1. Visit one of the newest National Parks: Indiana Dunes! We used to go here all the time when we were kids (and when it was still a state park). We would camp there and spend most of the day on the beach, frolicking in Lake Michigan and running up and down the dune there. 2. If you are in Indianapolis, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is top-notch. It’s 5 stories and full of activities for kids and adults! Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

3. Spend a day in Columbus, Indiana, the modern architecture capital of the United States. The city website has both guided and self-guided tours.

5. Clifty Falls State Park. Clifty Falls State Park in Madison offers year round adventure for those who seek it. The stunning waterfall changes dramatically by season, ranging from delicate mists, to massive plunges of water to icy, frozen displays. There are also hiking trails, a Nature Center, picnic facilities, and courts for outdoor games.

6. Marengo Cave. Marengo Cave is a U.S. National Landmark and arguably the most popular natural attraction available in Indiana. Take an hour long tour through the Dripstone Trail (roughly one mile) or explore the Crystal Palace in just over a half hour

1. Garden of the Gods in Shawnee National Forest in the southern tip of the state. At Garden of the Gods, you'll hike through dramatic rock formations, perched atop large rolling hills with spectacular views of the forest.

2. Explore Starved Rock State Park. Starved Rock’s hiking trails meander through towering trees, scenic overlooks and beautiful rock formations. The park is home to 18 canyons and more than 13 miles of hiking trails that take you by waterfalls, sandstone overhangs, and bluffs. You’re also likely to spot stunning wildlife along the way.

3. Take an architecture boat or walking tour in Chicago. Chicago is known around the world for its architecture. Visit iconic skyscrapers, elegant hotels or the legendary houses of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Chicago Architecture Center has over 85 tours to choose from! Kayak the Urban Jungle perhaps too.

4. Pere Marquette State Park. Largest state park in Illinois. Frequent nesting spot for bald eagles hike and bird the day away!

5. Xterra Illinois Wilds Tri. Run with a wolf pack, swim with the fishes at Wildlife Prairie Park.

1. White Water Raft the Salmon River.

3. Head to the Niagara of the West. Shoshone Falls.

4. Craters of the Moon National Monument: Famously called "the strangest 75 square miles on the North American Continent" by an early explorer, and it is indeed a unique and memorable landscape. This monument is named for the seemingly endless craters, lava flows, and piles of loose rock. The area's terrain is so other-worldly that the Apollo astronauts even trained here in preparation for their moon missions. The monument boasts 60 lava flows and 25 cinder cones as well as what is called the Great Rift, a 62-mile-long crack in the earth's surface. The last volcanic activity in the area is said to have occurred nearly 2,000 years ago.

5. Sawtooth Mountains and the town of Stanley: In less than a three hour jaunt from Boise, you can be in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountains. The site of the jagged craggy peaks are worth the trip alone. From Boise take Highway 21 north to the small funky town of Stanley where the outdoor opportunities are endless. Think world-class hiking, fishing, and biking. Or you can simply find a nice riverside spot to relax and take in the beautiful scenery.

6. Hot Springs: Idaho has more soakable hot springs than any other state, with approximately 130 natural pools that are just the right temperature. Near Boise, there are two types of hot springs. The first are wild, undeveloped hot springs on public lands, many of which require a short hike. The second are commercial hot springs around Boise.

Kayak the Napali Coast: In its second year and second issue, National Geographic Adventure ranked kayaking Napali Coast second on its list of America’s Best 100 Adventures, right behind rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. That pretty much says it all. It’s the adventure of a lifetime in one day, involving eight hours of paddling.

2. Hiking to Ka’ena Point: Ka’ena, a state park as well as a protected natural area, comprises 850 acres of undeveloped coastline that centers on the point where it is said the souls of the ancient dead leapt into the eternal darkness. The views are incomparable; shells can be scavenged in keyhole coves in calm weather; whales spout offshore during winter; and threatened native plants flourish. It’s a trek that will change your mind about O’ahu being “too crowded.”

3. Eat at Coconut’s in Maui and then go tent camping with Maui Camping Company.

4. Big Island 4WD Off Roading trek. You can visit 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones on this road trip around the island.

5. Whale watching on a zodiac boat. Whales migrate between November & March to mate & have babies. Whale song, breeches & more. Just magical.

6. Visit Black & green sand beaches as you make your way to the most southern tip of the United States on the big island. Plus: Punalu’u Bake Shop.

