  • How People Pleasing Gets in the Way of Happiness

The term “people-pleasing” is pretty ironic because at the end of the day, it’s more about trying to manipulate other people and control how they act or what they think about you. It’s our primitive brain’s way of staying safe and avoiding tough feelings, like disappointing someone or making them angry.

Because it’s something that’s so ingrained in our biological makeup and social conditioning, getting out of the people-pleasing feedback loop isn’t easy. Luckily, though, it's entirely possible. The rewards that await you on the other side, like contentment, authenticity, and your own happiness are worth doing the thought work around your values.

I’m challenging you to assess your beliefs, feel the feelings, and get really curious about where your patterns come from in order to come home to yourself. There’s a version of you that makes decisions based on what makes you happy, and does it unapologetically and guilt-free. Listen in to learn how you can tap into that mindset.

    • Why it's so important to address the underlying thoughts and feelings from our primitive brain

  • How to be Happy in Your Relationships

Where are you requiring that people act in certain ways so that you can feel happy and secure about your relationship? Most of us have an explicit list or manual for our friends, partners, parents, or really anyone that we interact with of how they're supposed to act. But, when you place your happiness in someone else’s hands, you’re taking a huge emotional gamble.

On today’s episode, I explore how to be happier in your relationships. I challenge you to ask what you can do, think, and believe to feel worthy and valuable in your own right instead of searching for it in someone else. There’s nothing wrong with being delighted by someone’s actions, but when you create expectations and extract meaning when they’re unmet, it sparks a toxic cycle in your relationships.

I share tangible ways to shift that story and start to love yourself more. The self-love movement can feel like a cliché at times, but it’s the number one thing that will help you cultivate more happiness in your relationships. Join me on today’s episode as I dig into how to build healthier, happier connections.

  • Imposter Syndrome

The great news about imposter syndrome is that you already contain everything you need to change your belief system and rewrite the story of belonging. It’s entirely possible to feel at home in your body and ditch the cycle of imposter syndrome一trust me, I’m living proof of it.

On today’s episode, I share the story of how I stumbled into the field of geology and struggled with severe imposter syndrome for many years. It wasn’t until I started diving deeper into my yoga practice that I was able to evaluate my thoughts and the stories that I created about them. I illustrate how my performance at work shifted when I started to collect evidence that I was qualified and capable of my position instead of believing that I was a fraud.

If you find yourself feeling like an imposter, you’re not alone. I offer up some questions to start tuning into those feelings and crafting a narrative that better aligns with your self-concept. Listen in to today’s episode to learn more about the root of imposter syndrome and how to work though those feelings.

  • Why Positive Thinking Doesn't Work (For Most Of Us)

Happiness is often on the same playing field as positivity, but positive thinking usually leads to feelings of shame or disappointment. What I like to practice instead is shifting to a place of neutrality and using a ‘thought ladder’ technique to eventually get to a place where I feel genuine contentment. On today’s episode, I explore the nuances of positive thinking, share examples of what toxic positivity looks like in action, and explain how to get out of that cycle.

How many times have you heard phrases like “fake it ‘til you make it” or “put on a happy face”? There’s an inherent judgment and inaccessibility to masking your hard-to-feel emotions, and I believe that it actually does more harm than good. When you try to embody happiness without truly feeling it, you start to bypass and gaslight yourself.

I break down my go-to techniques for processing emotionally challenging situations and finding a sense of peace. I get into the dangers of glossing over complex issues and also illustrate times in my personal life where this principle has come up. Listen in to learn more about how positive thinking isn’t always the solution to improving your mindset.

    Topics Covered:

    • The difference between positive psychology and positive thinking
    • How demonizing negative emotions actually keeps us from being happy
    • Recognizing when you’re relying on false positivity
    • Noticing bodily shifts when you practice neutrality
    • Rethinking positive affirmations

  • How Your Self-Concept Impacts Your Happiness

Self-concept is who you are, how you feel, and how you act in the world. It helps shape your daily life and plays a major role in your lived experience. In today's episode, I explain how your self-concept contributes to your overall happiness, how to identify positive and negative self-concept, and dive into my go-to ways to understand how it’s showing up in your life.

