  • (448) Canada's First Green Waves
First up this week, Ryan O'Connor author of "First Green Wave: Pollution Probe and the Origins of Environmental Activism in Ontario". Before there was Greenpeace, Environmental Defence, Ecojustice, Sierra Club or any other of the hundreds of large and small environmental organizations in Canada today there was Pollution Probe. Started by a few students and faculty at the University of Toronto back in 1969, Pollution Probe but environmental protection and activism on the map with a series of small and big wins protecting Canadians from burning rivers, toxic smokestacks and rampant litter. Ryan walks us through an outline of his book on the history of Pollution Probe and comments on the contrast between 1970's environmentalism in Canada and today.
Jo Royle, Officer for the Pew Charitable Trusts with the Global Ocean Legacy program about the very recent announcement by the UK government to approve the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve which is now the worlds largest fully protected marine space. We talk to Jo about the importance of protecting ocean space, the implicit difficultly of getting people and governments to care about something they almost never see or think about and the value of a clean ocean in general.

  • (447) #LoveLetters for CIUT - The Sound of YOUR City!
First up a surprise visit (even to me!) from the original show founder, Jordan Poppenk who came into the studio today to support us. We get a few, very well said words from Jordan about the changing times between when he started the show back in September 2006 and "climate" of environmentalism today.
Second guest was Antony Upward, graduate of York University with a Masters of Environmental Studies in Business Model Design and Sustainability, an OCAD University Industry Partner at the Strategic Innovation Lab, a co-founder of the Lab’s Strongly Sustainable Business Model Group and the convening entrepreneur for the Flourishing Business Toolkit project. Antony joins us today to talk about the Flourishing Business Canvas, and why it matters.
Last but not least Andrew Gage, Climate Change and Environmental Legal Aid director for West Coast Environmental Law Association joins us to comment on an blog he wrote about the extreme nature of the RCMP documents that Greenpeace Canada got through and access to information request that appears to reveal deep ideological biases and conflict of interest within the RCMP with regards to anyone who opposes oil project expansion/pipelines etc as an extremist who must be kept under control.

  • (445) Les Militants
We begin the show with a discussion of the recent TTC (metro) shutdown in Toronto due to the rivers of pollution running underneath the city, highlighting the pollution itself but also the attitude towards the value of public services like education and transit in Canada.
Despite out best efforts, we didn't end up being able to be at the Green Living Show this year. However, we did end up having David Gray-Donald a student and "les militants" from Quebec who helped us understand some of the differences and disconnections between activism between French and English Canada. We spoke about the ongoing austerity protests, climate, pipelines and more.
Stefan leads us in our final segment, with some thoughts on the ongoing student/TA strikes in Toronto and does an excellent job leading us in a short roundtable on the place for communal resources and the value of an education (and other public goods) to tie the show up in a neat little package!

  • (443) Monsoon Season
The Toronto Water Doc Festival is coming up soon, so this week we talked to Melanie Howe the Water Docs Programmer right off the bat about some of the films and other screenings happening over the next couple weeks.
The festival opens with a (free) screening of the powerful 2014 documentary 'Monsoon' by Canadian writer and director Sturla Gunnarsson. After the second break, we speak to Sturla himself about making the documentary and his time in India.
Finally, Stefan attempts to bring us some good news to talk about this week, and Kevin and Daryn do their best to ruin his fun with concerns. :D
And of course a reminder that if you are in Toronto (or not) our friends over at LeadNow have organized a rally regarding bill C-51 as well as a petition and some other information you should read about the implications of the bill.