2. Adventure in Jekyll Island Forest. This is the first place Mike R was stung by a jellyfish :). Driftwood beach is one of several spots to adventure there!!

3. Camp on Cucumber Island: Only a certain number of people are allowed on the National Seashore at a time so you never have to worry about overpopulated trails or campsites. You can also see the Dungeness Ruins of the Carnegie family mansion on the island.

4. Explore Savannah with its historic district and spanish moss covering trees. While there, take a trip to Tybee Island - they have a lighthouse and a fort from the Civil War (Ft. Pulaski) to visit

5. If you are in Atlanta, take a trip to the Georgia Aquarium, which is the largest in the world and then take a walk through the Botanical Gardens.

1. Take a camping beach trip to the Florida Keys with a stop at Lazy Dog Adventures in Key West. Stop at the Ernest Hemingway Museum to visit the cats with 6 toes (Ernest Hemingway was given a white six-toed cat by a ship’s captain and some of the cats who live on the museum grounds are descendants of that original cat, named Snow White.)

2. Scuba dive shipwrecks in Biscayne Bay National Park.

3. Take a kayaking trip through Big Cypress National Preserve.

4. Florida is a paddlers’ paradise with more than 4,000 miles of state-designated trails open to kayakers, canoers, and stand-up paddle-boarders. Cruise silently through one of the world’s largest mangrove swamps at Collier-Seminole State Park in Naples. The park’s 13.5-mile Blackwater River trail follows a gently flowing tidal river into the backwaters of the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

5. Take a road trip along the Atlantic Coast: If you haven’t ridden the stretch of A1A south from St. Augustine to Daytona Beach, give it a shot. There are sites to see in the 50-some miles but the standout is the Atlantic Ocean. A1A largely hugs the coast and you’ll be just about 10 feet above sea level as you pass Anastasia State Park Fort Matanzas Marineland the iconic Pier in Flagler Beach and mile after mile of oceanfront cruising. This is a rare experience and the sight of the ocean and sound of the engine is pure gold.

1. Drive the Scenic Byway: The Red Clay Scenic Byway takes you through the stunning Brandywine and Red Clay Creek Valley, the Nanticoke Heritage Byway brings you through the native lands of western Delaware, and the Harriet Tubman byway takes you to often overlooked historic spots along the Underground Railroad in the first state. All of these make for beautiful, relaxing and educational drives, but my favorite is probably the Delaware Bayshore Byway along Route 9 that takes you through some of the most scenic marsh, shore and farmland in the entire state.

2. Have a vacay in Dewey Beach: Dewey Beach is famous for being the Put in Bay for the east coast/Washington DC crowd. They have movies and bonfires during the summer months and you can body surf in the Atlantic.

3. Create your own triathlon and put it on Cape Henlopen State Park!

4. Go birding & hiking in Middle Run Park. Over 190 species of birds, the best hiking trails in the state, 860 acres, and more await you at Middle Run.

5. Visit the Roosevelt Inlet Shipwreck from the American Revolution. The mere existence of the wreck was relatively unknown to locals until 2004, when it was uncovered during a dredging operation near the inlet, off the coast of Lewes. It wasn’t until 2006 that underwater archaeologists determined the dormant ship was most likely a European commercial vessel that had run aground sometime in the 1770s, making it a fascinating relic of colonial America’s journey to independence. Though the remains are in a surprisingly well-preserved state, only a small portion of the hull is intact. Still, archaeologists were able to determine that the ship sank offshore in March of 1772 (now near the current inlet, which didn’t exist then). The ship’s name was the Severn, captained by Jonathan Hawthorn, and all crew survived.

Go see a show at Red Rocks Amphitheater: Though Red Rocks is known for its out-of-this-world concert venue, visitors are found at here any time of day—often running the steps for grueling, high-altitude endurance-trainings sessions. Surrounding the venue are two hiking and biking trails: 1.4-mile Trading Post Trail and six-mile Red Rocks Trail.

4. Fruita Colorado. They have mountain biking, hiking and rafting for all types, be it a leisurely float down Ruby and Horse-thief canyons or a heart-pounding surge through Westwater Canyon. Also check out Colorado National Monument - Colorado National Monument's Rim Rock Drive is one of the most spectacular drives in the United States. Redrock canyons, crisp blue skies, and verdant green juniper splash fantastic views along the way for motorists and bicyclists. However, the road is challenging, narrow, and steep in some sections with sheer drop-offs.
