Last week in group spiritual direction, I had a client that had discovered the asshole-inadequacy paradigm coming up in their lives and I realized that it’s time to share the paradigm with all of you. I started discovering this paradigm, myself, a few years ago. I see it come up with clients when breaking down who and how they are in social situations. When we begin wondering at who we are in our true selves, our capital S self, then we begin seeing how we don’t act out of that self in social situations. It’s the place where it’s easiest to see, so we can really gravitate there. We begin seeing how we’re kind of an asshole, but it doesn’t make sense in relation to our inner dialog that’s all about inadequacy. 

Today I’m explaining what the asshole-inadequacy paradigm is, where it comes from, and how we can start showing up without it.

Today, I’m chatting with Mason Mennenga about trends of belief in the modern United States. Mason calls out that conservative evangelicalism is losing followers in big ways, while we’re seeing Christian nationalism is pretty common tongue and has major influence in our political and governmental systems. Today we're talking sex!

So many folx have been given the context that they do not belong with or to themselves even—especially in their bodies. Today we’re discussing sex education as a access point to power and agency, and ultimately, healing and liberation. 

Dr. Celeste Holbrook is a sex educator, speaker and horse loving Texan who has dedicated her life to helping people experience pleasurable, connective sex through mental and behavioral changes.  She speaks to audiences of all backgrounds, deftly diffusing the sensitive topic of sex through humor and a knack for making the awkward approachable.  Celeste believes that everyone deserves to feel like they belong and uses the lens of sexuality to teach us how.

Many of the folx I sit with in Spiritual Direction have received unmeetable standards from patriarchy, white supremacy culture, high performance culture, and rigid religious culture that berate them from every angle in every minute of every day. Every action and every thought is fodder for judgment for this inner panel of witnesses. 

When this panel of given voices and given narratives is in charge, we cannot be honest or vulnerable with ourselves because our brains and our bodies KNOW that we are not safe enough to be honest or vulnerable with ourselves. The cost to all of this, we cannot be vulnerable with others either… which means no one really knows about the panel or how nasty they are. Today, we talk about what the hell to do then. ;)
