Jesus meets Saul on road to Damascus on his way to destroy the church. It didn't matter who Saul was or what he did; it mattered who he would become. God meets us where we are, but doesn't leave us there, and he often takes us on a path we don't anticipate with fewer details than we want.

The Gospel, the good news that Jesus brings is not for us to get to heaven, but for us to get to God. The story of Simon the Sorcerer in Acts 8 is a picture of us - eager to discover how the gospel might benefit us and our circumstances. We are more like Simon than we realize, but the good news is that it is God's grace that brings us to himself. We have nothing to boast about.

The church is exploding in size. As the family of God grows, it causes some to feel overlooked. The apostles must create structure and members of the body must step forward to take care of those in need. The structure they create further enables the Word of God to increase and more people to be included in the God's Kingdom.

The story of Ananias and Sapphira is in stark contrast to the other apostles and early believers. As Jesus says in Matthew 16, those that find their lives are the ones that are willing to fully give it up. Just as Ananias and Sapphira hold back a reserve for themselves, the religious leaders can't let go of their authority and reputation.

The early church highlights the ability of God to change people and bring them together. When the apostles and first Christians focus on God, unity and community is the result, but that isn't the end goal. God empowers us not just to be kind and share with each other, but to spread the Good News of Jesus as the Savior and King.

Peter and John boldly proclaim the work of Christ to the religious leaders. Despite their weakness (being average, unschooled fishermen), God still moves his kingdom forward, showing how his plan cannot be thwarted by weakness, threats, or rulers that have a different idea of what is good. Even when our human strength fails, God's is never shaken.

As Peter and John enter the temple, they are asked by a beggar for money. What they give him instead demonstrates that healing happens today, forgiveness is available today, and a full restoration is coming.
