This Podcast is recorded in English – the accompanying text is available in German and a short summary is available in English.
Jackie Pool is an Occupational Therapist from the United Kingdom with more than 30 years of experience in supporting people and families who are living with dementia. As part of her work she developed the Pool Activity Level (PAL) Instrument for Occupational Profiling, which is a reliable and valid tool for people with dementia. It is used around the world in hospitals, care homes, domestic care, day care services and other care settings. The PAL-Instrument can be used for people with any cognitive impairments (Pool, 2012).
In this interview, Jackie Pool speaks about how she came to deal with the handling of dementia and she focuses on the main elements of occupational therapy with people with dementia in her work and in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, she talks about the development of the PAL-Instrument and its strength and advantages. She briefly reports about the use of the PAL-Instrument in domestic care. Finally, she gives an overview about her current work and gives an outlook on her future plans.

Perhaps it was already foreseeable in the last issue of our podcast-series: I’m—in (but not only) terms of Occupational Therapy—very fond of Slovenia this year. Besides the interview with Tanja Križaj in Ljubljana in April and the article about the Study Circle OT, which was installed in addition to the already present OT-association in Slovenia, I had a good reason to get back to Slovenia in August—not just for visiting a seminar about Occupational Therapy but also to get into a lengthy talk with two very interesting Occupational Therapists…
Karen Jacobs and Nancy MacRae are Occupational Therapists, professors, colleagues and friends, look back on quite some years in work experience and have—on occasion of the two-day seminar „Building a Mosaic of Health and Well-Being“—been guests in Slovenia, where I met them for an extensive talk which proved to be a good opportunity for all listeners to (once again) broaden the horizon of the own perspective and learn something about Occupational Therapy in other countries, this time the United States of America.
After a relaxed start, which covers the personal developments and careers of Karen and Nancy (and the inspirational sparks that led them to Occupational Therapy initially), we’re covering a broad range of OT-related topics during the progress of the conversation, including, but not limited to, the following ones: admission requirements for studying OT, association-structure in the USA, OT and OT-assistants, career as an OT in the USA, OT’s in the school system, interprofessional education and training, clinical doctorate vs. PhD, individual working foci of Karen and Nancy, sexuality in the elderly, OT’s as agents of change, the american health-care-system from the OT-viewpoint, Nipplegate, ergonomics from the OT-perspective, computer-use in kids and teenagers, the quality of online training courses, telemedicine and telehealth, OT-licenses in different states, CPD, the People-to-People-Ambassador-Programme, Dwight D. Eisenhower, the role of Social Media in OT, the Global Day of Service of Occupational Therapy, children’s books, smartphones, Facebook, electronic devices in educational lectures, the inception of the WORK-journal and Open access.
One thing is certain: Occupational Therapy in the USA is standing on firmer feet that Occupational Therapy in Austria—from the basic education to the possibilities of an academic career. This podcast tries to provide an overview of the OT-landscape in the USA and to delve into details worth knowing. Additionally the fields of work of Karen and Nancy are discussed broadly—you can expect to hear an interesting interview. Have fun and thanks for listening!

As an Occupational Therapist it usually is always rewarding to broaden the own horizon: not only to reflect and enhance the own professional identity, but also to put the own framework in context to that, which colleagues in other countries are operating in – with this podcast, which was recorded in April 2013 at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ljubljana with Tanja Križaj, we’re looking deeply into the Occupational Therapy “landscape” in Slovenia from the beginnings of the profession in the 1960s as far as the current current situation after the successful completion of the Bologna Process.
At the time of the recording Tanja Križaj is working as an assistant lecturer at the Occupational Therapy department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ljubljana. She is holding both a Bachelor and a Masters degree in Occupational Therapy – the latter acquired at the University of Plymouth/UK – and is currently halfway through her PhD-Studies, also in Plymouth. Additionally she’s a founding member of the Study Circle OT, a slovenian initiative to promote Occupational Therapy in the public perception, i.e. through organizing the seminar Building a Mosaic of Health and Well-Being with Occupational Therapy in August 2013 in Bled and various other activities.
Beginning with the personal development of Tanja Križaj and accentuated with springlike bird’s twittering the arc of the conversation spans the following topics: distance learning in Plymouth, introduction and roots of Occupational Therapy in Slovenia, development of Occupational Therapy as a profession over the course of time, current and future challenges in professional development and society, education of students over the course of time, implementation of the Bologna Process, duration of the education, graduation and consecutive apprenticeship and additional exams, amount of theoretical and practical training during the education, education opportunities and number of students, drop-out-rates, future challenges of education in Occupational Therapy, Study Circle OT, aims and goals of the Study Circle OT, Occupational Therapy-seminar in Bled.
Apart from the fact that Tanja speaks a wonderful English with perfect pronunciation and a broad range of vocabulary, she’s also a very vivid conversationist – a very diverting conversation with lots of interesting details and deep insights about the professional culture of one of Austria’s neighboring countries awaits the listeners – highly recommendable!
