OPENING ILLUSTRATION: [Have a teeter totter on the stage with two buckets attached that items can be put into]
Relationships are tough to balance, right? They can go from everything being perfect to everything being out of whack with just one phone call from your mother-in-law, or one misplaced pair of underwear.  You can go from being excited to see one another at the end of the day to wishing you had somewhere else to go at the end of the day pretty quickly.
[stand at the teeter totter and teeter it back and forth]
Here’s what I’ve learned in years of being married and from counseling couples whose marriages are struggling, is once the teeter totter starts to get too out of whack, bad things can start to happen.
It happens like this.  -He works long hours every day and spends time, even at work balancing the checkbook and paying the bills, only to find out that she bought a new pair of shoes without checking the account and now they are about to overdraft…[put papers representing bills in the bucket]-He knows she’s not pulling her weight.  -He heard the pastor say that husbands should wash the dishes to show their wives how much they love them, he’s been doing it every night and she doesn’t even seem to notice [dishes go in]-He’s tired when he gets off work, he just wants to take off his shoes and relax, but here we go again, he’s got to watch the kids and take care of them [put a toy in the bucket]
[the bucket for him is firmly on the ground now]
He’s mad because he’s doing everything and it doesn’t even feel like she’s pulling a 10th of the weight he’s pulling.
Let’s see what she has to say for herself-She gets up early every day to make his lunch and the lunch for the kids before going to work.  She has to shower before any of them have even thought about waking up.  No one ever even begins to say thank you. [put lunch box in bucket]-she is NEVER done with laundry.  It’s constant.  It’s like these people think it’s a contest to see how many shirts they can wear in a day.  She doesn’t want to leave work, just thinking about all that has to be done and no one lifts a finger, if they do it’s only because she complains, and she’s tired of feeling like a broken record [put a think of laundry soap in the bucket]-He tries to be romantic with her and doesn’t understand why she’s always got a headache.  -She takes off from work everyday early to go pick up the kids from school, drops them off and runs back up to work.  She feels so much guilt over this, she’s never told anyone, but she fe

-----------------------------OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Do you remember being a kid and trying to ask a girl out, or maybe being asked out?

I’ll never forget being in the 7th grade, spending the night at my buddies house.  We were all talking about girls and my friends convinced me to call one, Crystal Farmer was her name.  We got on the phone, I called, and said, “is Crystal there?”  They went to get her and when she came on the phone, all I could do was [breathe really heavy and creepy into the mic].  Ha.  I was paralyzed.  I’m sure Crystal thought she had some creepy stalker…
Figuring out dating, and love and relationships is SO difficult. And THEN you get into a committed relationship and guess what, it gets even more difficult..
ILLUSTRATION: During this early days I’ll never forget going to my dad and asking him, “Dad, how will I know when I’m in love…”  He gave me the classic dad answer.  “Um, ask your mom…”  Ha, what I ended up learning was, “you’ll just know…”
I know this seems like a funny place to start a sermon, but I think more damage has been done in families and relationships, over not understanding love, than just about any other thing
    Think about it…
People fall in love. People can be lovey dovey. People fall out of love “I no longer love him” "We just don’t love each other anymore"
Love gets the blame for all kinds of relationship highs and lows. But nobody can tell you how you know if you love someone, except you’ll “just know” Here’s the question to me: Is love something you fall in and out of or was love intended to be some thing much more?
Listen to how Paul describes love - now I know a lot of you know will know this passage, but just stick with me…
1 Corinthians 13:4-8a4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.8 Love never fails.
First of all, I need to say, Paul isn’t talking about romantic love in this passage…
Paul is talking about the concept of love and how it should affect every relationship - especially those within the church-but I don’t think it’s out of line to apply what he says here to all relationships…
Let me ask you to do an exercise with me…  I want us to read this passage again, but I want us to read it t

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: When I was growing up, the word holy meant two things to me.  The first, was you never wanted to wear holy underwear - my dad said if you got in a wreck you didn’t want them to see your un mentionable’s had holes in them.  The second, when I thought about a holy person, the picture in my mind was an old lady with a boney finger telling me “no”.
Today, we are going to talk about holiness and what it means, but I need you to take a moment and evaluate what you think of when I say holiness, because I have a feeling it might not be what the scripture thinks of when it’s said…
SCRIPTURE:Ephesians 4:2424 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Remember Paul’s 3 steps to a new you

    1. Take off your old self
    2. Be made new in the attitude of your minds
    3. Put on the new self - created to be like God

We’ve been focusing on the first two - we’ve talked about how to take off your old self, to truly die to self

