OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Last summer - riding the alpine slides with kids.  Can’t remember which one, but had the brakes on the entire time.  Hardly had any velocity - I’m sliding down these suckers as 90 mph and they are barely moving…
On a thing should have been moving fast - but we were stuck sometimes, I think there are people who experience this in their spiritual lives…
what’s that all about?  Why do some people get it and others don’t-If you came to Christ and nothing much changed about your life-or look at Christians who on fire for Jesus wonder why your life can’t be like that-maybe struggle with sin that just completely overwhelms you and you feel like there’s no way you will ever find victory
We say - I just need to read the bible more, try harder, stop doing this…We are missing something. Does that make sense?  I call this “Spiritual Velocity”
back to physics class real quick, read the definition of velocity…  :)“Velocity refers to "the rate at which an object changes its position." Imagine a person moving rapidly - one step forward and one step back - always returning to the original starting position. While this might result in a frenzy of activity, it would result in a zero velocity. Because the person always returns to the original position, the motion would never result in a change in position. Since velocity is defined as the rate at which the position changes, this motion results in zero velocity. If a person in motion wishes to maximize their velocity, then that person must make every effort to maximize the amount that they are displaced from their original position. Every step must go into moving that person further from where he or she started. For certain, the person should never change directions and begin to return to the starting position.”-physicsclassroom.com
hear the last sentence? most powerful spiritual statements ever read on the “physics” website: Every step must go into moving that person further from where he or she started. For certain, the person should never change directions and begin to return to the starting position.
All of us have the same starting point all of us are under the law of right and wrong. Christian or not - what you do has an impact - may not care about impact-all lied and known was hurting people you loved.  -run to sex and know the guilt that came alon

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: A few weeks ago my mower breaks down, literally deck falls off it, scalps lawn, can't drive cause caught in the wheel.
can't even begin to tell you how frustrating...  interviewing here, Momma Sheila watched one of my sermons and it was about my lawnmower. My mower used to break down, literally, every time I mowed. the running joke in the previous ministry.  Sheila called me the lawnmower guy...
spent more time fixing the mower than spent mowing with the mower...
If you want to know what something is, look at what it produces. a lawnmower that won't mow, not a mower...  It's a lawn ornament
Jesus said it this way: Matthew 7:16-2016 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
Have you ever known someone who has worried whether they are saved or not? Maybe you've had that question...
Jesus makes it simple for usYour fruit tells me everything I need to know about your root.
So, how I do know what your fruit is?
ILLUSTRATION: When youth pastor, tell kids should date someone Christians
Some kid would say a Christian to get a pretty girl to date them…
So, I changed what I started saying to kids.  Gave list of questions could ask to see if the person had the fruit of Christian.
-treat their younger siblings well?-kind of person who would cut in line if thought could get away with it?++The bible calls this, walking in the light++
The answer to whether you walk in the light (show fruit) is not a question of what you claim to be, but what you actually are.
3 Questions to Help you Identify Good Fruit:1.  What does your time say about your love for the people of God?-Every week - people up here working on cards, fixing lights, changing diapers in the nursery, etc.
literally, thousands of man-hours sacrificing time to love on people.  To care for them, to go after them…
What about you?  What does the way you spend your time say about your walk with Jesus?-do you spend time p

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: I have a really good buddy who used to work in a coffee shop.  He said, he was working one day and Weird Al came into his coffee shop, you all know who Weird Al is, right?  Only the most prolific musician of the past 30 years.  If you don’t know, look him up. But he’s famous, right? My buddy is a HUGE Weird Al fan.  So, Weird Al comes into the coffee shop and my buddy is star-struck! As he walks up to the counter, my buddy gets all nervous and he’s like, “Weird Al, what can I get you?”Weird Al says, “Do you have soy milk?”My buddies like, “anything for you Weird Al…”  and he goes to work looking for the soy milk…He comes back to the counter and says, “Here ya go, Weird Al…” Weird Al looks at him and says, “I said do you have a phone book…” Ha…They didn’t have one and so my buddy said, “No, we don’t have one…” and weird Al walked out the door…My friend said he wanted to yell after him, “I’m sorry for failing you weird Al!” ha…

