It was challenging for Cynthia to come up with the title of her book.  It was through realizing that parents were looking to be an ally to their children rather than an advisory.  

Before you can make a change you have to figure out if you see them as a source of the problem or can you find a solution together and be an ally.  

Cynthia has been helping parents for 27 years and has been a speaker for over 600 events, mostly at schools.  Communication is important and does a parent know how to connect?

We talk about social media and parents trying to get their teenagers to stop being on their phones, yet the parents are not simulating that.  "Everyone has to turn it in".

We share about how we transfer our own frustration about ourselves onto our children and Cynthia speaks to the age of development of children and how we expect them to be adults, yet in reality, they aren't and we need to build compassion.  Parents have to look at what they think and do and how it impacts their children.

Cynthia is an educator and helps the parents.  And only speaks to parents.  And they are the ones that need the change.  Our tendency as parents is to think the children need to change.  However, the parents need to change.  "What do I need to do different?"  And "IF" is a threat.  It's powerful when your language changes.

This in itself is a powerful episode for parents.  A must listen to!!

During COVID, the definition of "hero" has changed.  Those people who put their bodies at risk to serve the rest of us.  What about the rest of us?  The first book is about personal empowerment.  It covers understanding who we are and what makes us do the things we do.

As we get older we "flatten the buttons", and what used to bother us no longer does.    There's a softening that happens.  Christian speaks to forgiveness as well.  It's important to put "that question mark" and remove judgment of others' experiences in life. 

Christian has done personal retreats for years and through the pandemic has created online programs.  He is also offering a year-long program to stretch out the teachings and deliver it in "bite sizes".  It also comes along with accountability.

Brenda Bourns lost her eye.  With this, her story tells about how she not only lost it, also how she dealt with this.

She was walking her dog when it happened.  It was a journey she went through with courage and optimism and such a great force of strength.

While many would make themselves a victim if this occurred, Brenda looked towards the positive.

My story is one of perseverance, strength, and bravery during a surreal pandemic when the world around us was already fragile and uncertain.

On August 1st, 2020 while out walking my dog, I suffered a freak accident that resulted in the loss of my right eye. As a type 2 Diabetic, I went into shock (Diabetesketoacidosis) and found myself fading in and out of consciousness on my neighbour's front lawn.  Survival instinct as well as Mom's instinct kicked in. I knew my daughter would be coming home from a socially distanced bonfire within in the hour. There was no way I was having her find her mother, covered in blood with a dog attached by a leash 30 feet from our home. My dog saved my life by dragging me across my neighbour's lawn, my front lawn, and up the stairs and barking until my husband woke up.

What followed was 23 hours of chaos including 4 trips to 2 different hospitals alone in ambulances, separated from family because of pandemic restrictions. One hospital dealt with the eye removal, the other dealt with the Diabetic shock. My journey takes the audience from the night of the injury to the journey to relearn new simple tasks, depth perception, peripheral vision to custom-made eye patches, and then being fitted for a prosthetic eye. This is a story of perseverance, strength, and a little bit of stubbornness thrown in for good measure.  

Losing my right eye was a gift. The support of a community, combined with feelings of gratefulness for the simplest of things was the greatest lesson. Life is too short.  I am a Live Event Producer by profession but the pandemic has put my career on pause. I have enjoyed sharing my story during my healing.

Linda shares her explanation of being broken to transformation.

Her past was filled with many tragedies, and with that came a feeling of being "crushed".  Her debilitating depression made her feel unsafe and unhappy.  She dealt with poverty, illness and had her jaw wired shut for it to heal.  She survived a catastrophic engine failure in a two-person airplane.  She arrived at a motorcycle accident where her son lay on the ground.  Her daughter went through surgery and another devastating occurrence happened.  She went on to speak to other life-shattering moments that led her to that place where she was shutting everything out.

It was her sister talking her into going to a retreat that turned her life around.  She explained it was not overnight, however it definitely was that first light of hope.  She said that to get to the place of feeling empowered, you have to learn and do it through small simple action steps.

Gratitude is very important.  Listening to music is as well.
