The journey of a butterfly represents to me a fresh start and a new chapter in life after going and growing through some painful and dark moments. I hope this poem encourages you to push through those hard times and to continue moving forward one step at a time in living the best life you can today. 

The ‘Ōhi‘a lehua legend as explained from this excerpt:  "In Hawaiian mythology, ‘Ōhi‘a and Lehua were young lovers. The volcano goddess Pele fell in love with the handsome ‘Ōhi‘a, but he turned down her advances. In a fit of jealousy, Pele transformed ‘Ōhi‘a into a tree. Lehua was devastated. Out of pity, other gods turned her into a flower on the ‘ōhi‘a tree. Or, some say Pele felt remorseful but was unable to reverse the change, so she turned Lehua into a flower herself. When a lehua flower is picked, the rain will come representing the separated lovers’ tears. "

One of my favorite poems. This was written on a hike I was on in the mountains on Oahu, Hawaii and I came across this tree growing at the very peak overlooking the valley below. It surely looked like it survived some rough seasons from the elements and then I wondered how old this tree was and what kind of history it's been through during it's lifetime. Enjoy!

🗣 The story behind this poem begins with an early morning run on the beach and there was no one else in sight except a flock of seabirds. I stopped and sat on the sand to watch them play, eat, splash around in the water, then fly away, and I thought to myself what a fabulous life they live!