We’ve all been there, right? So worried about getting it right, that we end up getting it wrong…
I’ve had presentations that I’ve worked overtime on, know the material inside and out and get up there and just blow it
Have you ever felt this with God?
Felt like He’s asking you to do something, only to do it and feel like it’s all falling apart?
Or maybe you felt like you were supposed to do something but you were too afraid to take the step?
Today, I want us to look at learning to walk into risk with God…
Because, here’s the deal, I’m up here talking all the time about our mission advancing the Kingdom by living for God and loving people all the time, I know you are thinking about how to live that out in your life…
but I’m also aware that means you are going to feel some uncomfortable moments by choosing to live out that mission
-You are going to come against moments at work where you feel compelled to Advance the Kingdom but are worried it could put your job in danger-You are going to be coaching a little league team and have a kid ask you a question that you want to answer with the Gospel and be worried about the implications-You are going to feel like God is calling you to start inviting your neighbors over for a meal once a week and you’re worried about a million different things - will they come, will they think we’re weird, what will we do?
Living on mission means learning to live outside of what’s comfortable, so how do you do that?
    I want us to lo

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: My brother-in-law is a big man, he’s 6’ 8” tall and just a big fella.   A while back I decided I’d arm wrestle him to see what I’m made of.  We linked hands, looked each other square in the eyes.  He said, “you ready?”  Now, I have to tell you.  I’m no muscle man, but I like to think I’ve got something when it comes to arm wrestling.  But that day, I realized I had nothing.
Joe asked if I was ready and before I knew it he slammed my arm like I was a little girl…  I mean seriously…  I realized I had nothing…
Ever been up against a giant?  Something that seemed unbeatable by you?
Your whole world is turning to the digital and you feel like you just can’t keep up.
You’re facing life on your own for the first time in years and you have no idea how you’ll make it
Your business has grown and you’ve got to figure out how to scale, but you feel like you’ve lost control of the whole thing, nothing seems to work and you are struggling…
You are not alone in facing challenges that seem impossible…
Now, I know, not all of you are in this place, but If I know one thing about life, it’s that if you’re not in a challenging season now, it’s on its way…
SCRIPTURE: This is where we find David 1 Samuel 17…King David in the Old Testament is not a king yet - he’s just a boy - probably late teens to early 20’s-He’s not holding court and leading armies-he’s watching his fathers sheep and bringing lunch to his brothers
If you don’t know the storyThe two armies of the Philistines and the Israelites are drawn up against each other, every day from the Philistine side, this giant of a man comes out to challenge the Israelite army… Goliath - he’s 9ft tall. He carries a sword, a shield and has a huge spear (10ft tall)
Every day he comes out and defy’s Israel and every day no one goes out to challenge him…
David is door dashing some food for his brothers
And while he’s there, he hears Goliath challenge the Israelites - Goliath’s challenge is that if they defeat him, they will bet the servants of the Israelites, but if he wins, Israel becomes their servants…
David asks - “why doesn’t someone do something about this?”If you’ve heard this historical account before, you know what happens…
Someone tells King Saul that David is dumb enough and willing enough to go out and fight Goliath.
Saul brings him in, I think probably hoping for a champion, and in walks this shepherd boy…
1 Samuel 17:32-4032 David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: What are your top worries or fears? Are you worried about finances?  Some of you have businesses that have had to pivot and are barely holding on? Are you worried about your family?  Some of you have been so divided by the past year and a half about masks, politics, and that your relationships are strained and you can barely talk to one another. Are you worried about being safe?  Some of you have to worry about your safety and the safety of your kids because of the color of your skin. Some of you are worried that politically we are all being pulled and shoved around by politicians and the news and we’ve all been fed a huge load of garbage. some of you are worried that our entire country is falling apart…

