GUEST MIX SERIES

Since its launch in 2016, FWR has been dealing records online and at record fairs around the country. It wasn’t until 2018 that head honcho, Flat White Chris decided to start releasing records under the Flat White name, and launched as a label.

Already with eight releases to its name, the label has showcased talents such as Jacques Renault, Last Nubian, Garrett David, Byron The Aquarius, Felipe Gordon, (to name a few) as well as Flat White Chris himself.

The label prides itself on championing up and coming artists from around the globe, as well as those from the UK and specifically, Leicester City.

So far, releases have been played by Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 6Music, had features with the likes of Dj Mag and Mixmag, as well as being stocked by record stores all over the world.

Back in October 2018, Chris launched his very own label night in Leicester, Flat White Fridays. This has been a resounding success with Chris’s 6+hour vinyl sets establishing a real following in less than a year. Monthly bookings (past and future) include Felipe Gordon, Kassian, Cleanfield, City Fly Records, Danny Langan and of course, SlothBoogie.

The mix includes a mix of new, old and forthcoming tracks, a couple of which will be out on FWR in the very near future. I like to think this is the sort of noise you can expect if you were to come to one of the Flat White label nights in Leicester.

The London-born, Berlin-based artist masterfully straddles a heady mix of house, techno, and disco that has seen him become a regular at legendary spots like Panorama Bar/Berghain and Concrete while his output sits in the boxes of DJs like Ryan Elliott, The Black Madonna, DVS1 and Gerd Janson.

With a record store background, it’s unsurprising that Parker’s instinct to dig is paired with an unapologetically high standard when it comes to track selection. As a result, he’s a DJ who draws on undiscovered classics as much as he does unreleased material during a typical set.

Anna Collecta is a Brooklyn-based DJ passionate about disco and house music. A resident DJ of Rollerwave NYC, who puts on some of the largest roller disco events on the east coast. Co-founder of Hot Honey Sundays, one of Brooklyn’s most popular free dance parties, she’s a turntablist at heart... having started out as a Hip-Hop DJ. You can find her at select venues throughout NYC playing all vinyl sets, digging deep into her collection, with a style known to get any dance floor going with high energy, soulful selections!

"NYC’s end of summer and early fall events have been super high energy especially just coming out of Halloween. For a contrast, I put together a house + disco mix that felt like the right segway into the season change. I included a lot of soulful, heartfelt tracks I don’t always get to play in the clubs. There’s something about the changing weather that even in NY, makes people slow down a bit and take their time; or at least to reset before N.Y.E.!.... Enjoy! "

This week we have Sisyphos resident, David silver, stepping up to the platters that matter to deliver an hour of vibrant house music, with that signature Wintergarten swing.

David's style ranges from jazz to techno, with funk and disco being combined with classic sounding house. His style leans on Detroit's tradition of combining various musical forms with raw electronic drum machines. The combination of classic sounding house, raw funk and uplifting disco proved to be a deadly cocktail for the Wintergarten at Sisyphos, where he regularly gets people dancing on the bar. Furthermore, his uptempo and energetic sound embraces the timeless sounds of Roland drum machines and the funky grit of MPC-sampled jazz & disco.

"This mix was recorded with a very basic set up, a small Allen & Heat 23 mixer, 2 old CDJ350s and the inevitable Technics. There was no post-production and no loops or EFX were used, so you can expect the true essence of my selection :) "

Man Power delivers an absolute stomper of a mix. Here's a few words from the man himself:

"I spent the whole of the lockdowns alone which, while being pretty grim at times, also gave me the chance to reconnect with music beyond it being my job.

I’d lost sight of why I started doing things in the first place so this time away let me rediscover the joy I have in a much broader palette of music than what I’d become known for.

I ended up starting a music page on FB which connected me to loads of amazing people with similarly broad tastes and that music group ended up turning into a weekly party in Newcastle which has really made me fall in love with sharing music to dance floors again.

I’ve learned a bunch of lessons though, and one of them is to never do anything just for the PR any more, as it’s transparent if you’re not completely invested: That means that I now find myself either turning down podcast opportunities, or coming back with ridiculously long and indulgent mixes."

Erstwhile LA native Alison Swing has been residing in our home from home, Berlin, for the last 4 years now. With an eclectic carefree approach to her sets, she's at home here in the SB guest mix series... sit back and enjoy.
