HEAR Journaling - Psalms Chapter 23
Highlight – Psalms Chapter 23:1-6 New Living Translation
The Lord the Shepherd of His People A Psalm of David
23 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not [a]want.2 He makes me to lie down in [b]green pastures;
He leads me beside the [c]still waters.3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will [d]dwell in the house of the Lord
[e]Forever.
Explain – This is a very famous and popular Psalm for good reason. There are books, teaching series, even films based on the 23rd Psalm. For this HEAR Journal I will focus on verse 2, “He makes me to lie down in green pastures.
I have witnessed many people being forced to lie down and rest and think upon the Lord. I myself have experienced this. I had a severe pneumonia which hospitalized me for three weeks in 2017. This experience forced me to stop all activity and focus on Him as I was healing.
I got much more serious about my relationship with the Lord, and have been blessed beyond measure.
Apply – We all must come to the place that we get our thoughts off of ourselves and focus on the Lord. When we do so we can experience Him every moment of every day. When we do His goodness and mercy will indeed follow us the rest of our lives.
Galatians 2:20 ESV I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
John 15:4 ESV Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
1 John 3:24 ESV Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
John 15:16 ESV You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
Galatians 5:22-23 ESV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
John 8:31-32 ESV So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Respond – Lord, thank You for my life in You and with You. I strive to seek You, Lord, to abide in You and with You. I pray for anyone that does not know You Lord. I pray that You will draw them in today, that they will accept You as savior. Amen.
