Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the entire history, as we know it, of number 12 Grimmauld Place.

As the ancestral home of the Black family, number 12 Grimmauld Place is portrayed in both the books and the films as a rather decrepit and dreary townhouse befitting of the dark wizards who called it home for the better part of two centuries. Located in a predominantly Muggle neighbourhood in North West London near King's Cross Station, the townhouse was originally owned by non-magical folks. While the exact date that number 12 was built is unknown, we can assume that it would've been around the same era as the townhouses in Claremont Square that were used to film the Grimmauld Place scenes in the Harry Potter movies. In fact, the Claremont Square townhouses have been rumoured to be the inspiration behind the Black's family home in the novels. These real-life houses were constructed between 1815 and 1828, so with this assumption that they represent the inspiration for the fictional number 12 Grimmauld Place, I think it's safe to conclude that the Black's family home was also built during that same Georgian Era.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the history of Maledictuses. As we've delved deeper and deeper into the wizarding world of Harry Potter, we have been introduced to a many number of creatures and curses. But one of the most fascinating to have been revealed to us Muggles in recent years is that of the Maledictus, which is a combination of both creatures and curses!

Always female, a Maledictus is a human who suffers a type of blood curse. This affliction is present from the time the girl is born and enables her to transform into a creature - the species of which depends on the specifics of each individual curse. For a time, these transformations can be controlled and instigated by the Maledictus, with her changing from human to beast and back again at will. However, eventually, the curse forces the woman into the permanent form of a beast.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the history of the infamous village, Godric's Hollow.

Located in England's West Country, Godric's Hollow is a village that both Muggles and wizards call home. Although the exact founding date of the village is unknown, being that it is the birthplace of Godric Gryffindor - famous for being one of the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - we can assume that some version of the settlement has been around since at least the late 10th century, as Godric was born in the latter half of the 900s.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the magical instrument known as the Time-Turner, and the problems associated with such a device.The Time-Turner itself is first presented in the third instalment of the Harry Potter series: The Prisoner of Azkaban. It is described as a small hour-glass that can be worn around a witch or wizard's neck, and throughout both the book and film one of these devices is worn by none other than Hermione Granger. As the plot of The Prisoner of Azkaban begins to unfold, we learn that Hermione has been using the device to travel back in time in order to accomplish a what-should-be-impossible course load. Simply put, she was using time travel to attend multiple classes at the same time. Certainly not what I would've used it for--but hey!In any case, the introduction of the Time-Turner came with questions--and potential plot holes. Of course, the greatest issue presented by the existence of a Time-Turner is: if one can simply go back in time to "fix" mistakes or save those who die, isn't that what Dumbledore, The Order of the Phoenix, or even Harry and his friends should do with each threat that subsequently comes up in the series? Today we're discussing the history of the undead, zombie-like creatures known as Inferi.Although most widely referred to by us Muggles as Inferi, this description is actually a plural indication of the singular "Inferius". Both the singular and plural names of these creatures are of Latin origin, with "Inferi" translating to "underworld", and "Inferius" being a derivative of "Inferus", which means "below". J.K. Rowling has confirmed that the etymology for the Inferi was meant to be a reference the idea that they are lesser beings than humans and that they are not part of the world of the living.Although similar to zombies, the Inferi were created by Rowling for the wizarding world of Harry Potter with the intention of being distinctly different from their rather infamous undead counterparts. They are the cursed corpses of previously living people of either Muggle or magical background who have been brought back from the dead by a dark witch or wizard using rather complex magic. The intention of the curse is to create a warrior or guardian out of the dead person. An Inferius can be created by killing someone and then using their dead body or by using a corpse that is already without life. For example, in order to create the Inferi that Voldemort used to protect his Horcrux that he hid in the remote dark cave that Harry and Dumbledore visited in 1997, it's believed that the Dark Lord went out and murdered a bunch of homeless Muggles, as well as an unlucky wizard or two. After killing these people, he then cursed their dead bodies to become his mindless servants, tasked with protecting the Horcrux from intruders. It would seem that Inferi can also be created by dark magic without the actual presence of a witch or wizard, as Harry indicated that if he were to be drowned in the lake alongside the other Inferi, he too would become one of the dead guardians of Voldemort's Horcrux, cursed with the same eternal responsibility of guarding the cursed locket. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the history of one of the most famous wizarding bars in the entire world--the Leaky Cauldron.

Located at number 1 Diagon Alley within the wizarding world, and "accidentally" built into the development of Charing Cross Road within Muggle society, the Leaky Cauldron is notably the oldest pub in all of London. The bar and adjoining inn was built sometime in the early 1500s by a witch named Daisy Dodderidge. Dodderidge, who, of course, became the Leaky Cauldron's first landowner, had the bar constructed at the same time as many of the other shops that now run the length of the wizarding street Diagon Alley. It's said that since that time, not much has changed and that the Leaky Cauldron has always been somewhat of an unassuming place, simply meant to offer a comfortable and welcoming establishment to those interested in grabbing a pint or looking for a room to stay in.

The Leaky Cauldron is made up of a ground floor, as well as a small upper level. On the ground level there is the bar, as well as a staircase that leads up to a few bedrooms for travellers looking to spend the night. There are also two main entryways into the bar--one from Charing Cross Road in the front, and one out back from Diagon Alley.

It's something we learn right from the get-go, when Hagrid takes a young, 11-year-old Harry Potter to his family vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank in The Philosopher's Stone. And, as you may recall, what Harry finds upon this, his first visit to his vault, is somewhat of a small fortune. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing what happened to Lord Voldemort's Wand AFTER his defeat at the hands of Harry Potter during the first wizarding war. I'm also going to be discussing how he EVENTUALLY got the wand back.Let's dive in.When Voldemort first caught whiff of Sybil Trelawney's Prophecy, he went in to a bit of a state of panic. His regime and his power, previously entirely unchallenged, was suddenly at risk of crumbling, which prompted him to take immediate action. While it could have been either Neville Longbottom OR Harry Potter, Voldemort came to the conclusion that Harry Potter was the boy that the prophecy was talking about, which drove him to seek the boy out. On Wednesday October 31st, Voldemort travelled to the town of Godric's Hollow where the Potter family lived. It was here that Voldemort, in an attempt to murder Harry, ended up murdering James & Lily. When he entered their home he first ended the life of James Potter, followed shortly by Lily.But as we know, Voldemort was unable to make any more progress after that, being thwarted by young Harry and Lily's sacrificial protection. After firing a killing curse at Harry, his curse rebounded back at him- destroying him (mostly, anyway). This marked the end of Voldemort and the First Wizarding War. But my question is, provided that Voldemort had been DEFEATED- how on earth did he later get his wand back? Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing the death of the Potters, Azkaban Prison, and the imprisonment of mass..murderer? Sirius Black.Now, the Sirius Black that we know and love from the books and films, Harry's godfather, was a 'good' wizard through and through. He may have come from the 'Black' family- a wizarding family linked to many witches and wizards of dubious, if not outright poor morality, but Sirius was no bad egg, which is why his imprisonment in Azkaban for the murder of 12 muggles was always a questionable decision in the minds of Harry Potter fans.We know in reality that it was Pettigrew who, using a dark and powerful blasting curse- killed those 12 muggles. But someway, somehow, Sirius Black was blamed. After being banished to Azkaban, seemingly the whole world turned on Sirius, even the ghost-portrait of the fat lady, and he was left there to rot for an astonishing 12 years. He was eventually able to escape the island fortress by turning in to his animagus form, a black dog, and squeezing through the bars.Today I want to answer the question: Why DIDN'T Sirius Black get a trial?
