HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 12

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 12 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by an eight-stringed instrument.[a]

1 Help, O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth!2 Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts.3 May the Lord cut off their flattering lips and silence their boastful tongues.4 They say, “We will lie to our hearts’ content. Our lips are our own—who can stop us?”

Explain – The Author, the Psalmist David, said that the godly were fast disappearing.  Neighbors were lying to each other with deceitful hearts believing that no one can stop them.

Apply – This sounds like a description of society today.  Christians are not respected, and there are many false Christians that are indeed lying with deceitful tongues. Now is time to measure ourselves with the Lord to remove any deceitful habits, to renew our commitment to abide with Him and in Him.

Psalm 101:7 ESV No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.

Proverbs 6:16-19 ESV There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

Psalm 120:2 ESV Deliver me, O Lord, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.

2 Timothy 3:12-15 ESV Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 11

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 11 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

4 But the Lord is in his holy Temple; the Lord still rules from heaven.
He watches everyone closely, examining every person on earth.
5 The Lord examines both the righteous and the wicked. He hates those who love violence.6 He will rain down blazing coals and burning sulfur on the wicked, punishing them with scorching winds.7 For the righteous Lord loves justice. The virtuous will see his face.

Explain – The Author, the Psalmist David, said that his protection came from the Lord.  He said that God watches everyone, examining every person, the righteous and unrighteous.  He will judge all.

Apply – We should seek the Lord, abide in Him as He abides in us.  He will keep us and sustain us through eternity.  Those that reject Him will be doomed.

John 3:36 ESV Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Ephesians 5:6 ESV Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

John 15:5-8 ESV 5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. 7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! 8 When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.

Romans 5:9 ESV Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for this living picture of our blessed and joyful life in and with You.  Help me discern and avoid anyone or anything that would tempt me away from Your presence.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 10

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 10 New Living Translation

1 O Lord, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I am in trouble?2 The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor. Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others.3 For they brag about their evil desires; they praise the greedy and curse the Lord.

4 The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead.5 Yet they succeed in everything they do. They do not see your punishment awaiting them.
    They sneer at all their enemies. 

6 They think, “Nothing bad will ever happen to us! We will be free of trouble forever!”

Explain – The Author, the Psalmist, says that the wicked perform evil acts oblivious to God’s presence.  They even brag about their evil desires and curse the Lord.  They seem too proud to seek God thinking God dead.  They seem to succeed in everything they do ignoring their certain destiny.

Apply –  We must understand that there is certain judgement and there is no hiding from God, He sees all, knows what we think, say and do.

Proverbs 15:3 ESV The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

Hebrews 4:13 ESV And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

2 Peter 3:9 ESV The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Acts 2:38 ESV And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for Your Truth, Your provision for sinners.  I thank You for my salvation and ask that You help me to be an effective soldier in Your army to bring the Truth to the lost, in Jesus name, Amen.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 9

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 9 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be sung to the tune “Death of the Son.”

1 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done.2 I will be filled with joy because of you. I will sing praises to your name, O Most High.

3 My enemies retreated; they staggered and died when you appeared.4 For you have judged in my favor; from your throne you have judged with fairness.5 You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; you have erased their names forever.6 The enemy is finished, in endless ruins; the cities you uprooted are now forgotten.

7 But the Lord reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne.8 He will judge the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness.9 The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.10 Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you.

Explain – The Author, David, says that he would praise God and tell about all the marvelous things He had done.  He knew that he would be filled with the joy of the Lord despite any circumstance.  He says that God will rule and judge the world. He will bless those that search for Him and trust in Him, but those that reject Him will face certain judgement.

Apply – We should seek Him continuously, abide in Him and faithfully and obediently follow Him forever.  We should not hesitate to tell others of the marvelous things He has done in our lives.  Though our active relationship with Him we can receive the fruit of the Spirit that can only come from Him.

Galatians 5 New Living Translation 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for Your holy Word, Your Truth, and the life full of the fruit of the Spirit that can only come from You.

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 8:1-9 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by a stringed instrument.[a]

1 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
    Your glory is higher than the heavens.
2 You have taught children and infants
    to tell of your strength,[b] silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.

3 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
    the moon and the stars you set in place—
4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
    human beings that you should care for them?[c]5 Yet you made them only a little lower than God[d]
    and crowned them[e] with glory and honor.6 You gave them charge of everything you made,
    putting all things under their authority—
7 the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals,8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.

