1. Natchez Trace Parkway, Natchez to Nashville, TN. History and natural beauty abound along the Natchez Trace. The 450-mile trail was traveled by traders, missionaries, early settlers and Indians for thousands of years. Today, visitors can drive along the famous parkway, taking part in everything from hiking and horseback riding to exploring historic sites, such as Indian Mounds and the ghost town of Rocky Springs.

2. Head out to Ship Island on the Gulf Coast. Here in the north central Gulf of Mexico, about 11 miles off Mississippi’s Coast, are some of the last undeveloped barrier islands in America. Part of Gulf Islands National Seashore and protected by the U.S. Park Service, these exquisite sand islands offer visitors the first high-quality beaches for swimming and shelling east of New Orleans!

3. The only one of its kind in this part of the country, Flora’s Petrified Forest has been 36 million years in the making, and offers visitors the chance to view fossils that exhibit perfectly preserved details. Exploring this natural wonder is a breeze thanks to a self-guided nature trail, which includes many points of interest and informative markers

4. The longest of the state’s Rails to Trails’ conversions, the Tanglefoot Trail spans 43.6 miles, and takes adventure seekers on a history-filled journey through fields, forests, meadows, and wetlands, navigating the same paths as the Chickasaws and Meriwether Lewis. This trail’s even terrain and numerous stopping points make it easily navigable for people of any age.

5. Referred to as “a natural treasure in the Mississippi Delta,” the Greenville Cypress Preserve spans 16 acres and features a diverse terrain that includes sloughs, an area of mixed woodland, and a meadow, all of which can easily be viewed from the boardwalk that navigates the preserve or the on-site observation deck.

3. Niagara Cave - Niagara Cave is a limestone cave located in Harmony, Minnesota. The grotto is among the largest in the Midwest, and is home to a 60-foot subterranean waterfall, 100-foot-high ceilings, ancient fossils, unusual limestone rock formations, calcite flowstone, an echo chamber, and even a wedding chapel for the adventurous affianced.

4. Hike to Devil’s Kettle - the mystery waterfall in Judge C.R. Magney State Park. The park is best known for the Devil's Kettle, an unusual waterfall and rock formation in which half of the Brule River disappears into a pothole. “For years, people have tried to figure out where that water goes. Logs and Ping-Pong balls tossed into the churning cauldron seemed to simply vanish, fueling speculation that the lost branch of the river might flow for miles underground, carrying bobbing debris down to the distant shores of Lake Superior or off to some underground cavern. Now, finally, a researcher from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) thinks he’s cracked the riddle of Devil’s Kettle. “It’s a beautiful optical illusion,” said DNR mapping hydrologist Jeff Green, who first marveled at the wandering waterway during a family trip to Judge C.R. Magney State Park years ago.The disappearing half of the river, it turns out, reappears pretty quickly downstream.

1. Sleeping Bear Dunes + Traverse City: Stretching 35 miles along the northwest coast of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakefront encompasses 50,000 acres of unique “Third Coast” terrain, including the evocative dunes after which the park was named. Traverse City is known for its Cherry Festival, which happens each July, but it’s one of the best small towns in Michigan. Bring your bike and take a ride through the TART trail, stop by one of its many breweries and chow down at Little Fleet.

2. Visit Mackinac Island - the only city that has banned cars. The island’s population of about 500 permanent residents and an additional 14,500 or so seasonal visitors gets around almost exclusively by foot, bicycle, or horse. The entire 3.8 square-mile island is a designated National Historic Landmark and over 80 percent is preserved as Mackinac Island State Park, where visitors can enjoy Mackinac’s natural scenic beauty through over 70 miles of hiking and biking trails.

1. Visit the town of Plymouth, MA, the site of the first Pilgrim settlement, founded in 1620. Plymouth Rock, a boulder in Pilgrim Memorial State Park, marks the place where settlers are thought to have landed on shore. Plimoth Plantation is a living history museum dedicated to telling the history of Plymouth Colony from the perspective of both the Pilgrims and the Native Wampanoag people.

