I just need to give a disclaimer up front, this sermon is going to be heavy.

I’ll try and have some reprieve, but it’s a heavy topic… and want you to be prepared if this hits hard, it’s ok…
OPENING ILLUSTRATION: I’ll never forget being in 3rd grade, writing in my journal, hoping someone would read it and realizing later that no one had.  The night before, I had watched my brother - who I later learned was on drugs - get into a fight with my dad.  My dad wasn’t a violent man, as a matter of fact, this was such an uncharacteristic moment in my family that it really messed with me for years.  My brother was angry about something and had smashed a hole in the sheet rock - like a huge hole.  My dad came after him challenging him on why he had reacted like that - I later found out my dad had told him you’re not a man till you can take me - which was something my grandpa had evidently told my dad (the only difference was, my grandpa had been a boxer…)  All of the sudden, before I really know what happening - my brother swung at my dad.  My mom was crying, holding my little sister, I was terrified and yelling for them to stop.  My dad kind of tackled my brother onto the bed - my brother had some dumbbells on the bed and he grabbed it and cracked my dad on the ear- which started gushing with blood.  My dad penned him to the bed and banged his head into the wall and asked him if he was ready to stop.
How’s that for a start to a sermon. told you it would be heavy.
My family was really a pretty normal family - for us that was one isolated incident (by the way, my brother is a great guy now - so there’s hope :)
But I need to set off to the side and just talk to you today,
Since that point in time, unfortunately, I’ve gone on to experience a lot more disfunction and be on the front row to experience and see it.
Jenni and I did foster care and have had children through our home that have lived through unimaginable pain before even turning 5 years old…Some of you know what that’s like. For some of you, dysfunction wasn’t an anomaly, dysfunction was the norm
You grew up in a family that was abusive or where you were abandoned or devastated by what someone did to you
The reality is, all relationships have some level of dysfunction to them. b It’s really just a

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Do you remember the time you first realized you could control people with your behavior?  We call this manipulation.

I remember learning that with my personality I could get people to do things.  And I abused it.  I had this friend Casey who I’d go out to eat with.  I’d say, “Casey, before we leave you are going to buy me lunch…”  Casey, was like, “nope, no way…” and then I did this, every time Casey would take a bit of anything from his meal, I’d just look at his food and watch it go to his mouth with a sad look on my face.  Every single French fry…  Every bite of cheese burger.  Finally, about half way through, Casey was like, “Fine, what do you want!?”
There was a short period in my life where I would take advantage of it.  I could make people laugh too and get them to give me things for free at restaurants, etc.
Thank goodness, I matured and realized at some point that manipulation was a terrible way to get what I wanted.
Manipulation only causes resentment and leaves people feeling used.
But we’ve all known someone who never quite learned that there were other tools in their arsenal other than manipulation…
I knew a woman in a church who was the MASTER manipulator.
She would do ANYTHING to get her way. If she needed to be sweet and buy you things, she’d do that if she needed to emotionally abuse you, she’d do that if she needed needed to shame you, she’d do that
She could be the sweetest person or the most vile - she did whatever it took to get you to do what she wanted.
WE: You’ve felt this before, right?-Maybe your mom was constantly manipulating your emotions towards your dad, keeping you on her side and against your father and as you got older you realized you had been fed a story?-Or maybe your dad constantly held his money and position over your head.  You were constantly being controlled by a sense of shame and the feeling you weren’t good enough.-You’ve had the boss or coworker that is constantly using their position, their health or some other thing to get what they want and cause you to fall into line
and it’s all because Manipulation is a means to control people, situations, or outcomes without their full consent.
It’s why it produces resentment and the feeling of being used. Manipulation is all about YOU and getting what you want without regard to how it truly affects others.
Some of you have a picture of someone in your head… Maybe even your own family…

-----------------------------OPENING: I love roller coasters.  I love getting on one and having my guts turned upside down and inside out.  I’m that guy that’s laughing and throwing his hands up.  My favorite is when you are in line for a roller coaster and you are near some kids who have never been on one.  You can tell they are getting all nervous about it, talking about how they’ve heard it goes upside down - there’s always one of those kids that is excited and the other one is nervous and scared.  My goal is always to make that scared kid as scared as possible.  I know, I’m a terrible person, but it is a little funny, right?  Now, I do always reassure them that it’s going to be ok.