Let’s be honest, I could go on all day with what worries us as Americans.
Can I just give you some perspective?
Ecclesiastes 1:9 What has been will be again,    what has been done will be done again;    there is nothing new under the sun.
There is nothing new under the sun…
I know it feels like the world you live in is so messed up and feels like it’s falling apart.
But so did the world Jesus lived in…
His world was full of political division and manipulation.  Children assassinating father’s to rule in their place, leaders suppressing groups in order to exact their authority and rule…
Racism isn’t new…  The Jewish people were completely suppressed by the Romans - they were regularly incited in order to be violently oppressed
The Jewish people themselves were racist against other groups…So much anger, so much division…
And financially?   There was no governmental welfare, people lived and died by the work of their hand.
Taxation was overwhelming…People literally having to sell their children into slavery to make it…
Fear and worry is nothing new…
It is into this setting that God speaks these words…Isaiah 35:4 4 say to those with fearful hearts,    “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come,    he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution, he will come to save you.”
It was messages like this that kept Israel, as a nation, strong through some of the most terrible events in history…
God was coming to rescue them…
How will you know this time has come? Check out Isaiah’s description of this moment when God comes to deliver

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: One of my favorite games to play at a Chinese restaurant is to have the person across from me try to recreate the picture of something behind them on the wall.  I’ll describe it to them and they do their best without looking at it to make the picture.  My kids love doing this.

What’s funny is The descriptions never make sense until they turn around and see what I’m describing.
    This is how prophecy works
See, the problem for most of us is when we read the prophecy in the bible, it doesn’t stand out as unique, because the whole thing is ancient
So if somethings 2000 years old or 2600 years old, it all seems the same to us…
But today, I need you to put on your smart people caps and look do some thinking
Because what I’m going to show you today is AMAZING!
    First of all
We have to go back over 2600 years…Let me set the stage
The prophet Isaiah is writing what we are about to read 630 years before Jesus
To give you perspective, if we were to read a prophecy in our day in age that was 630 years old it would be coming from the year 1391.
I totally considered trying to pretend like I had found this prophecy in my study about the modern invention of phones…
“In those days, the words will flow like lightning.  Flashing pictures will fill people's hands.  Your desires will be at your fingertips and you will hear the voices of your loved ones coming out of a box.”
Lol, I decided deceiving people was probably not a good thing for a pastor…
But imagine for a minute if that was a real prophecy written in 1391In 1391 - the Chinese were just inventing toilet paper…
You would read something like that and be blown away by the accuracy…
the people writing it would have been like my kids in the Chinese restaurant-but we would look back and see it clearly…This is what happened when Matthew looked back at the passage we are about to engage…
He looked back at it from 630 years later and realized that he was living in the moment the prophecy spoke about.
Jesus has just finished healing Peter’s mother-in-law - she had had a fever and Matthew says this…
Matthew 8:15-1716 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
Matthew is looking back 630 years to words that Isaiah wrote, like a blurry image to him, but with 4k clarity for us…
Can I read to you this prophecy that Isaiah wrote do

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: You ever seen something crazy in church? If you are online, I’d love for you to comment and let us know the craziest thing you’ve seen.

