December 24, 2021 Enter His Rest Day 27: The Fruit of Abiding with Christ
But I say walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh.... the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; against such there is no law. Gal 5:16, 22-23
As we wrap up this Enter His Rest Prayer Challenge I thought a reflection on the fruit of Spirit would be helpful. These fruits are truly what it looks like to abide with Christ. As we learn to rest in the love of God regardless of the circumstances that are swirling around us, these fruits will grow. We will become more loving and joyful, more patient and kind. We will find it more natural to choose the good and be faithful. God's gentlest will radiate from us and we will have strength to exercise self-control. This is our prayer and this is the work of the Holy Spirit in us. As we discussed yesterday, we cannot makes these fruits come through self-effort...only through abiding. With self-effort we may succeed for a while or under certain circumstances but the depth of transformation we seek is only possible through God's grace...through ever-deepening relationship with God. December 23, 2021 Enter His Rest Day 26: Remain on the Vine
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples." John 15:1-8
Today’s meditation points to our ultimate goal on this earth: learning to “abide” in Christ and bear much fruit for the kingdom of God. This is what I found in the dictionary when I looked up the word:
Abide (v) : 1. to remain; continue; stay 2. to have one's abode; dwell; reside
This definition alone creates a good place to begin meditating on this passage today. How can we remain with Jesus, continue and stay with him? How can we make our abode with him and dwell with him? Over the last six months or so my family has felt called to memorize and recite together Psalm 91 every night before bed. Today's verse comes from the very beginning of this beautiful and powerful declaration of the protection we have under God's care. As we continue exploring how to allow ourselves to truly abide and rest in God's love and peace, this psalm also gives us some powerful points to ponder. Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from everyform of evil. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
This weeks theme is our ultimate goal, the ultimate path to peace: abiding with Christ. To remain in perfect union with him is to be in perfect peace. We will not experience this fully on this side of eternity, but all that we do on the path of holiness is meant to draw us into deeper union and thereby deeper peace in Christ. Today’s passage gives us a beautiful and simple path to this union: 1. rejoice always 2. pray without ceasing 3. in everything give thanks.

Lord, my allotted portion and my cup,you have made my destiny secure. Pleasant places were measured out for me; fair to me indeed is my inheritance. I bless the Lord who counsels me; even at night my heart exhorts me. I keep the Lord always before me; with him at my right hand, I shall never be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, my soul rejoices; my body also dwells secure, for you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor let your devout one see the pit. You will show me the path to life, abounding joy in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. Ps 16:5-11
As we conclude this third week of Advent and our mini exploration with God of the desires of our heart, I am inviting us to take some time to mediate on where every desire of our heart ultimately finds fulfillment. The Lord is always calling us to a deeper place of surrender and abandonment to him and his love for us because He knows that ultimately this is where every desire is satisfied and lasting peace is found. As we allow God to lead us and take care of us, he provides a beautiful future for us. If we surrender in trust to him, we are able to receive the joy and delights he has planned for us, even when they don’t look like we expected. He is ALWAYS faithful to provide…

Today’s passage is from the book of Daniel, one of the prophets from the Old Testament. I encourage you to read the entire passage from chapter 10 in the book of Daniel. There are so many things we could ponder from this book of the Bible, but today I want to encourage you to take some time to recognize the reality of the spiritual war that rages around you and your response in times of trial.