We’ve all known the kid who got it so built up in their mind and then went on the roller coaster and will never step foot in one again, no matter what you say to them.
They’ve had enough of it to think it’s not for them, but not enough to learn to love them.
and to be fair, we’ve all had that experience with something, right?
WE:-You tried coffee when you were younger and had just enough to know there’s no way you were going to like it-Sushi - who wants to eat raw fish?  We gave sushi to one of my kids before they were really ready and it came straight back up :)  ha, I guarantee you, it’s gonna be 10 times harder to get them to eat it ever again.-You tried sales and got turned down 5 out of 6 times on your first outing and you decided you couldn’t get out of that job fast enough.
We all know what it’s like to get a taste of something and to end up being inoculated against it rather than infected by it.
Since  Covid hit, we have all become experts at understanding the idea behind infection and inoculation.
An infection takes up residence in your body and life in such a way that it changes how your body works.
Inoculation gives you just enough of the virus to create an antibody in order to allow your body to fight off an infection.
We’ve all experienced this in some area of life, having just enough of something to know how to fight it off the next time
What happens when someone become inoculated against Jesus?-when they’ve had just enough of church and Jesus to know how to resist Him instead of being infected by Him?
ILLUSTRATION: I’ve seen this over and over again in ministry.  Parents who raised their kids forcing them to go to church and Sunday school, believing the proverb. Proverbs 22:6

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Anyone in here love April fools jokes?  I LOVE them! I was telling our kids when they were all young enough to pick them up and move them, we took them out of their beds and switched them to different rooms.  They all woke up like, “where am I?” Last year we made miniature peanut butter balls for our kids out of cheese balls.

Growing up in our house is either awesome or terrible, I’m not sure which…  I love a good joke…
But I don’t care for them when they are something serious…
You know, I think a lot of people don’t want to admit it but deep down, they wonder if this God and Jesus stuff isn’t just a big joke…b I mean, it sounds fanciful, right?
I get up every week and talk about God becoming a person. I tell stories about him walking on water, or healing people, etc. I talk about how he died - that’s not so spectacular but then, I talk about how He brought himself back from the dead…
    Christianity sounds crazy b Unless it’s true…
Paul understood this, he wrote to the Corinthian church about this because there were people saying that there was no resurrection of the dead…  That once you die, you are dead…
Paul says this…1 Corinthians 15:19If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
If it’s all a joke, then Christians are dumbest people on the planet…But I have to tell you something. I don’t think I’m dumb…So, how do you know if this is all just a big joke? B What if Jesus really did rise from the dead?  What would the implications of that be for your life? What if I could give you some evidence that is worth considering?
One of the first things we would have to consider is whether Jesus was even a real person who really died like the Gospels said He did…
MUNICH TALMUD. In the 1500’s the Pope told the publishers of Jewish works to destroy any mention of Jesus - because they were always negative -so, in the 1500’s the family that had the rights to print Jewish Talmud’s removed any mentions of Jesus in ancient Jewish lit.-later on they burned all the other manuscripts. Except for the manuscript known as the Munich Talmud-Munich Talmud, existed outside of reach of Pope remained in tact-so, what does it say about Jesus that was worth getting rid of? what’s a Talmud?  the Torah = Old Testament. Mishna = oral traditions handed down from Moses. Jesus will talk about traditions of fathers - = traditions are the Mishna.

    -----------------------------

OPENING ILLUSTRATION:[have the cross towards front of the stage for the invitation time]The Cross in 3 Encounters

b Pontius Pilate: He had a penchant for cruelty to the Jews.  Not just cruelty, but baiting the Jewish people into a position where he could then be cruel to them.

Once, he took money from the temple treasury - money that was not his.  He used it to pay for an aqueduct.  The Jews came together to protest.  Pilate then, after intentionally getting the Jews upset, placed Roman soldiers dressed like Jewish people in the crowd.  At his word, the soldiers drew out clubs and began to beat the Jewish people.  Many died under this cruel act…
So, we come to the cross and Pilate seems like a different person…  Instead of looking like someone who toys with the Jewish people at his pleasure, Pilate looks like someone who is afraid of them…B
You can see this easily in John 19…  Pilate is talking with Jesus and he tries to get Jesus to answer questions, and Jesus is silent.  Pilate says to him, “don’t you know I have the power to crucify or free you?”  Jesus is stone tough in this moment and tells Pilate he has no power except what’s been given him from above… and this is the next scene John paints
John 19:12 12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
Pilate acts from this point on like his hands are tied… b To be honest, this doesn’t match up with who he was in outside historical records…b Except for one thing
Scholars think that Pilate was appointed under a man named Sejanus. Sejanus. Sejanus was the right hand man for the emperor of Rome - Tiberius.  Who in 26AD retired to this remote island of Capri, leaving Sejanus in charge of the empire.  Sejanus hated the Jewish people and wanted to destroy them - that’s why Pilate gets away with his cruelty…
Now listen, in 31AD, Tiberius found out that Sejanus had been plotting a revolt, if you are into history, this is some crazy stuff Sejanus was pulling.  But suffice it to say, Tiberius got wind of it and came up with his own ingenious plan to deal with Sejanus.  He has this letter read that makes Sejanus think he’s going to be given ultimate power, while the long letter is being read, the commander of the army went out and told all the people