2. Take a trip out to the Blue Hills Reservation, a 10-minute car ride from downtown Boston. The Skyline Loop Trail offers three miles of challenging hiking crossing several summits throughout the park. You’ll follow blue blazes on this hike, where you’ll pass highlights like the Eliot Observation Tower, which offers a panoramic view of Boston.

3. Cape Cod Rail Trail. Head down to the Cape for this unique trail. It follows what was once a 22-mile railroad track through Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. With the creation of the Old Colony Railroad Company in 1848, this track was originally one of the first ways that connected the once-isolated Cape Cod to Boston. Today, the surface is partly paved for bicyclists and also has an unpaved section ideal for walking, running, and horseback riding. One of the best parts is that you can easily find a beach off of any trail.

4. Continuing the AT tradition! Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts. The Appalachian Trail travels 90 miles in Massachusetts as the trail winds through the Berkshires. The trail passes over the highest point in the state at Mount Greylock with an elevation of 3491 feet.

5. Walk the Freedom Trail in Boston! How do you get lost on it? Hmmmm…

6. Visit the Boston African American Historic Site.

Visit Assateague Island National Seashore: Located in both Maryland and Virginia, Assateague Island is a 37-mile long barrier island located off the eastern coast of the Delmarva peninsula facing the Atlantic Ocean. The northern two-thirds of the island is in Maryland while the southern third is in Virginia. Assateague's wild horses are well known, even to many people who have never been to the island.

2. Bike the East Coast Greenway: The East Coast Greenway is a walking and biking route stretching 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida, connecting our nation’s most populated corridor. Greenway highlights in Maryland include the scenic Jones Falls Trail into Baltimore, the rural Torrey C. Brown trail north of Baltimore, and the B&A Trail leading delightfully to the port city of Annapolis.

3. Fed Fitness Group Workout pre dawn followed by True Blood Juice at Pure Raw.

4. Visit and walk/bike Gettysburg National Military Park. (Oops it's located in Pennsylvania but Mike R was in Maryland when he visited for the day so he was confused. It's a funny conversation piece in this podcast!)

5. Ride the Rails Trails: While the train is still a great way to get around, there aren’t that many around anymore. The railroad's loss can be your gain, as more and more of these abandoned railroad tracks have been paved over and turned into biking and hiking trails. The Western Maryland Rail Trail boasts 28 miles of flat, paved bike trail along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, and the Baltimore-Annapolis Trail connects Annapolis and Glen Burnie along the former B&A Short Line Railroad. There are more than a dozen rail trails in the state, so you can see much of Maryland this way.

See the end of the Appalachian Trail: Named Mount Katahdin, meaning “The Greatest Mountain,” by the Penobscot American Indians, this scenic mountain is many things to many people including the northern end of the Appalachian Trail and the highest point in Maine at 5,270 feet above sea level, but above all it is a gift to the citizens of Maine.

3. Bike the carriage trails of Acadia National Park.

4. Hike the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine.

5. Take a sea kayaking tour of the bays of Portland Maine followed up by a self guided craft brewery tour.

6. Hike the “Bold Coast” trails near Cutler Maine.

1. Tammany Trace Bike Trail is a hike and bike trail that spans from downtown Covington, through Abita Springs, Mandeville and Lacombe and ends in Slidell.The trail begins at the Covington Trailhead, right across the street from Covington Brewhouse and around the corner from Columbia St. Tap Room & Grill. From there, it runs behind the Abita Brewing Company brewery and into Abita Springs (where the Abita Brew Pub is, which has no affiliation with the brewery), then on to Mandeville, where it passes by Chafunkta Brewing and Old Rail Brewing. Old Rail is a great place to stop — in addition to local beer, it has a solid food menu and plenty of space to stretch out. (Wherever you stop, remember to drink lots of water along the way.)

