Past winners include legends like Tamika Catchings, Diana Taurasi, Candace Parker, and Breanna Stewart. Rather than predicting a single winner, I’ll share my top five contenders for this award. First on my list is Kamilla Cardoso, whose impressive physical advantage and natural athleticism have made her a standout for the Chicago Sky. Despite an early-season shoulder injury, Cardoso has become a key player, averaging 9.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. Her coach, Dawn Staley, believes she has MVP potential. Next, we have Kate Martin of the Las Vegas Aces. Known initially as Caitlin Clark’s former teammate, Martin has carved out her own niche, particularly for her defensive tenacity. Although her offensive numbers might not be staggering, her impact on the team’s success is undeniable. Rickea Jackson from the Los Angeles Sparks is another top contender.
Now, for the top two contenders: Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark. Notably, the event had no female fighters or broadcasters, drawing criticism due to Saudi Arabia’s poor record on women’s equality. However, Turki Al-Shaikh, Saudi Minister and Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, expressed a desire to include women in future UFC events, aligning with the Kingdom's efforts to improve its global image regarding women's rights. This change could inspire local women, boost economic benefits, and attract more sponsors, showcasing a commitment to progressive change. In this segment of the GSMC Hoops & Heels Women’s Sports Podcast, we’ll be recapping recent NWSL games, starting with the matches from Sunday, June 16th, and covering key highlights through to June 22nd. The Seattle Reign FC and Portland Thorns battled to a 0-0 draw. Despite making five changes to their starting eleven, the Reign settled into the match well. Thorns forward Janine Beckie set an early aggressive tone with a yellow card just three minutes in. The Utah Royals secured their second win of the season with a late goal from Kate Del Fava, defeating Bay FC 1-0. On Wednesday, June 19, Gotham FC edged out the San Diego Wave 2-1. Rose Lavelle scored for Gotham in extra time of the first half, while San Diego’s Mya Jones equalized early in the second half. Also that day Angel City FC triumphed over Racing Louisville with a 3-2 victory. Goals by Kennedy Fuller, Rocky Rodriguez, and Sydney Leroux highlighted the match.
On Friday, June 21, Orlando Pride dominated the Utah Royals with a historic 6-0 win, setting club records for most goals in a single game and largest margin of victory. Barbra Banda and Marta each scored twice, with Summer Yates and Ally Watt adding to the tally. Goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse secured the team's sixth clean sheet of the year. On Saturday, June 22, the Houston Dash and San Diego Wave ended in a 0-0 draw, and the Bay FC beat Angel City FC 1-0, with Tess Boade scoring the only goal. Despite Angel City controlling much of the match and having several chances, Bay FC held on for the win, completing a season sweep of Los Angeles. Dive into the GSMC Hoops & Heels Women’s Sports Podcast where we discuss the Team USA swimmers in the Olympics. We start with one of the most renowned athletes: Katie Ledecky. Competing in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle, 1500 freestyle, and 4x200 freestyle relay, Ledecky is a three-time Olympian. Next, we have Phoebe Bacon, competing in her first Olympics in the 200 backstroke. Bacon, from the University of Wisconsin, will face tough competition from Regan Smith and Kaylee McKeown but is a strong contender for a medal. Regan Smith, competing in the 200 backstroke, 100 backstroke, and 200 butterfly, is another top athlete to watch. A silver and bronze medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Smith recently broke the 100 backstroke record at the Olympic Trials. Her main competitors will be McKeown and Berkoff. Kate Douglass, competing in the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 IM, and 4x100 freestyle relay, has won numerous titles at the NCAA Championships and international events. Alex Walsh, competing only in the 200 IM, is a strong contender for a medal. She finished second to Douglass in the Trials and has a good chance of making the podium.

Leading in kills (47-44) and dominating in blocks (14-5), the U.S. team, with standout performances from Sophie Fischer and Jess Mruzik, showcased their resilience.