    -----------------------------

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Normally the Passover meal is full of celebration, fun, and meaning.  But this one has been unusually deep with meaning and mystery.
Jesus has longed to eat this meal with them.  One last moment with them before all hell breaks loose.
At the Passover meal, literally every element was pregnant with symbolism, from the bitter herbs they ate that represented the bitterness of their slavery to the roasted shank bone of a lamb, it represented the Passover sacrifice.
It is in the middle of this meal, all reclining around a table, that Jesus says these words…
Luke 22:19-2019 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Jesus is taking this meal that they were used to being full of symbolism and introduces a new symbol
This bread is my body given for you, this cup is the new covenant in my blood.
ILLUSTRATION: Have you ever known someone who has a higher view of themselves than they really should?  they walk in to the room wanting everyone to see them and think they are really something.  If you don’t know that person, you might be them :)
I don’t know if you know how big of a deal what Jesus just said is…Jesus is making a claim that He is ending the original agreement with God and implementing a new one.
I know, you’ve already decided you believe in Him, but I need you to put yourself in the first century for a moment and recognize, He just made a HUGE claim…
He is literally telling them that His body and His blood is the fulfillment of prophecy. See, for thousands of years, God had been dripping promises into history that there would be a new covenant introduced into the world and that it would not be like the original.
Hebrews 8:8-128 But God found fault with the people and said[a]:“The days are coming, declares the Lord,    when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel    and with the people of Judah.9 It will not be like the covenant    I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand    to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,    and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.10 This is the covenant

give them a $25 gift card for playing
    Ha
Give it up for our great contestants! Sometimes you can zoom in on something so much that you miss the bigger picture…
I think a lot of people miss some of the bigger picture of what Jesus was up to in the last few weeks of his life…
There is beauty in the detail, but there is power in the whole picture. I want to take you into a story that normally we stay zoomed in on, but today, I want to show you the up close and then zoom out for you to see the whole picture of what Jesus is up to.
This comes towards the end of Jesus’ life.
John, the apostle is writing and he shares this story…
John 11:1-3Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”
Lazarus, this friend of Jesus’ isn’t just sick, what we are about to find out is that he’s actually dying…
This is where Pastors normally zoom in.
See, Jesus says this next: John 11:4-74 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”
Here’s what Pastors normally tell you - you’ve heard these sermons a million times if you are in church.
Jesus seems crazy - he waits two day? By the time He gets there we find out that Lazarus is actually dead, not just a little dead, but stinky bad dead-4 days dead - the Jewish people believed the spirit hung around for 3 days, so this is past the point of return for them
and Jesus shows up. Jesus does something incredible. He raises Lazarus from the dead. If you are not a Christian or new to church, you just heard me right…The eye witness account was that Jesus rose Lazarus from the dead
Pastors will make all kinds of points about this, I’ve preached this a bunch myself…
But, There is something bigger going on here…  Let’s tie some things toget

-----------------------------OPENING ILLUSTRATION: I’ll never forget inviting a friend to a special Easter service we were having at our church.  There was this powerful worship and this moment where the cross was described in detail with all the blood and gore of it.

