February 14, 2024 Heal with the Reel podcast - Special guest Catherine Law - Survivors to Thrivers
Catherine Law is a survivor, thriver and the creator of 'Why Do We Stay?', an online platform dedicated to educating and empowering individuals on the topics of healthy relationships, intimate partner violence, and other manifestations of gender-based violence. Currently in the final months of her Criminology PhD, Catherine’s thesis analyses the relationships between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), self-esteem, and intimate partner violence, with a particular focus on variations across sexual orientations.
Previously earning a First-Class honours degree in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice and Penal Change, Catherine secured a prestigious Fulbright—funded PhD scholarship, enabling her to pursue her studies in the USA. Drawing from her wealth of expertise, she has lent her insights as a university lecturer, specialising in domestic and gender-based violence, and as a policy officer within the Scottish Government’s justice division.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Catherine is deeply committed to community service, including as a Violence Prevention Trainer and Outreach Officer at her university’s Victim Advocacy and Violence Prevention Centre, as well as serving as a board member for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaigns.
Catherine’s life passion is to use her academic, professional and personal experiences to help eradicate domestic violence. Though initially she was the last person she thought partner abuse would happen to, she is now dedicated to ensuring there is a last person this happens to. Catherine’s life ethos echoes the profound words of Dr. Maya Angelou: "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style."
Post-graduation, Catherine will shift her focus towards amplifying the impact of 'Why Do We Stay?', in order to support other survivors to become thrivers, while, of course, doing so with her fervent passion, sincere compassion, some witty humour, and some (mostly pink and leopard-print) style. My guest tonight is Gill Davidson , 57 years old and Yorkshire born and bred.
Her background is in mental health as a mental nurse ,having been qualified over 30 years.
As well as being a nurse she also works with men and women to support them to rebuild their confidence when life experiences have taken a toil on their self esteem.
My reason for doing this was because after finding myself in two abusive relationships one after the other many years ago my confidence was at an all time low.
Physical abuse , followed by emotional and psychological abuse affected my relationships with everyone, my family and especially my son.
Those days were dark , scary places where at one point I remember making a plan to end my life by hanging myself in my garage , I actually bought some rope.
We get out of those dark moments though don’t we because we know that’s not going to solve
anything.
There is life after being in an abusive relationship, and it’s a more fulfilled life, and you realise just how much you’re worth.

Let me introduce my next incredible podcast guest @hannah_louise_29 on 'Heal with the Reel' 7pm this evening on my YouTube channel (link in bio).
Firstly and most importantly, Hannah is a mother of three.
But she is also a survivor of domestic abuse.
She is one of the lucky ones, she got justice!!!
We know this is not the case for many victims, so her purpose now is to guide and help women find their inner strength to rebuild their lives, especially when justice is not served.
She wants to be able to provide emotional and holistic therapy for women who are unable to find or afford it, or even have the courage to seek it out.
There needs to be a huge shift in the way our country, and even the world deal with domestic abuse.
She is not going to be able to change the world, but she knows she will be able to give women the confidence to achieve happy and fulfilling lives after domestic abuse, and encourage them in their healing journey.
So many people are scared or ashamed to speak out…. She is not, Hannah is the voice for all of us, because she knows there is light at the end of the tunnel and she wants to help people get there.

My guest this week is the incredibly strong Laura Riley from Mums In Need.
After a happy and stable upbringing in France, in 2002 Laura moved to the UK to study for a degree, where she began a relationship with a man she thought was her soulmate.
However, when their romantic relationship broke down, her world was shattered as the man she loved, and the father of her child, completely changed almost overnight. After separating, her ex-partner began to treat Laura unfairly, and his behaviour soon escalated. He issued threats, was manipulative and financially abusive, became violent, and made co-parenting impossible. It soon became clear that Laura was the victim of a form of post-separation domestic abuse known as coercive control.
As the years passed, the abuse continued. Laura and her son moved to Sheffield to make a fresh start, but the threats, manipulation, coercion and control continued, resulting in numerous hearings in the family court. Throughout these traumatic times, Laura found it impossible to access suitable help, advice or support services. She knew that if she was finding it impossible to access support to help navigate her way through such a difficult and traumatic time, other women were no doubt feeling the same. This led her to set up Mums In Need from her kitchen table in 2014.
Since its humble beginnings almost a decade ago, Mums In Need has gone from strength to strength. MIN became a registered charity in 2018 and now employs a small team of staff, along with an army of committed Trustees and valued volunteers, who together offer a range of services including 1:1 Caseworker support, legal advice, wellbeing sessions, counselling, peer group support, and coffee mornings. MIN has successfully helped over 300 mums in Sheffield and the surrounding areas who’ve experienced post-separation abuse and coercive control to gain the skills and confidence to get their lives back on track.
As the CEO of Mums In Need and a survivor of post-separation abuse, Laura’s mission is to provide a range of help, advice, and support services to enable mums experiencing coercive control and post separation abuse to rebuild their lives. Additionally, she is determined to raise awareness of this invisible form of abuse, be a voice of change within society, and impact the push for policy changes and improvements within the family court system.

