Robin Farmanfarmaian, Author and Professional Speaker just released a new book called “How AI Can Democratize Healthcare." (Side Note: You can get a free chapter download at democratizinghealthcare.ai)  If you've been to a health IT conference, then you've probably heard Farmanfarmaian speak.  In those talks, she shares more healthcare innovation per minute than any other speaker I've seen.  So, I was excited to hear she'd put out a book about AI in healthcare.  

To get a preview, I sat down with Farmanfarmaian to hear an overview of what her and her co-author Michael Ferro share in the book.  Plus, I ask her to share a number of specific examples of AI really happening in healthcare and I ask her who is going to pay for all this AI.

Maple is a Canadian Healthcare success story. Founded in 2015, the company has grown steadily and is now Canada’s largest online network of doctors. They offer both virtual care services as well as a virtual care platform. They experience the meteoric rise in usage during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent decline, but unlike other telehealth providers, they expected this and planned for it. The company expects to continue growing in the years ahead.

It's one thing to talk about interoperability in healthcare and it's another to talk about where sharing of health data is really happening.  That's the discussion I had with Anil Jain, MD, Chief Innovation Officer at Innovaccer, when I asked him where we're at when it comes to healthcare interoperability.  In this video interview, Dr. Jain shares where healthcare organizations are really asking him to help with interoperability.  He shares some of the practical areas that interoperability is really happening today.

One of the people who's had a front row seat to some of the major happenings in health IT is Zane Burke.  Most of us got to know Burke during his two decades at Cerner Corporation (now Oracle Cerner) where he eventually became President.  Then, Burke was CEO of Livongo Health before it was eventually acquired by Teladoc.  Burke is now CEO at Quantum Health.  Given everything that has happened with Cerner and Teladoc since his departure, we wanted to get his insights and perspectives on what's happening with those two companies and also why he chose to work on Care Navigation at Quantum Health as his next act.

While many would like to eschew fax in healthcare, the reality is that faxes are still an extremely important part of data sharing that happens in healthcare.  At least in the current environment, if you want to solve the healthcare interoperability problem, you’re going to have to include some faxing.  

This was the reality that Therasa Bell, Cofounder, President & CTO at Kno2, found as her team and her worked to make communication of health data seamless for their end users.   Rather than building out the fax infrastructure themselves, Kno2 decided to integrate eFax Corporate by Consensus Cloud Solutions directly into the Kno2 product.  

I was able to sit down with Bell from Kno2 and John Mannion, VP of Partnerships and Alliances at Consensus Cloud Solutions, to learn more about this decision and about the fax integration.  Along with diving into the partnership, Mannion shared more about why health IT companies are choosing to integrate faxing into their products and what it really takes to build a robust digital fax infrastructure (Spoiler Alert: It’s much harder than you’d think).

All around the globe, healthcare systems are beginning to strain and fray as physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals leave their positions or scale back their hours. There is no silver bullet. Restoring our health systems and re-energizing staff is going to require change and improvement on many fronts. Technology can help, but only if it reduces the administrative burden. Dr. Katharine Smart, President of the Canadian Medical Association believes interoperability is key to reducing physician burnout.
