  • Michele Benyo | A Mother & Daughter Living Forward After Loss

The heartbreak of a parent losing a child is a pain like no other. But what about the sibling(s) left behind of the child who dies?  When her son, David, was four years old, he was diagnosed with cancer. After a 2 1/2-year battle, he died when his younger sister was 3 years old. Michele shares her perspective of guiding her daughter through sibling loss while navigating her own.

Michele of @goodgriefparenting shares how grief is an unavoidable part of life that we will carry forward, and we can still live well and enjoy life. She adds her thoughts about appearing strong for others, which often leaves grievers feeling isolated because, although they may seem strong, that doesn't mean support isn't needed.

Michele's work focuses on offering support for parents of child loss who also have other children navigating sibling loss. She offers three suggestions as well as many other helpful and supportive suggestions for parents who desire to be positive grief role models for their other child(ren) experiencing loss.

"Grief is in two parts. The first is loss. The second is remaking of life." - Anne Roiphe

  • Takeaways & Reflections | When Dysfunction Meets Dysfunction

What happens when you get a group of people together with unprocessed grief?

The same thing that happens, likely every day of your life - in unprocessed grief, dysfunction meets dysfunction; baggage meets baggage.

We are a society of grievers. Every human being has either lost a loved one, dream, relationship, home, job/career, a pet, or themselves. Amidst these losses, are other relationships in life where others have experienced losses, too.

In our dysfunction of not addressing these losses (which are likely numerous and cumulatively negative), we are met with the undelivered communications and undealt with emotions that cause a dysfunction stew.

    Dysfunction meets dysfunction.

What do you do when you find yourself in situational dysfunction?

    What can you do?

In today's episode, I explore this and more...

  • Moussa Mikhail | Mission for Self-Mastery

Do you want to know where to start if you're tired of settling for the conditions and circumstances of your life?

Ask yourself the question Moussa asked himself and start there.

    What was the question?

"What are you trying to forget?"

When we get tired of our past circumstances creating chaos and dictating how far we go to reach our dreams, it takes introspection and committing to self-mastery to create change in our lives.

Self-mastery embodies Moussa's mission today, but before he got to this point, he endured some challenges and hardships, as many people do. But, not everyone will do something about it. A growth mindset can be ignited through loss and grief, but it doesn't have to take these things to experience growth. We can also learn from our environment and from signs and signals our body gives us.

Moussa and I discuss the challenges that have shaped him and how evolving with his grief and not fighting it has led to healing and awareness through tools and techniques he shares in this episode.

You will find resonance in Moussa's message if you are a veteran or service member. However, we all go through hard times, even when not in the military. Let Moussa's message inspire you to stop settling and take small steps to self-mastery.

  • Takeaways & Reflections | Taking a Break From the Grind of Grief

Breaking points - we all have them. But, there are ways you can ride the waves of it without getting pulled down by it.

Resiliency has its limits. And, when you've spent years, or even decades, mastering the myths of grief (Don't Feel Bad, Replace the Loss, Grieve Alone, Be Strong, Keep Busy, and Time Heals), resiliency will only get you so far before you reach a breaking point.

By creating rituals and routines, you create a system to help make better choices in your grief. Maybe it's going to the grocery store that doesn't serve alcohol. Or, paying at the pump rather than going inside and buying an obscene amount of lotto tickets or cigarettes. Whatever your vice is, there are systems (rituals and routines) you can devise that support your desire to take a break from the grind of grief. Because, when you resort to those vices or behaviors that make you feel better for a short period of time, you're left with feeling shame and guilt for having those vices at all. These feelings only add on more grief.

Focusing on feeling better without the use of substances or people and thinking outside the box by making small choices over time is how you create momentum. And with that momentum, you'll find a system that works, and over time, you'll find yourself naturally choosing differently for yourself and your well-being.

Emulating these behaviors for children who are grieving will leave a lasting impression and make a positive impact, too. We often hear children are resilient. In reality, children don't have a choice. Resiliency becomes a coping mechanism. And, because children grow up to be adults, too, it's easy to see how adult grievers are emulating exactly what they learned as children. And this cycle continues, generation after generation.

We have a choice to create rituals that serve us and those that don't. Both will give you a break from the grind of grief. But, which one would you rather fall back on? The one that only makes you feel worse or the one that truly helps you push pause, recalibrate, realign, and set you up to make better choices moving forward?

What does an ideal break from the grind of grief look like for you?

  • Kimberley Pittman-Schulz | Finding Peace Amidst the Ashes

When Kimberley was a child, a house fire would change her life as she knew it forever. Both her older and younger sisters both perished in the fire. However, Kimberley wouldn't learn the truth of how that life-altering moment came to be until her 30's.

Growing up, Kimberley's father also worked a job that kept the family on the road. As a result, Kimberley found it challenging (and heartbreaking) to forge deep connections with others because they were constantly on the go.

Kimberley found her voice through writing after experiencing a two-year "loss limbo" after the death of her dear neighbor and her mother's death years ago. She's since written a field guide for living with loss without losing yourself.  Additionally, on top of Covid-19, she remains at her husband's side as his health declines as well.

