Hoboken resident Alexandra Lakhman was crowned Miss New Jersey USA on April 3, 2022. She competed in six Miss New Jersey USA pageants before taking home the crown. We discuss what the competition entails, the process of preparing both mentally and physically for the pageant, and what life is like as Miss NJ USA. 

We also discuss causes close to her heart. Her brother, Joe Lakhman, suffers from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and Lexi has taken up the helm as the communications chair for the New Jersey chapter of Cure SMA. Also, as a first generation Ukrainian-American, the conflict in Eastern Europe is something she is trying to bring awareness to.

The Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees organization, invited us to come out and participate in their first "Podcast Night" on July 24th, 2022. We were lucky enough to record with members of the Patriots organization, including the legendary Sparky Lyle, a 1977 Cy Young Award Winner with the Yankees, and the first manager in Patriots history.

Priscilla Frederick-Loomis competed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for Antigua & Barbuda in the high jump. After the 2016 games she began preparing and training for the 2020 games, which were eventually postponed due to the pandemic. Despite suffering a setback, Priscilla pushed herself to the limits to qualify, but ultimately fell short due to things beyond her control.

However, that is only the beginning of her story. Priscilla invited us down to her home in Wildwood, NJ to give us a tour and give her a chance to tell her story.

Shanghai Jazz has been a staple of the Madison, NJ community since 1995 and in that time was recognized as one of the top-100 jazz clubs in the world! Eventually Tom Donohoe purchased the restaurant from the original owners and has managed to maintain the reputation of the restaurant, but also add his own flair to the menu.

Segment 1
Tom takes us through his background working around the country in high-end kitchens. Eventually he returned to his home state of New Jersey, working at various restaurants and as a consultant before purchasing Shanghai Jazz from the original owners, David & Martha in 2017. He also took us through the history of the restaurant.

Today in New Jersey History
Dick Button was born in Englewood, New Jersey on July 18, 1929. He was a figure skater who is credited with being the first skater to successfully land the double axel jump in competition in 1948. He also completed the first triple jump of any kind, a triple loop, in 1952. Button is also credited with inventing the flying camel spin, also called the Button Camel. He was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1976.

Segment 2
We discuss how the menu has evolved since Tom took over the restaurant in 2017. He takes us through the heavy hitters and what people order the most. Mike also offers up some of his favorites on the menu. The two also discuss the downstairs area, Encore Speakeasy, which has evolved to be an exciting and unique experience with incredible cocktails.

Bella Rococo at Emilia's in Garwood, NJ is a beauty salon with deep Italian family roots. The owner, Stefanie Savino, opened the business in 2019 and has not only survived the last few years, but has thrived due to the support of both her immediate family members, as well as her team who she also considers family. 

Segment 1
Stefanie details her background in the beauty industry and eventually opening her own salon. Her Aunt Emilia, an Italian immigrant, has been in the beauty industry since she was 10 years old, moved to America in 1963 and opened the salon which would later become Bella Rococo at Emilia's in 1989. We discuss the support Stefanie has received from her family throughout the process of opening and renovating the business.

Today in New Jersey History
Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr met in the early morning hours of July 11, 1804 at a spot known as the Heights of Weehawken in Weehawken, New Jersey to face each other in a duel. The duel would be the culmination of a long and bitter rivalry between the two men, both high profile politicians. While no one could say with absolute certainty as to what happened that day, Burr severely wounded Hamilton who would die from those injuries the next day.
