January 11, 2021Losing a (birth) Mother to Cancer - MattMaureen Pollard interviews Matt about his experience in finding his birth mother and losing her to breast cancer only 4 and a half years later. They discuss how Matt's grief started at 11 months old when he was adopted; how at 35 he finally met his birth mother, and though he is so glad for the time they were able to spend together, he is also mad that she was taken from him so soon. Matt explains how the complexities between those feelings of sadness/unfairness and blessings have complicated his grieving process. "I found my grief was really wrapped, or hid itself... it was like the core of my rage, I was angry more than anything else." Matt opens up about how 'toxic masculinity' accepts rage as an acceptable thing to dwell in, and how when you're angry you stop being kind and that created so much more work in his healing journey. They also discuss how Matt has learned to express himself through art - music, theatre, etc. - and how that keeps him mentally well, allowing him to have a dialogue with his grief through the language of his art....more20minPlay

They also discuss how important it was to spend time with her baby after he was born still - "It was all the pain and beauty rolled into a ball, one of the most traumatic days of my life, but I'm still holding my baby" - and how grateful Holly is that there were pictures taken of her son that day....more21minPlay

They discuss how one of the biggest challenges for him after the loss was 'being a man' because there's an expectation for men to get over things quickly, but how it was a challenge to keep going, losing friends along the way because many did not know how to listen to him talk about his loss of a child. Rebecca talks about how she stumbled trying to maintain other relationships while grieving: "A big part of what I had to make sure I didn't do, when we were in the midst of this terrible tragedy, was lose the relationships of the people around me because I was too lost in my own grief, or too angry and letting that anger spill out onto the wrong person". They also discuss how going back to work immediately after her father's death was actually helpful for Rebecca; how audio books were also a great distraction for her from her grief; and how she took up comedy as a way of honouring her father, who always told her she should be a comedian....more33minPlay
September 30, 2020Stillbirth - CharlotteAuthor of "The Twentieth Year: A Memoir of Miscarriage", Maureen Pollard interviews Charlotte about her experience of losing her son to stillbirth at 5 months into her pregnancy. This came after she had a previous miscarriage, which made it even harder to bear the disappointment and sorrow - especially as a woman attempting to have a child without a partner. Charlotte talks about how hard it was to return to work only 10 days after her son's death with barely any time to process what had happened. They also discuss how having amazing midwives by her side during and after was so important; how they encouraged her to hold her son in her arms and gave her space to cry and create a sacred connection with him. This allowed her to honour and respect him, and taught her that she needed to grieve in order to be healthy - "up until that event, I had always had some kind of unconscious belief that grieving or sadness was a weakness, or it was kind of.. inappropriate."...more21minPlay
September 17, 2020Losing a Son to Suicide - JillMaureen Pollard interviews Jill about her experience of suicide loss. They discuss how her son was on the Austism spectrum with high-functioning Aspergers, and how it made it difficult for him to connect with and understand people; and difficult to give and receive love. This led to him struggling, becoming angry, holding emotion in and despite the family's many attempts to help him, he eventually ended up following through with his threats to hurt himself. Jill describes how grief is "a whole body experience, it affects your mind, it affects your body physically" and how she would wake up with panic attacks, consumed with guilt over the fact that she couldn't save her son. They also discuss how she pushed through by deciding she needed to do what her son couldn't - work through and move forward - and how she became very vocal about her grief in order to process it, even when that made others feel uncomfortable, because her son was unable to talk about his feelings....more24minPlay