Remnants of the sadness continue to ebb and flow throughout her life. However, Kimberley has learned tools that have enabled her to find peace amidst the ashes of her grief.

  • Takeaways & Reflections | Follow Your Curiosity, Even When Grieving

Curiosity is sorely underestimated. It's not given headlines or attention, but, in my eyes, it's responsible for most inventions. Curiosity has led to some of the world's most significant innovations.

If there weren't people who allowed themselves to be led by their curiosity, we never would've evolved from stick rubbing to flint. Someone, along the way, asked themselves better questions or was open to learning something new.

Grief makes curiosity seem like a luxury. But, what if we took the one thing that helps our society evolve and apply it to our lives at a heart and soul level?

What if you received the idea one day to go to "Google" and search for "grief support" and you do, and you find the one thing that helped you and changed your life?

What if you kept hearing people talk about Reiki and you kept seeing it popping up online or in random places, and you let your curiosity lead you to contact a Reiki Master to explain the whole "Reiki thing" to you. And you take it ten steps further and end up becoming a Reiki Master yourself after never even experiencing a Reiki session yourself? Then, to your surprise, you find that it's the one thing that helps you maintain balance and protect your energy in support of the grief work you're doing.

Yes, intuition plays a role, too; going within and being open to the whispers. But, curiosity is where so many great things begin.

When it comes to grief, maintaining your curiosity could be the very thing that leads you to a life-changing program (as it did for me). Don't shortchange yourself or let fear get in the way.

What message do you want hindsight to say to you in the future?

  • Kristin Sherry | Career Grief and The Gift of Hindsight

Kristin Sherry is a bestselling and award-winning author, creator of YouMap®, a 2020 Career Innovator Award recipient, and she's also my mentor. Her brilliance is why I am a Certified YouMap® Coach.

If you have been struggling with your life path, career, purpose, or what I like to call - a midlife unraveling, this episode is for you!

Grief is the loss of hopes, dreams, and expectations. When it comes to what we spend most of our waking hours doing if we don't love it, don't utilize all of our skills, or aren't valued, grief is often the result.

It's also for you if you've experienced grief of any kind, too. Why? Because, also in this episode, Kristin and I talk about why I include this program with my one-on-one grief recovery clients and why as grievers, we can sometimes feel isolated within our love relationships.

Kristin shares how her own losses and career grief have shaped her work today and why perception matters. We also get into how the way we grieve, when misunderstood, can cause further conflict and grief in our lives.

There will be golden nuggets (and a new favorite analogy of mine) in this episode you've likely never heard before (even if you've listened to every previous episode). I hope this episode inspires you. And, if you want more inspiration after you listen, be sure to follow Kristin on Instagram!

"The more you know yourself, the less you look to others to tell you who you are."

  • Takeaways & Reflections | The Energy of Grief

We have more agency over our physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies than we would like to admit.

Admitting that we have power and control over ourselves is admitting that it’s also our job to do something about the issues that plague our physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies.

The energy of grief can be like cancer and invade every fiber of your being. It can destroy your relationships, finances, will, and break your spirit. But, what it can’t do is choose for you. You always have a choice.

In this episode, I talk about the energy of grief and I ask you to challenge the long-held beliefs that may be the very thing that could be keeping you emotionally stuck.

Life is so much harder when you go it alone. But, you don’t have to and this episode also shares an idea to explore if a deeper connection, not only to others but also yourself, is what you long to feel.

  • David Richman | Wake Up Call

What does it take to bicycle 4700 miles, with temps most often over 100 degrees and the wind against you?

David Richman did just that as part of a passion project that later became his book, Cycle of Lives, where all proceeds benefit cancer-focused charities.

However, David didn’t wake up one day and decide to make Cycle of Lives his mission. Instead, it was years in the making, following the death of his dear sister, June, due to brain cancer.

David’s sister’s diagnosis was the icing on the cake of what he was already struggling with in his life. One question he asked himself would set him on a path of personal transformation.

Listen to David’s story of transformation and what has inspired him throughout his life. Hear some of the stories that have most inspired him and some golden nuggets he’s picked up along the way.

Be sure to listen to this one all the way through! This episode is the perfect inspiration for the start of 2022!

  • Corchele Smith | A Mother's Empty Arms

Empty Arms Syndrome is a phenomenon most often associated with stillbirth. However, as Corchele's story illustrates, feeling an ache to hold your baby is a very real feeling even if you deliver a breathing child.

Ten hours after delivering Breklyn by emergency cesarian, Corchele and her husband were faced with a loss no parent should ever experience. And, the fact that it was completely preventable only added to their heartache.

Corchele, and her former husband, turned their heartache into purpose after a chance gift helped transform Corchele's empty arms of suffering into arms of action and purpose.

Whether you have experienced infant/child loss yourself or not, I hope you listen to Corchele's transformational story of heartache to meaning and how her family continued to honor Breklyn in their lives.

I don't believe we ever fully understand the impact our presence has in others' lives, but as Breklyn's life shows, even a brief presence in the physical plane can create ripples.
