HEAR Journaling - Psalms Chapter 22

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 22: New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be sung to the tune “Doe of the Dawn.”

1 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? 

    Why are you so far away when I groan for help?2 Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer.
    Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.

3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.4 Our ancestors trusted in you, and you rescued them.5 They cried out to you and were saved.
    They trusted in you and were never disgraced.

Explain – The Author, David the Psalmist, was at a low point in his struggle.  He asked God why he was abandoned.  He was confused why there was no response from God when David prayed.  He recalls that God did come through for Israel, and had he thought about it, he would have remembered that God was with him when he fought bears, lions, Goliath, and armies.  Silence is a message.

Apply – We must learn that God does sometimes use silence to get our attention.  Perhaps we have been inattentive to our relationship with Him, we may experience silence when we seek Him.  Perhaps we have been disobedient to something the Lord impressed us to do, and He responds with silence to get our attention.  Sometimes, it is just His way to get us to seek Him with all the more fervor. May we not cease our efforts to seek Him.  Just ask Him why am I not hearing You Lord?  Then wait and listen attentively, watch for signs, be comforted knowing that He is always there.

Isaiah 40:31 ESV But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Psalm 27:13-14 ESV I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

James 5:11 ESV Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your attention on me and my house, and all my generations.  I strive to seek You and follow You faithfully and obediently.  I am joyful when I hear Your voice, and will strive to seek You in the time of silent for I know Your silence is for a reason.  Praise You Lord.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling - Psalms Chapter 21

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 21:7 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

7 For the king trusts in the Lord. The unfailing love of the Most High will keep him from stumbling.

Explain – The Author, David the Psalmist, said the king trusts in the Lord, David being the king.  The unfailing love of the Most High God will keep him from stumbling.  Yet we know that he did lust for Bathsheba, did commit adultery, and sent her husband to certain death (2 Samuel Chapter 11) .  Why didn’t God keep him from stumbling?  David fell from grace because he took his eyes off the Lord.

Apply – We must learn to be faithful and obedient followers of the Lord at all times, in what we think, say, and do.  The enemy and our own sin nature will tempt us into sin which will separate us from God.  Remain with Him and be sheltered.

1 Peter 1:14 ESV As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,

John 14:23 ESV Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

1 John 3:24 ESV Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

James 1:22 ESV But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

John 14:21 ESV Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

Respond – Lord, thank You for my salvation.  I diligently strive to follow You faithfully and obediently, always forever.  Help me Lord not to wander off Your path.  I pray for those that do not know You that they will seek and find You.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 20

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 20:1-3 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

1 In times of trouble, may the Lord answer your cry.
    May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm.
2 May he send you help from his sanctuary and strengthen you from Jerusalem.[a]3 May he remember all your gifts and look favorably on your burnt offerings.

Explain – The Author, David the Psalmist, said that in times of trouble may the Lord hear your cry.  May the Lord keep you safe from harm. May He send help from His sanctuary, may He remember Your gifts and look favorably on you.

Apply – We must live faithful obedient lives, then God will be able to bless us and protect us.

Exodus 23:22 ESV “But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

1 John 5:3 ESV For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

Isaiah 1:19 ESV  If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;

Luke 11:28 ESV But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 19

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 19:12-14 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

12 How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults.13 Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt    and innocent of great sin.

14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Explain – The Author, the Psalmist David, asked how he could know the hidden sins in his own heart.  He prayed to God to cleanse him from the hidden faults.  He prayed for God to keep him from deliberate sin, not to be controlled by sin.  He prayed that his thoughts would be pleasing to God, his rock and redeemer.

Apply – We too have hidden sins that God can help us identify, repent, and avoid in the future.  The Holy Spirit will lead us unto all Truth, He will not lead us to sin.  Let us also meditate on Him, abide in Him and with Him through eternity.

Isaiah 59:2 ESV But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.

Proverbs 28:13 ESV Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

Romans 8:5 ESV For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 12:2 ESV Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Galatians 5:16-18 ESV But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Respond – Lord, help me identify any hidden sins.  Help me to repent and avoid them in the future.  Holy Spirit, please lead me unto all Truth, I know You will not lead me to sin.  I strive to meditate on You, abide in You and with You through eternity.  I pray for those that do not know You, may they be drawn to You today. Amen.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 18

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 1 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David, the servant of the Lord. He sang this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. He sang:

46 The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock! May the God of my salvation be exalted!47 He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he subdues the nations under me48     and rescues me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies;
    you save me from violent opponents.
49 For this, O Lord, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name.50 You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.

Explain – The Author, the Psalmist David, sang this song to the Lord on the day that he was rescued from King Saul.  He stood firm in his faith and trust in the Lord despite his often-perilous situations. 

