Psychologists are beginning to realize that an alter ego can empower a person to be a better version of themselves.

They refer to this as the “Batman Effect”. For thousands of years, the Bible has been encouraging Christians to do a similar thing by imitating God and walking in love as Christ did. But there are significant differences.

Ian explains these as he explores:

Have you ever received a gift that didn’t mean very much?

Sometimes a gift doesn’t mean very much to a person because he doesn’t have much use for it. A plastic whistle from a Christmas cracker is one thing. Donated bone marrow for a person with leukaemia is another.

Sometimes a gift doesn’t mean very much because it has little value. Perhaps it didn’t cost the giver anything. But if a kidney donor dies after making a successful donation, she has paid the ultimate price for the life of her friend. And the recipient will never be able to settle the debt because even if she offers her life it won’t be enough, it won’t bring the donor back.

Ian reflects on the ultimate Christmas gift in terms of:

4. How to accept it.

We are hardwired for the supernatural.

Today we look at why The Virgin Birth is not an addition to the Christmas Faith that can be removed but is absolutely essential.

So much of life seems to be defined by impersonal forces beyond our control. Is there any order in the chaos?

The Christmas narratives reveal that Mary and Joseph experienced hardship at many levels – just as we do. And from Mary and Joseph’s perspective, it would have seemed that there was little meaning in all they had to go through. With hindsight and the help of the gospels, it is possible for us to see what they went through with greater understanding. And as we do this, it brings our own struggles and mission into perspective.

Life is not about you, but Christ died for you.

This week Craig shares from a passage in Colossians about the majesty of God and our response to who He is. When we have the correct perspective - it changes everything!

Everyone wants to live a full life – one that is worthy of the title “life”.

However, if we try to seize life whilst ignoring God because we don’t want to submit to Him, our lives become increasingly futile and lifeless.

This will change if we are prepared to humble ourselves, allowing God to teach and lead us.

The journey begins with recreation as God gives birth to us as His sons and daughters. Without such a rebirth, fullness of life is unattainable.

But conversion is only the start! In order to choose life, we must do so on a daily basis. Ian explains how to do this in today’s sermon.

A Kingdom is a place where a King reigns.

The Kingdom is spoken about many times in scripture. God's Word tells us that the Kingdom is here on earth now, but also of a future day when it will be seen in all its fullness. What exactly does that mean? And where do we fit in as Christ-followers?

Today Craig shares how we need to live in the tension of both of these truths.

So often we live lives that are not worthy of the title “life” because we are not living the full life God intended for us. And living a lifeless life is not a worthy response to the gospel.

Paul has been urging us to render a worthy return to our priceless salvation by growing up. Jesus anticipates maturity in His followers! And we grow up by becoming the kind of church that makes itself grow. Paul teaches us to do this by 1) building and maintaining unity, and 2) by serving one another in love.

Today he adds another string to the bow by urging us to reject the death that comes from the old life. But to do that we need to understand the old life’s:

II. Origin

III. Outcome

There is a 5 letter word that we often find difficult to hand over completely to the Lord - our WEALTH.

When it is spoken of in church we may squirm in our seats, and it may be the area of life we don’t really invite God into.

Jesus spoke into this topic on many occasions and today Craig will share from the Parable of The Rich Fool in Luke 12.

Regardless of whether you consider yourself wealthy or not - this message will challenge and encourage you to live free from anxiety as you place your resources in The Lord’s hands and unleash generosity for God's Kingdom in your life.