9 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!

Explain – The Author, David, is the Psalmist, says that the Lord’s name is majestic and fills the entire earth.  He created all things, yet loves and cares for we humans, mere mortals that He created.

Apply – We too, like David, should take time to praise the Lord for all He is, all He has done, and His amazing love and grace that saved wretches like us.

Respond – Lord, I praise You and honor You for all You are, all You do, and for Your unfailing love for a wretch like me.

10 God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right.
11 God is an honest judge. He is angry with the wicked every day.

Explain – The Author, David, said that God was his shield, who always saved those whose hearts were right.  God is an honest judge that will rule rightly when the time comes.

Apply – We should strive to be like David, to rely on God to be our shield knowing that our faithful and obedient lives in Him will support His love, protection, and provision for us.

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for Your love, protection, and provision.  I strive to abide in You every moment of every day.  Help me, Lord.  Amen.

1 O Lord, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage.
2 Have compassion on me, Lord, for I am weak.
    Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony.
3 I am sick at heart.
    How long, O Lord, until you restore me?

…8 Go away, all you who do evil,
    for the Lord has heard my weeping.
9 The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will answer my prayer.
10 May all my enemies be disgraced and terrified.
    May they suddenly turn back in shame.

Explain – The Author, David, was crying out to the Lord in his misery.  He does have confidence to know that the Lord has heard his plea and he has faith that the Lord will answer his prayer.

Apply – We too should not hesitate in brining our needs to Jesus with faith knowing that He hears and answers all prayer in His time.

Respond – Lord, thank You for hearing and answering my prayers.  I pray that my mind is renewed daily to focus on the things You would have me to focus on; and not be distracted by things that are not for me to be concerned with.

7 Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; 

I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.8 Lead me in the right path, O Lord,
    or my enemies will conquer me.
Make your way plain for me to follow.

…11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them sing joyful praises forever.
Spread your protection over them,
    that all who love your name may be filled with joy.
12 For you bless the godly, O Lord;
    you surround them with your shield of love.

Explain – The Author, David, says that he could worship God with deepest awe because of His unfailing love.  He prayed for God to lead him on the right path to avoid his enemies, to make His way plain for David to follow.  He says that all that would take refuge in the Lord should rejoice because He would spread His protection over them with a shield of love.

Apply – We should strive to seek the Lord’s path for our lives, to worship Him in the awe of His amazing love for us.  We should rely on His protection and rejoice because He will never fail us.

Respond – Lord, thank You for all You are and all You do.  I seek Your path for my life and rely on Your protection and provision.  Thank You Lord!

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 4 New Living Translation

4 Don’t sin by letting anger control you.
    Think about it overnight and remain silent. 

Interlude5 Offer sacrifices in the right spirit, and trust the Lord.

Explain – The Author, David, says not to sin by letting anger control you.  Think about the issue overnight and remain silent.  Offer sacrifices in the right spirit and trust the Lord.

There was a time in my life that I did let my anger control me.  I would lose my temper and break things while in a rage.  I believed at the time that it was the way I was.  I would explain my behavior as, “I am what I am”.

But, then I learned that God never made me to be out of control, that was a lie.  I learned that if I would abide in Him as He abides in me, the Holy Spirit would control me to become at peace with my self and others.

Apply – We should repent of our failed attempts to live life on our own.  We should reaffirm our life to Christ, take up our cross daily and walk faithfully and obediently in Him.  We will live a full life full of spiritual fruit found in Galatians 

Galatians 5:22-23 New Living Translation 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Whenever these things are absent, run to Him and repent and He will restore you!  Be Spirit Controlled and be set free!

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your Truth, the life I have in You.  Thank You Lord from saving me from myself!

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 3 New Living Translation

A psalm of David, regarding the time David fled from his son Absalom.

1 O Lord, I have so many enemies; so many are against me.2 So many are saying, “God will never rescue him!” 

Interlude[a]

3 But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; 

you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.4 I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain. 

Interlude

5 I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety,
    for the Lord was watching over me.6 I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side.

Explain – The Author, David, when fleeing from his son, Absalom, cried out to the Lord for protection from a multitude of enemies and was spared.

Apply – We too should depend on the Lord for our protection at all times, not just in the time of trouble.  We will find that He will sustain us just as he did David, the Apostle Paul, and others that relied on Him.

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for Your Word, Your protection, Your provision.  I seek to rely on You each and every day.