Apply – We should learn to stand firm in our faith and trust in the Lord despite any circumstances knowing that He is with us and will shield us forever.

2 Samuel 22:3 ESV My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.

Matthew 28:20 ESV Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Joshua 1:9 ESV Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for this awesome relationship that I share with You.  Thank You for Your provision for me and my house and all my generations.  I pray for those that are wandering through life without a relationship with You, may they seek and find You today.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 17

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 17:3-5 New Living Translation

A prayer of David.

3 You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night.  You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong.  I am determined not to sin in what I say.4 I have followed your commands, which keep me from following cruel and evil people.5 My steps have stayed on your path; I have not wavered from following you.

Explain – The Author, the Psalmist David, said that God had tested his thoughts and examined his heart and found nothing wrong.  David said that he was determined not to sin.  He strived to follow God’s commands and stayed on His path.

Apply –  Yes, as long as David was faithful with God, God did protect him and guided his ways.  We know that David did stray from God’s path when he sinned starting with lust for Bathsheba and even escalating to murder of Bathsheba’s husband.  

Adam and Eve committed the first sin when they took their attention from God, and focused on the temptation presented them.

We should learn that it is never wise to stray from God, we must be vigilant, to follow the Lord consistently and continuously through eternity.

Joshua 1:9 ESV Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

2 Timothy 1:7 ESV For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 16

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 16 New Living Translation

A psalm[a] of David.

7 I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me.8 I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.[b]  My body rests in safety.10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead[c] or allow your holy one[d] to rot in the grave.11 You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.[e]

Explain – David, the psalmist, said that he would bless the Lord who provided him guidance, instruction, direction, safety, joy, peace forever.

Apply – We too can experience the joy and peace in the Lord when we follow Him faithfully and obediently just as David did.  We must be steadfast and tenacious to not fall away.

Psalm 16:11 ESV You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Romans 15:13 ESV May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Romans 12:12 ESV Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

1 Peter 1:8-9 ESV Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

John 14:27 ESV Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

John 16:24 ESV Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for Your love, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction to grow me to be all that I can be in You.  I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently with the joy and peace that only You can provide.  I pray for those that do not know You fully, Lord.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 15

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 15 New Living Translation

A psalm of David.

1 Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?2 Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.3 Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends.4 Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts.5 Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever.

Explain – The Psalmist, David, described those that can truly worship in God’s sanctuary, who may enter God’s presence.  Those who lead blameless lives with sincere hearts can.

Apply – We can learn that to truly worship God with a clean heart we must submit our will over to His will, abiding in Him as He abides in us.

Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Luke 9:23 ESV And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Hebrews 11:6 ESV And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Romans 12:1 ESV I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

John 15:7 ESV If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Matthew 24:13 ESV But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for the living abundant life I have in You.  Help me Lord to fully submit my will to You daily, to follow You faithfully and obediently, consistently and continually forever.  I pray for those that do not truly know You Lord, help me to be an effective servant to share Your Truth.  Amen,

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 14

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 14 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

1 Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!

2 The Lord looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God.
3 But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt.[a]  No one does good, not a single one!

Explain – The Author, the Psalmist David, said that fools say in their heart that there is no God.  They are corrupt and evil.  God looked down and saw no one worthy, no one wise.  All had turned away.

Apply – We are a lost people without our savior Jesus Christ.  There is indeed no one worthy, no not one in their own power.  Paul quotes these words in Romans chapter 3, “None is righteous, no, not one…”  Through Jesus we are made clean

Ephesians 2:8 ESV For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Psalm 103:12 ESV 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

Acts 4:12 ESV And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Romans 6:23 ESV For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for this free gift of grace, forgiveness, my salvation. I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently.  I pray for those that do not know you yet, Lord.  Help me effectively share Your Gospel, in Jesus Name, Amen.

HEAR Journaling -  Psalms Chapter 13

Highlight – Psalms Chapter 13 New Living Translation

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

1 O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way?2 How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day?
    How long will my enemy have the upper hand?

3 Turn and answer me, O Lord my God! Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die.4 Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying, “We have defeated him!” Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall.

5 But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me.6 I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.

Explain – The Author, the Psalmist David, cried out to God asking how ling He would forget David.  He wondered how long he needed to struggle and his enemy have the upper hand. He said that he would trust in the Lord’s unfailing love because God had rescued him before.  He pledged to sing to the Lord because He was good to David.

Apply – We should know that God’s ways are not our ways.  He loves those that follow Him faithfully and obediently.  We must put our full faith and trust in our Lord Jesus Christ who will be with us through eternity.
