Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Music Superstar, Jon Secada
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest, Jon Secada, is a multi-award-winning singer, songwriter and producer whose soulful, romantic voice and beautifully unique fusion of jazz, Latin, R&B and pop, has made him an international superstar for over 30 years, with well over 20 million records sold worldwide.
He’s given us dozens of hit songs including “Just Another Day”, “Do You Believe in Us”, “I’m Free”, “Angel”, “Sentir”, “If You Go”, “Too Late Too Soon”, “I’m Never Too Far Away”, and many more. He’s one of the first and most successful bilingual artists to achieve international crossover success. He’s written hit songs and collaborated with superstars like Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez, and he’s performed with everyone from Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra to Luther Vandross and Olivia Newton-John.
And most recently, he’s released a wonderful new album called “Fascination”, which is a bilingual tribute to the legendary Nat King Cole. And let me tell you, the word “versatile” doesn’t even begin to describe our guest.
He conquered Broadway not once but twice, playing “Danny Zuko” in “Grease”, and then playing the MC in “Cabaret”, as well as starring in a touring production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. On television, he was a judge for 4 years on “Latin American Idol”, he’s been a guest judge on several other South American TV music competitions, and he was a celebrity contestant on the very first season of “Mira Quien Baila”, which is the Latin version of “Dancing with the Stars”.
The list of awards and accolades this man has won is jaw-dropping: 3 Grammy Awards, a whole slew of Billboard Music Awards, ASCAP Awards, BMI Awards, an American Music Award nomination - and believe me, I’m just scratching the surface. And our guest is also a bestselling author, whose 2014 memoir entitled “A New Day” touched me deeply because it chronicles his remarkable journey of resilience, courage, embracing change and reinvention, and unwavering devotion to musical creativity and family.
He’s also been highly recognized for his extraordinary record of public service, in support of arts education in public schools, the fight against AIDS and Hepatitis-C, and with the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Miami Children’s Hospital. He served on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, and in 2016 he was named Humanitarian of the Year by the Muhammad Ali Foundation.
He’s also a highly respected educator, having taught at the University of Miami, and now at Florida International University's Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts. And if all of that weren’t enough, I can’t help mentioning that in 1993, Rolling Stone named him the Best Male Vocalist, and Playgirl magazine named him one of the 10 sexiest male rock stars on the planet.
