Happy Independence Day from RRR – 3 July 2005

Listen Later

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

Do you know who this fellow is? Well, this being July 3, even if you didn’t recognize him, you may have figured out that it’s John Philip Sousa, “The March King.” And in preparation for tomorrow’s Independence Day holiday, in the final segment of this week’s show, we’ll hear three of his patriotic marches. We’ll also celebrate the birthdays of Jack Hylton and Richard Rodgers. In other segments, we’ll half-fill a request and say good-bye to a friend. There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be magically transported to an earlier–and we think better–musical era. Just click on the player above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Where Are You Going
One of our long-time regular participants of Ian Whitcomb’s Monday evening Salons is Gloria. Sadly for us she will not be there on Monday nights any more because she’s moving in order to help care for her mother who will be turning 90 this month. So here’s a set of rapidly rotating records dedicated to Gloria. See if you can figure out to where she’s moving.

Sunshine – Milt Shaw and His Detroiters / Eddie Thomas
Where the Shy Little Violets Grow – Milt Shaw and His Detroiters / Smith Ballew
Borneo – Milt Shaw and His Detroiters

Segment 2: Alvin’s Requests
A few weeks ago I got a request from regular listener Alvin requesting “Banking on the Weather” by Ted Black and His Orchestra and “Cheatin’ on Me” by Ben Bernie. The good news is that I have several versions of both of those songs, the bad news is that I don’t have them by those bands. But to at least partially fulfill Alvin’s request,

Banking on the Weather – Russ Carlson’s High Steppers
Cheatin’ on Me – The Varsity Eight
Banking on the Weather – Bertini and His Band / Tom Barratt

Segment 3: Jack Hylton
July 2 marked the birth in 1892 in Lancashire, England, of bandleader Jack Hylton. His surname was originally spelled H I L T O N, but by the time of his first professional engagement in 1905, he had changed the spelling to the showier H Y L T O N.

Just the Same – Jack Hylton AHO/Hylton, Rignold & d’Amato
The Kerb Step – Jack Hylton AHO / Sam Browne
Harmonica Harry – Jack Hylton AHO / Hot Hylton

Segment 4: Richard Rodgers
June 28 marked the birth in 1902 in Hammels Station, New York, of one of America’s greatest and most prolific composer of popular songs, Richard Rodgers.

I’ve Got Five Dollars – Arden & Ohman
Manhattan – The Knickerbockers (Ben Selvin)
Sentimental Me – The Knickerbockers

Segment 5: Sousa Marches
Tomorrow being the 4th of July, we’re going to wrap up the show with some appropriately patriotic songs, a set of Sousa marches, some of which may be unfamiliar, all played by Sousa’s band, and all conducted by John Phillip Sousa.

Sabre and Spurs – Sousa’s Band
Solid Men to the Front – Sousa’s Band
The Dauntless Battalion – Sousa’s Band

To close, with best wishes to you for a safe and pleasant 4th of July holiday, with gratitude to our troops around the world, and with prayers for peace, here is the Victor Mixed Chorus.