We’ve talked about putting on the new attitude - to change your thinking and not be led by feelings.
Today, we are focusing on Putting on the new self and what that looks like…
Paul gives us a glimpse into what the new self looks like when He says “Created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness”
What do you think it mean to be righteous and holy
What’s the picture you think of when you think of holy?
monks and priests, old boney fingered lady? people who are separated from normal life and live these lives that are removed from the life we live…-they don’t dance, chew, or go with girls who do? Holiness has always seemed stuffy, unattainable, and frankly undesirable to me b Holiness seemed like a drag b but is that the way it’s supposed to be? Look, for most of us, holiness seems like a drag. It doesn’t seem like real life…-it feels like a bunch of rules and regulations
so, I wanted to answer this question by looking at Jesus-because if you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus
I sat down and asked myself, How did Jesus live out Holiness and righteousness
Three stories stuck out to me about Jesus’ holiness - I want you to notice how different they are from what most of us think of

    -----------------------------

OPENING ILLUSTRATION:[have a pair of kids toy handcuffs]My kids love the handcuffs…When my son Simon was little, we’d take his hands and put them behind his back and tuck them into his pants and tell him he was in handcuffs, he’d walk around with his hands behind his back, giggling and laughing.  It’s funny as a kid to be in handcuffs It’s terrible when you are an adult…

WE: Hopefully, none of you have had the experience of being in handcuffs…-I mean, at least not physically
But what about mentally? What about emotionally? What about spiritually?
I think more of us than want to admit have experienced the handcuffing of our hearts and minds
You know what I’m talking about, right-There is that sin you just can’t seem to get past…  Try as hard as you can, you just feel trapped-You know all the things the scripture says about you, but if you were hard pressed, you’d admit you don’t believe them.  You feel unloved and unwanted, and don’t see how anyone could want you-Your loneliness and angst is out of control, you feel like no one understands and you sit there feeling lost and hopeless-You can’t seem to let go, things are good in your life - but you feel the incessant need to control everything.  You know it really controls you, but you still can’t let go - you’re handcuffed by your need to be in control.
What if I told you the scripture offers a better way? I know, you’re thinking, “Kent, I’ve read the bible tons, and I still feel trapped…”
The problem is, most of us don’t see the solution because we the problem, at its core, is cultural.  What I mean, is that it’s a part of your culture - so you don’t see it.
It’s like trying to explain to a fish that they live in water.  It’s all they’ve ever known, so they don’t see anything but the water.
We are going to spring board again from what Paul says in Ephesians, how’s it going memorizing this passage?
Ephesians 4:20-2420 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

OPENING ILLUSTRATION:[have a yo yo on stage - will ultimately need two, one for each service][start playing with yo yo while talking]Yo Yo’s are fun, aren’t they, I used to know a guy who was a yo yo champion, he could make that thing do anything he wanted…Every few years my kids get one of these and I try to show my mastery, but I always end up hitting things and looking like a goober…
I don’t know about you, but one of the things that has been hardest for me about following Christ is the yo yo’ing of my life.  It can feel like one minute I’m doing good, and the next minute, I’m struggling with something I felt like I had gotten past.
One minute I’m living the life I think Christ intends for me to be living, the next minute I’m back to my old self…
    I’m just like a yo yo…
WE:What is it for you that’s the yo yo?-Promised yourself you’d stop yelling at your kids?  You were doing well till this morning…  -You struggle with gossip, think you’ve let it go.  But you’ve found yourself getting sucked back into conversations you shouldn’t be a part of
We yo yo and yo yoand the result is we just want to give upBThere has to be a better way.
Maybe you thought you were alone in this, you are not - both Christians who are new and who have been following Jesus for a long time struggle with this…
Luckily, the scripture gives us help…Let’s go back to the passage we are memorizing:Eph 4:22-2422 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Paul is giving this advice to the Ephesians because he doesn’t want them to go back to the life they just escaped…  He wants to stop the yo yo.
    Paul’s advice is this:

    • Put off your old self

(Paul reminds us that our old self is being corrupted by it’s deceitful desires - this is the part of you that longs for power that’s not yours, it’s the part of you that runs after material things believing they’ll bring happiness, it’s the part of you that seeks after fulfillment in relationships…  Your old self is who you were before you came to Christ…

