Over the weekend, Defund the Police protests took place in various cities across the country. In Montreal, protesters toppled a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald. The legacy of Canada’s first Prime Minister includes the founding of the nation we know today as well as his part in the famine faced by Canada’s indigenous populations, and the creation of the infamous residential schools. So once again, we must ask ourselves what to do with statues that depict historical figures who lived starkly checkered lives.

This day marks the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington. This week brought continued protests in Kenora, WI, as well as protests and walkouts from multiple sports leagues, following the police shooting of Jacob Blake.