Madeleine Black has an unusual personal story which she uses to inspire and motivate others.
She chose to forgive the two men who gang raped her at thirteen years old and she shares her story for many reasons.
She wants to end the shame, stigma and silence surrounding sexual violence enabling others to find their voice, whatever their story is.
She wants people to know that it’s not what happens to us that is important but what we do
with it. She will show how changing her mindset tapped into her resilience and transformed her life, making people question their own thinking and encouraging them to see that there are always choices to make, and if we choose to, we can get past anything that happens to us in life both professionally and in our personal life.
She wants to encourage others to live their life courageously too; but ultimately she wants to inspire hope and show people that we are all so much stronger than we think we are.
The sharing of her story publicly on The Forgiveness Project’s website in September 2014, opened many doors for Madeleine in ways she never imagined, and the invitations started to pour in. Many women and men got in contact and explained how reading her story gave them strength, hope, and a different perspective of what’s possible in
their lives.
She has taken part in both TV and radio interviews and has been invited to share her story of being gang raped as a teenager at conferences, book events, schools etc.
She recognises that she was a victim of a crime that left her silent for many years but has now found her voice and intends to use it. Not just for her, but for so many who can’t find theirs yet.
In March 2018 she won the Amazing Strength award at the No. 1 Magazine Amazing Women Awards and in October
of the same year was asked to be the Patron for Say Women, a Scottish organisation which offers safe accommodation and support to young women who are survivors of sexual abuse/rape and who are homeless.
She is one of 50 Thrivers taking part in research by The Global Resilience Project to develop a resilience blueprint for others.
She is a two times TEDx speaker, a story teller for The Forgiveness Project and has recently become involved with their programme RESTORE, sharing her story in prisons. In June 2020, she was asked to be Patron for Justice.
Is Now, an organistaion that campaigns to end the use of rape myths and victim blaming in the criminal justice system.
In November 2020 she started her own podcast show called “Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling” And in December 2020 she was asked to be an Ambassador for Freedom From Abuse.
She is a psychotherapist and her memoir, Unbroken, was published on April 4th 2017

Alice is a writer, teacher, mother, survivor of domestic abuse and - above all - an optimist.
During 8 years’ of arduous recovery from serious economic and domestic abuse, she toured 4 successful stage
shows about her experiences and PTSD (2015/7.))
As an English teacher of 20 years and a mother of two sons, Alice decided not to give up just yet and formed Goddess Education (2015) to bring awareness to domestic abuse and survivor mental health.
This included being asked to comment on the draft Domestic Abuse Bill (2019.)
She was widely involved in activism in this angry period, using her writing
and performance to highlight some uncomfortable truths.
She performed her work at Edinburgh
Fringe, WAVE Berlin and the Women’s Economic Forum in India (2016) to rather shocked audiences then ran away to the sea to write.
In lockdown, Alice founded 361 Life Support with a group of survivors and created 361 Recovery programme for women survivors which won the 2020 MARSH award for Innovative peer support.
She is 6 years’ sober and co hosted a successful 361 Sober programme for LGBTQ+ community for over 2
years.
Alice writes, speaks and performs her work regularly and coaches women to find out the answer the following question - victim, survivor, what lies beyond?
She now sits on the Crown Prosecution Service scrutiny panel to review cases involving violence against women and girls.
In 2023 she published the 361 Recovery 12 week programme and has created 5 series of the 361 Life Support podcast which includes free access to the 361 programme plus advice from survivors on narcissistic abuse, gaslighting and journalling for mental health.

Alison Lowe OBE is the Deputy Mayor for Police and Crime in West Yorkshire.
She started her role in July 2021 and was appointed by the new Metro Mayor, Tracy Brabin, because of her extensive voluntary sector, political and policing experience over a 30+ year period.
Alison worked in the Third Sector for more than 30 years, most recently as Chief Executive of Touchstone, a Mental Health Charity working across West Yorkshire.
@touchstonesupport work with and for people that are affected by mental health problems,and they specialise in working with people from different cultural backgrounds.
Touchstone have received multiple awards for their work in inclusion and diversity.
Alison has been involved in local government for 29 years and was a councillor with the Labour Party.
Alison was also the Chair of the Police and Crime Panel, the body that scrutinises the performance of the Police and Crime Commissioner and
represents the interests of all the 2.3 million people across West Yorkshire.
Alison was the Deputy Lord Mayor of Leeds in 2003-4 and was made an Honorary Alderwoman of the city in 2020. In this role, Alison was asked to review Leeds statues following the BLM protests.
Alison is a Non-Executive Director with Leeds Community Health NHS Trust.
Over the years, Alison has been a well-known campaigner on equal rights and chaired the Leeds Domestic Violence Forum that raises awareness of domestic violence against women and children by known men for over 25 years.
Alison Lowe holds an MA in Medieval Studies from Leeds University and a BA in History and was given an Honorary Doctor of Laws in 2022.
She was also awarded an OBE in the January 2022 Queen’s Honours List.
Alison has 2 grown up children,
Adam and Rosy and grandchildren Mae and Oscar.