OPENING ILLUSTRATION:We recently got some firewood delivered to our house and I’ve been trying to build some fires in fireplace.  Oh man, this wood still has moisture in it.  So, every time I try and build fire, I can barely get it going.  So, I did something crazy.  I had made a bunch of bacon one saturday and saw the bacon grease sitting there…  It was cold, and I wanted to get a fire going.  So, I came up with a crazy plan.  I poured the bacon grease on a small stack of paper plates, I put a bunch of paper towels in the grease and placed the whole thing under my wet wood and lit it.  Ha, some of you are thinking I’m crazy, you know that’s right!  Ha.  The fire started licking up that wood and eventually the wood caught!
Look, I’m hoping that some of you are here today because you’re wood is wet…  Spiritually you’ve been distant from God and you’re ready to give Him one more try…
I want to take you to a passage we are going to be in all month and hope that we can get a grease fire going under you!
Ephesians 4:17-1917 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
ILLUSTRATION:I would struggled parenting our kids when they were toddlers.  Able to walk around and do things like, turn off the tv or maybe pull a ladies hair when she’s holding that baby.  I knew I didn’t want them doing those things, but let’s be honest, they don’t exactly speak English. What do you do with that?A toddler, they doesn’t know if things are right or wrong.  All they know is what’s fun - they don’t have beliefs.  So when they are allowed to behave a certain way, they develop a belief that behavior is acceptable.
One of the best things I learned when we were parenting toddlers was this idiom, “For toddlers, their behavior dictates their beliefs”-when the baby has negative feedback for a negative behavior, they develop a belief that behavior is bad, when they get good feedback, they develop a belief that it’s it’s a good behavior
    Pewww…  Mind blown -

OPENING ILLUSTRATION:How many of you get a newspaper delivered to your house?  How many of you have never even paid for a physical news paper subscription?  How many of you don’t know what a newspaper is? Jenni and I were joking because the other day we were watching a rerun of an old television show from the early 2,000’s and these two guys were reading a news paper.  One of them gave part of the news paper to the other guy and they sat there reading it together.  I Joked with Jen that we should buy a news paper and show it to our kids before they completely go out of business.

The last 20 years or so has not been good on the newspaper industry…
I can pull out my phone and in under 20 seconds have access to all the news in the entire world under my thumb.
    That’s crazy.
It’s a bad time to own a Newspaper…Something that was a staple for years in households is no longer even considered by a new generation.
I don’t even consider buying a newspaper, it’s not even on my radarI would hate to be in the newspaper business
TAKE THE TURN:A few months ago, the elders, staff and I went on a retreat to pray and work through what our 3-5 year vision is for the church.
We worked through our mission and our target audience as part of this exercise.
The elders had tasked Matt McKenzie to come back with some statistics we were interested in learning more about, I want to share some of them with you…
There were two statistics that he shared with us that stuck out to me like a sore thumb…

    • When a mother comes to Christ, her family will join her at church only 17% of the time; but when a father comes to Christ, his family joins him 93% of the time
    • 90% of boys raised in church leave by age 20

BIt hit me…For most men, the church is as seemingly irrelevant as a news paper is to me

Does that ring true to you?How many of you know a young man in his 20’s or 30’s who see’s church as irrelevant?
That breaks my heart, it means we have done a disservice to these men
Here’s what it means for us as a church, I want to share some of the results of that weekend…
We decided that we were done with the loss of men to the Kingdom

Matthew 1:18-1518 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.”22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: When I was a kid, I was always terrible at responding to Christmas gifts that I didn’t really want.  We all get those, right?  You’ve been asking for a remote control car, and you get a hot wheel…  This Christmas, I wanted a Jean Jacket…  You know that’s right, I look good in a Jean Jacket.  It was the 80’s…  I’ll never forget, my grandma handed me a package, I could feel it was a thick JC Penney box.  When it was my turn, I ripped into it.  I opened it up and saw this perfectly stone washed, if you don’t know what that is, sorry for you…  Jean Jacket!  It was perfect.  I took it out and looked at it.  I put my arms in it, and as I’m slipping it on, my grandma says, “I know you have short arms, so I took the liberty to hem up the sleeves…” as she said that, I slipped on the coat and realized that my grandma believed I had the arms of a 6 year old.  I’m standing there with sleeves half way up to my elbow.  Every adult is looking at it and going, “oh, ah,” but I felt dejected, like Christmas had been ruined.
But what do you do in that moment…We all know what you are supposed to do, right? You smile and act like the gift was exactly what you wanted…
So, I tried, I put on the best fake smile I could and I said, “thanks Grandma, it’s exactly what I wanted…”
    I lied like a dog…
Truth be told, I’m terrible at responding to Christmas presents.  I’ve learned, thanks to people telling me, that I’m kind of picky when it comes to getting me gifts.  And I am definitely terrible at responding well when I don’t get what I was really wanting…
WE:I think most of us have that problem, especially when it comes to spiritual things…
Most of us have a Christmas gift wish from God. Things we have wanted to have him answer that may or may not have gotten answered the way we wanted…
-God, heal my mom-God, I really need this raise-God, help me right now, I feel so lost
We get stuck in these moments, not knowing if God is really for us, if He really loves us or not…
Can, I help put that question to rest and take you back to Christmas one more time?
THE BIBLE: We enter into the Christmas story again.  Not the one from Christmas songs, but the real one.  The one that is full of spiritual battle in the spiritual real, full of babies being born into unlikely places, full of bright nights and shepherds seeing angels while Bethlehem is completely quiet.