2. Avery Island: For lovers of hot sauce and leisurely strolls through beautifully manicured parkland is Avery Island, a salt dome just a 20-minute drive from the Cajun town of New Iberia. Every drop of Tabasco hot sauce on Earth is bottled on Avery Island by the McIlhenny Company, the family-owned firm that has been making the world’s most iconic hot sauce since 1868. Visiting here also includes a visit to Avery Island’s Jungle Gardens, 170 acres of beautifully maintained semitropical landscape featuring massive live oaks, bamboo, and a kaleidoscope of flowers, plus alligators, deer, and a lively bird sanctuary that helped rescue the snowy egret from the brink of extinction.

3. New Orleans Jazz Festival - The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, often known as Jazz Fest, is an annual celebration of the music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. The term "Jazz Fest" also refers to the days surrounding the festival and the many shows at unaffiliated New Orleans nightclubs scheduled during the festival weekend.

4. Climb Driskill Mountain. 535 feet gets you to the summit of the state. A large pile of rocks marks the “summit.” 48th out of 50 for the US State’s high points.

5. Q50 Trail Running Extravaganza in Bogue Chitto State Park on 2/1. Finishers of the 52 miler and 39 miler get a walking cane and while there are 6 trail run events that day you will only get ONE shirt no matter how many you do.

6. Cemetery Ghost Walking or Cycling Tour in New Orleans.

1. Do the Bourbon Trail: Located in Louisville, Lexington, Bardstown and the areas between, either doing a full-day or hitting up a few distilleries is a fun way to spend a portion of your time in Kentucky. If you just want to stay in Louisville, there’s a urban bourbon trail that you can go on! Bonus item: If you have a friend who lives in Louisville and has access to Lakeside Swim Club, you should totally go. It’s made out of an old quarry and is huge. You do have to either be a member, which is almost impossible because of the long list, or know a member to get in. No walk-ins allowed.

2. Spend the day in Mammoth Cave National Park: This is the world’s longest cave. Over 400 miles of the Mammoth Cave’s interconnected passages have been surveyed since Native Americans first began to explore it between 2,000 and 8,000 years ago. The world’s longest cave system, Mammoth Cave is 100 miles longer than the planet’s second and third-longest cave systems. There’s a bunch of tours, so check it out!

3. Backpack through the Daniel Boone National Forest and throw in some rock climbing time at Red River Gorge.

4. Visit Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace, a National Historic Site.

5. Stand Up paddling is awesome in several places : Grayson Lake, Cumberland Falls (moonbow), caves!

6. Runners should check out the Kentucky Derby Running Festival. April. Run through Churchill Downs

1. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve: At one time there was more than 170 million acres of tallgrass prairie across the United States. Today, less than four percent of it remains, and most of it is right here in Kansas, preserved at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. With more than 40 miles of trails to explore, the best time to visit is in the fall, when the tall grass reaches its peak height.

2. Visit Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park: Little Jerusalem is owned by The Nature Conservancy. TNC partnered with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism to make portions of the area open to the public. 332 Acres includes Two permanent hiking trails take you to multiple scenic overlooks at your own pace. This just opened in October 2019!

3. Visit the Largest Ball of Twine! There is not much in Cawker City but the local businesses get in the spirit with twine-themed artworks in the windows and a painted twine stripe on the sidewalk. However, driving around the area is an experience. The neighborhood is slightly empty and eerie with odd collections in the residents’ yards and broken-down buildings everywhere. The perfect site for a horror film.

4. Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, Barton and Stafford Counties.

5. Visit the World’s largest hand dug well in Greensburg Kansas!

5. Cedar Rock State Park - Explore Frank Lloyd Wright's only signature home in Iowa. Cedar Rock, the Walter Estate, is constructed of steel, glass and concrete. The estate includes a stunning Usonian-style home, river pavilion, council fire and a formal entrance gate. This complete Wright design also highlights the original furnishings and touches designed or selected specifically for the site.

6. High Trestle Trail Bridge in Madrid, Iowa - Via Atlas Obscura: Half a mile long and 13 stories high, the bridge over the Des Moines River Valley lights up the wide night vista. A 25-mile trail winds its way through five Iowa towns, from Woodward to Ankeny, with a dramatic crossing over the Des Moines River Valley. The High Trestle Trail Bridge is half a mile long and 130 feet high, and is said to be among the largest trail bridges in the world.