It was powerful.  Moving.  You ever been to one of those?  Where it almost burns itself into your memory.
I remember asking my friend after it was all over what he thought about it.  I was really hoping he’d be ready to give his life to Jesus afterwards.  He said, “it was really weird, what was with all the blood and gore?”
Man, what I had thought was powerful seemed weird and gory to him.
Have you ever wondered “what’s with all the blood talk in Christianity?”
If you’ve haven’t had much experience outside of the bubble of Christianity, it might not be weird to you
We will sing things like,  Nothing but the blood…  Imagine how that sounds to a non-Christian. There’s power in the blood…  “Vampires much?" Covered by the blood…  “Do you need medical attention?”
ILLUSTRATION: Did you know because of Christianity’s focus on blood, there were actually people in the early days of Christianity who thought Christians were eating babies.  Because the Romans would “expose” babies they didn't want to keep - take them to the wilderness and leave them to die.  Christians would take these babies in and raise them.  But because we talked about eating someone's flesh and drinking their blood at our gatherings, people thought we were eating the babies.
So, what’s with the blood?  because I’ve met good, God loving Christians who can’t really explain “why” blood matters…  They just know it does.
THE JOURNEY:As with most good things, we have to start with a journey across thousands of years of history, hopefully I can make it interesting for those of you who hate history.
We are going to start with an interaction with God and Moses…  Moses, you know him from the burning bush and leading God’s people out of slavery… This is nearly 1400 years before Jesus…
Moses asks God to allow him to see God’s glory. God says he will do this for Moses, but that Moses can’t see his face, because if no man can see God’s face and live…
So, God puts Moses in a cave, and covers it with his hand and allows Moses to see his backside…
And when Moses comes off the mountain, his face is glowing and people can’t stand to look at him, he has to wear a veil to hide the glory…
700 years later, Isaiah the prophet had a similar experience where God showed him a vision of the

OPENING ILLUSTRATION:A few months ago we went up to Natural Bridge with Dean & his family.  Dean waits till we get up there to let me know about this thing called, Fat Mans Squeeze.  Do you know about this?  It’s where you have hiked up this mountain, almost going straight up it, I mean, I’m dying.  And you get up there and there is this passage that you have to squeeze through one at a time.  This is me on my way up through it, note that my body is wider than this thing I’m about to walk into…

Piper, my daughter was making fun of me because it looked like I was going to get stuck, all my kids were like, “Look at me dad, we can just walk through…”

ME:I wish I could say that my life didn’t have pinch points like Fat Mans Squeeze, but the truth is, I’ve got the same kind of squeezes all the time when it comes to my relationships…
One of the biggest squeezes that Jenni and I have faced is with finances.
Finances can put the squeeze on a relationship like almost nothing else.
WE:-Maybe you know what I’m talking about - your hours got cut in half and now you are fighting all the time about money-You keep your money separate, your spouse doesn’t know it, but you are jealous because after all the bills are paid, they have all kinds of money and you feel like you have nothing-You are the saver in the family and your spouse is the spender.  There is a constant tension between the two of you and your difference in how you handle money
There was a study done that found that 36% of couples were stressed about money at any given time.  -the numbers went up the younger the couple was…that means that over 1/3 of the couples in this room and online are stressed about money RIGHT now.-My guess is the numbers are even higher with Covid.
Money and finances can put the squeeze on you.
Today, I want to suggest to you a biblical mindset when it comes to dealing with money and then share some practical things you can do to put yourself in a better position relationally when it comes to finances.
Gaining a Biblical Mindset When it Comes to Finances: Jesus tells a parable about the Kingdom of Heaven in Matthew 25 using money and resources as an example.
Mt 25:14-3014 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[

There is so much confusion in our culture about what a man or woman is and how do we function.  This week, I’m going to look at what the bible says when it comes to the role of men and women and the nature of our relationship together.  DISCLAIMER:  If you don’t listen to the sermon all the way through, you may come away with a different point than what I’m actually saying, because there is a twist at the end…  Don’t miss it!  Help us advance the Kingdom, support our online ministry (harmonychurch.cc/give).  Got kids?  Check out Harmony Kids online (updated weekly)  https://www.harmonychurch.cc/harmony-kids-online/!

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Went hiking a month ago to find this arch @ Red River Gorge.  didn’t know we had taken the long difficult path, it was tough travel, but when we got there it was so beautiful.  -going to go through some tough country-may feel a little backwards (not progressive) - stick with me to end -surprise twist - and hopefully something a little beautiful
1 Corinthians 11:3-103 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels.
ILLUSTRATION: What’s all this head talk - Piper walking through with ball in her hoody for her head…  What’s Paul talking about
Paul making two points in passage - one cultural one theological 1.  Cultural:  Men and women should lead in a way that is honoringb2.  Theological:  God created men and women differently and this should influence how we live b Paul is making an argument that the man is the leader of the wife and he is the source of the woman. head in OT referred to either leader or source - head of river[PAUSE]How does that sit with you? like me - gets you antsy - not favorite things to get up and preach…Because In our culture - we have worked hard to bring equality to men and women -  and the reality is, we are moving quickly to a point where to be man or woman is a choice you make, not something you are born into.