What does your inner-voice sound like? Is it kind or critical? Is it forgiving or harsh? The narrative that you hold about who you are creates how you feel about yourself, and what you're feeling dictates the actions that you take. Just as humans are multidimensional, so is the idea of self-concept. How you perceive your performance in your job is different from how you feel about yourself as a partner, friend, sibling, and so on.

The key to finding more happiness within your self-concept starts with tuning into that voice and understanding where your beliefs come from. I go through some tools that I find helpful for discovering and dismantling thoughts and beliefs. Listen in to learn more about self-concept and ways that you can start shifting it right now.

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform.

    Topics Covered:

    • How your self-concept relates to your happiness and satisfaction in life
    • The truth about our belief systems and stories that we tell ourselves
    • Where self-esteem and self-image come into play with self-concept
    • Examples of what self-concept look like in practice

  • Part of Being Happy is Feeling Like ___

Even though this show is called Happiness Created, it’s impossible to talk about easy-to-feel emotions without addressing the other hard-to-feel ones. In order to embody happiness, we have to practice feeling the whole spectrum of emotions and sharpen our resilience to work through challenges. On today’s episode, I debunk the top four myths that I hear about happiness and make the argument for allowing yourself to really feel your feelings.

People often feel like it’s unsafe to feel their emotions or that they lack the capacity to feel certain things. The truth is that emotions are just a series of physical sensations, and if you commit to showing up and being okay with the learning curve, bringing on hard-to-feel emotions won’t be nearly as intimidating as you make it out to be. In fact, resisting and ignoring those emotions will only result in more harm.

I also get into what my life was like when I wasn’t a ‘feelings feeler’ and share what my unsustainable coping methods used to be. Luckily, I’ve shifted away from saving up my tears and learned how to address my emotions in the moment, but it hasn’t always been a smooth process. Listen in to hear how you can expand your emotional experience and open yourself up in beautiful ways.

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform.

    Topics Covered:

    • Why I prefer to label emotions as ‘hard-to-feel’ and ‘easy-to-feel’ instead of ‘negative’ and ‘positive’
    • Recognizing that what we do is driven by how we want to feel
    • Understanding that our human experience was never meant to be bliss 100% of the time
    • Ways to practice feeling and processing your emotions in real time
    • Examples of what happens when you expand your capacity to feel the spectrum of emotions

  • Creating Happiness

Many of us have been taught to surrender our power over how we feel to other people and what's happening in the world around us. But, the reality is that we’re entirely responsible for neutralizing our thoughts and reactions. On today’s episode, I dive into where happiness and other emotional states come from and share ways to practice non-judgmental curiosity about your feelings.

Brain chemistry and a propensity to happiness play a large role in our emotions, but it’s just one piece of a very large puzzle. Learning how to step into what’s available for your emotional wellbeing is a challenging, yet extremely empowering process. We usually attribute our feelings to our environment, but what’s really happening is that we have a thought about people or their actions, which creates a feeling in our body that our brain translates to mean something.

For example, when someone cuts you in line at the supermarket, you’ve been conditioned to think that cutting the line is wrong, so it feels like a personal attack. Your thoughts jump to feeling frustrated, provoked, and annoyed. The good news is, there’s a lot of work that can be done to neutralize those thoughts and own your emotions. Listen in to learn more about that process and how to get started on your self-study journey.

    Topics Covered:

    • Debunking the myth that outside circumstances determine how you feel
    • Recognizing when and why you’re trying to control other people and the world around you
    • Being honest with yourself about the thoughts and beliefs that you hold around people’s behaviors
    • Undoing the subconscious training that we have around imposter syndrome and people-pleasing tendencies
    • Questions to help guide your reflections around your emotions and reactions
