Today’s guest, Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs, is a renowned actor, writer, director and producer who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of “Freddie Washington”, better known as “Boom Boom”, one of the “Sweathogs”, in the classic TV sitcom “Welcome Back Kotter”, in which he co-starred with Gabe Kaplan and John Travolta.  

He also played “Cameron Sanders Sr.” on the popular daytime drama, “A House Divided”, for which he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. And of course, we remember him as “Noah” on the groundbreaking 1977 TV miniseries, “Roots”.  And he played Michael Jackson’s father, Joseph Jackson, in the 1992 miniseries, “The Jacksons: An American Dream”, for which he was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. 

He’s also appeared in many other movies including “Claudine”, “Cooley High”, “Youngblood”, “The Annihilators”, “L.A. Heat”, “Southlander”, “A Chance in the World”, “The Perfect Mate”, “The Contract” and many more. And on TV, you’ve seen him in dozens of great shows including “Barnaby Jones”, “Hill Street Blues”, “Alien Nation”, “Diagnosis Murder”, “Roseanne”, “Gilmore Girls”, “Mind Your Business”, to name only a few. And who can ever forget his performance as “Brah Hardy” in the 2023 TV miniseries, “Legacy”? 

And in the late 70s he conquered Broadway, starring in “I Love My Wife”. And if all of that weren’t enough, our guest is also a recording artist. In the late 70s, he released 2 albums, “Lawrence Hilton Jacobs” and “All the Way…Love”.

And most recently, our guest has written and directed an excellent feature film called “The Grotto”, which has already won a number of prestigious film festival awards.  The movie tells the story of a woman in the midst of an emotional upheaval, who inherits a half-interest in a struggling nightclub, where she encounters eccentric performers and discovers a heartbreaking secret.

The movie will be released in theatres and on major streaming platforms in the very near future, so please keep an eye out for it. Our guest is currently in New York preparing to star in the World Premiere of Joshua Harmon’s play entitled, “We Had a World”, which will be presented by the Manhattan Theatre Club at the New York City Center Stage 2 from February 25 to April 13, 2025. Our guest has taken time out of her very busy rehearsal schedule to speak with me today.

On Broadway, he starred in three classic Neil Simon plays: “Brighton Beach Memoirs”, “Biloxi Blues” and “Broadway Bound”.  And he reprised his starring role as “Eugene Jerome” in the movie version of “Brighton Beach Memoirs”. He also played “Stanley Jerome” in the TV movie version of “Broadway Bound”. 

His feature film credits include “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, “Caddyshack 2”, “Stealing Home”, “Weekend at Bernie’s One and Two”, “Class Action”, “Death Becomes Her”, “Breaking the Rules”, “Swinging with the Finkels”, and “Andover”, for which he won the Audience Choice Award at the Orlando Film Festival. And for his performance in “Snatched”, he was named Best Supporting Actor at the Hoboken International Film Festival. 

And on television, we remember him as “Jonathan Maxwell” on “Gimme a Break”, “Jonathan Eliot” on “The Single Guy”, “Harry Kennison” on “In Case of Emergency”, “Harrison Marlowe” on “Significant Mother”, “Dave” on “Good Girls”, and “Daniel Bennett” on “Moonshine”, in addition to a whole slew of guest appearances on many other great TV shows like “ER”, “Friends”, “CSI Miami”, “Medium”, “Hot in Cleveland”, “Law & Order: SVU” and “Scandal”, to name only a few.

He’s also highly acclaimed for his voice work in iconic animated shows like “Tom & Jerry: The Movie”, “A Bug’s Life”, “Garfield: The Movie”, “Toy Story 3”, “Cars 1 and 2”, “Tom Sawyer”, “Inside Out”, “Big Mouth” and “American Dad”.   

And on Broadway, our guest has appeared in numerous shows including “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife”, “The Producers”, “Sly Fox”, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, “Kiss Me Kate” and “The Big Knife”, for which he won a Drama Desk Award and was nominated for a Tony Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. 

And from December 11 to January 12, he’ll be starring on Broadway in Simon Rich’s brilliant play, “All In: Comedy About Love”.

Today’s special guest, Renée Taylor, is a highly popular and beloved, Oscar nominated, multi-award winning actress, writer, producer and director who has been dazzling audiences for over 60 years. 

We all remember her portrayal of the quintessential Jewish mother, “Sylvia Fine” - Fran Drescher’s mother - on the hit TV series “The Nanny”, for which she received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. But her stellar career and body of work extend far beyond that popular show.  

On Broadway, she starred in 3 plays that she also wrote: “Lovers and Other Strangers”, “It Had to be You”, and “If You Ever Leave Me, I’m Going With You”, which she wrote AND directed . And she was nominated for an Academy Award, along with her beloved husband Joe Bologna, for co-writing the 1970 movie “Lovers and Other Strangers”. She and Joe also wrote and starred in the 1971 movie, “Made For Each Other”, which earned them a nomination for a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy. And they wrote and directed the wonderful 1989 film, “It Had to be You”, based on their Broadway show. They also co-directed and co-starred in “Love is All There Is”. 

And who can ever forget our guest as Ava Braun in Mel Brooks' classic 1967 movie, “The Producers”? She also appeared on the big screen in “The Detective”, “A New Leaf”, “Last of the Red Hot Lovers”, “Lovesick”, “White Palace”, “Delirious”, “Boynton Beach Club”, “The Do-Over”, “How to be a Latin Lover”, and many more great movies. 

On television, besides “The Nanny”, you’ve seen her in dozens of shows including “St. Elsewhere”, “Thirtysomething”, “Daddy Dearest”, “Dream On”, “Everwood”, “Law & Order: SVU”, “How I Met Your Mother”, to name only a few. And she’s appeared in numerous TV movies and miniseries including “A Match Made in Heaven”, “Pandemic”, “Weird Loners”, and “Bedrooms”, which she and Joe Bologna co-wrote, co-directed and co-starred in. She and Joe also co-wrote and co-starred in the 1974 TV movie “Paradise”, for which they received an Emmy Award nomination for Best Writing. And they WON an Emmy Award for writing the brilliant TV movie, “Acts of Love and Other Comedies”.  

And if all of that weren’t enough, our guest is also a best-selling author of a very entertaining book entitled, “My Life on a Diet: Confessions of a Hollywood Diet Junkie.”  And a few years ago, she went on tour with her hilarious one-woman show called “My Life on a Diet”.