One time Jenni and I were visiting this church and we were listening to the preacher preach.  Honestly, the sermon had been a sleeper.  I was kind of falling asleep until the end.  He started telling this story that was really drawing me in.  It was getting good.  And then all of the sudden, I heard this, thud, thud from behind the stage.  I heard someone yell and then, no joke, this teenage kid came running out from behind the stage and did a cannonball into the baptistry.
I thought it was a setup for the sermon.  The whole church went nuts!  A youth pastor came running up from the back of the church and Jenni and I couldn’t stop laughing.  No joke, I was taking communion and trying to stop snickering so I could focus and take the communion.
It was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen in a church but I have to tell you, it’s not near the level of crazy that I’m about to tell you about…
    Check this out…
SCRIPTURE: Isaiah is in the middle of prophesying to the nations when God sends him to do this…  It’s written in the third person, so some scholars think that maybe one of Isaiah’s disciples wrote this…Isaiah 20In the year that the supreme commander, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and attacked and captured it— 2 at that time the Lord spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz.
Sargon sounds like one bad mama jama of a name right? He actually was-He has sent his supreme commander - this would be like his highest general to Ashdod - the capital of the Philistines and he attacked and captured it.-Here’s what’s crazy about that-There had been a point before this where that town had been besieged for 29 years had never fallen.-Sargon’s leader is able to attack and capture this impenetrable city
-Think Thanos from the marvel movies…-Sargon’s forces are unstoppable
And this is what God says to Isaiah to preach…He said to him, “Take off the sackcloth from your body and the sandals from your feet.” And he did so, going around stripped and barefoot.
ILLUSTRATION:[start to unbutton your shirt]I didn’t want to have to do this, but if when in Rome…  Ha, just kidding.  But I wanted to stop and let it catch up to you what God is asking Isaiah to do.  Isaiah is wearing a sackcloth - this is the clothing of a mourner.  He’s been mourning the way the nations have been mo

OPENING: Can you open this? Where are my undershirts? I’m out of toothpaste! I can’t figure out this math problem! what are we having for dinner? why can’t I play with my friends?

any of you ladies ever heard these things?  Ever had to say these things:
Have you brushed your teeth? Please start putting the toilet seat downDid you do your chores? Can you guys start putting the pillows back on the couch? Can you put your socks in the hamper? What did your teacher actually tell you? Here’s your wallet, it was right where you left it…
If you are a mom, you have likely heard and said every single one of these statements.
Because being a mom is tough
Mom’s have pressure both externally and even more so internally
But not just moms, there is pressure on all women.  There’s pressure to look perfect, have the perfect home, have perfect kids, to live up to every ideal out there.
There is an expectation for women to be super hero’s that can do it all and keep it all together…  All the time b Almost every movie now has the women in the movie as the heroin saving everyone, fixing all the problems.  That’s a lot of pressure to be put on you.  To think you have to always have it all together…
    and it’s unrealistic… and not fair…
SCRIPTURE: I think a lot of women would identify with Isaiah as he faced His call from God, listen to what happened to him…In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;     the whole earth is full of his glory.”4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”Isaiah 6:1-5
Isaiah is face to face with perfection and all he can do is see his imperfection.
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
Isaiah is not in the presence of a fake imperfection like what we see on Instagram or Facebook.  The perfect house, the perfect f

PERSONAL ILLUSTRATION: Years ago about 10 years into ministry I found myself not just lost physically but lost spiritually.
Early on when I came to know Jesus I was passionate and following Him closely.  I would read the scripture for hours, turn off the tv to spend time with God.  But then I went to bible college, I know sounds strange, but I started struggling in my relationship with God there.  All of the sudden, you had to read the bible for a class.  I transitioned to doing ministry and all of the sudden I had to read the bible to preach a sermon.
Can you imagine writing a 10 page research paper every week that you then have to get up and deliver to a crowd of people for them to judge whether it gave them anything to think about for the week?  The stress was high and honestly, I was like this bucket on stage…
[have a bucket with some water in it and a ladle to fill up cups on the stage]
I was giving but never filling
I had gone from being a guy who couldn’t get enough of Jesus, to having just enough to barely hold on
Literally, I would lay in bed at night feeling the tension between who I claimed to be and who I was and my prayer was this…
God, I want to want you…
I was just barely holding on.   My sermons began to be lifeless - I would yell in them and fake cry - I’m not proud of this - but I did it to manipulate peoples emotions so I could feel like I was good at what I did.
