first third of the book was overly concerned with all the hardware on the sub, much of it poorly explained as to purpose. It also bogs down in endless and often useless abbreviations and somewhat pedantic writing. I get the impression that the author is very proud of his knowledge of subs and wants to impress readers who might have served on WWII subs. Okay, with that out of the way, after the encyclopedic pages, the book suddenly takes off and becomes exciting. The author covers a lot of ground and the sub sees a lot of action. The book enters can't-put-it-down territory and by the end, you know that you haven't wasted your time and have read a very enjoyable war thriller. So, though somewhat flawed, Bacalao is a book I would recommend to others.

I've read many WWII sub books, this holds your interest but keeps you wanting for more. It is a good pass the time book but not a "can't set it down" book

WW II Submariner Verisimilitude

J.T. McDaniel's Bacalao is not a heart-pounding submarine action story or a fast moving pot boiler; instead, there is a definite "feel" of authenticity in its story-line. McDaniel respects his characters: they are decent men all, and Navy to the core. (I was surprised that McDaniel himself has never been in the Navy but is a Vietnam veteran aviator. Interestingly, he has his characters rant about the inability of American pilots to tell, or care about, the difference between enemy and friendly subs...). The novel is a deliberately paced old fashion story beginning with the fictional laying of the Bacalao's keel at the Electric Boat Company yard in Groton, Connecticut. After trial runs, a passage through the Panama Canal to Hawaii, the Bacalao enters the Pacific War with the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor. Her war action takes place over twelve patrols. Occasionally, McDaniel is pedantic (especially about sub technical details); and a few of his action scenarios seem familiar.
