HEAR Journaling - Genesis 20
Highlight – Genesis 20:1-7 New Living Translation
Abraham Deceives Abimelech
20 Abraham moved south to the Negev and lived for a while between Kadesh and Shur, and then he moved on to Gerar. While living there as a foreigner, 2 Abraham introduced his wife, Sarah, by saying, “She is my sister.” So King Abimelech of Gerar sent for Sarah and had her brought to him at his palace. 3 But that night God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are a dead man, for that woman you have taken is already married!” 4 But Abimelech had not slept with her yet, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? 5 Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘Yes, he is my brother.’ I acted in complete innocence! My hands are clean.” 6 In the dream God responded, “Yes, I know you are innocent. That’s why I kept you from sinning against me, and why I did not let you touch her. 7 Now return the woman to her husband, and he will pray for you, for he is a prophet. Then you will live. But if you don’t return her to him, you can be sure that you and all your people will die.”
Explain – Abraham’s wife Sarah must have been a very beautiful woman. Abraham feared that Abimelech would kill him to have his wife Sarah, so he conspired with Sarah to agree that he would introduce her as his sister. God, of course, was fully aware of everything that was going on and came in a dream to Abimelech so that he would not have sexual relations with Sarah. God’s instructions were such that Abimelech would not punish Abraham for his lies, and Abimelech’s people were spared any retribution from God.
Apply – We can learn that we should avoid reasoning with our own mind alone, but to rely on the Lord who’s indwelling Holy Spirit will lead us unto all Truth. Abraham’s lies could have had a severe impact on Abimelech’s people, as the lies that we tell have greater impact than we can know. God’s ways are the best ways, no sin is worth the impact that it may bring.
Romans 6:23 ESV For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Galatians 6:7-8 ESV Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
Proverbs 14:12 ESV There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
James 4:17 ESV So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
Isaiah 59:2 ESV But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
1 John 1:9 ESV
Respond- Lord, thank You for You never wavering faithfulness. Thank You for listening to the effective prayers of the righteous. Help me Lord to hear you clearly and obediently follow You through eternity. I pray for those that are ignoring Your warnings, that they will repent and follow You. Amen.

HEAR Journaling - Genesis 19
Highlight – Genesis 19:14-16, 23-29 New Living Translation
Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
14 So Lot rushed out to tell his daughters’ fiancés, “Quick, get out of the city! The Lord is about to destroy it.” But the young men thought he was only joking.
15 At dawn the next morning the angels became insistent. “Hurry,” they said to Lot. “Take your wife and your two daughters who are here. Get out right now, or you will be swept away in the destruction of the city!”
16 When Lot still hesitated, the angels seized his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and rushed them to safety outside the city, for the Lord was merciful.
…
23 Lot reached the village just as the sun was rising over the horizon. 24 Then the Lord rained down fire and burning sulfur from the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah. 25 He utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain, wiping out all the people and every bit of vegetation. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back as she was following behind him, and she turned into a pillar of salt.
27 Abraham got up early that morning and hurried out to the place where he had stood in the Lord’s presence.28 He looked out across the plain toward Sodom and Gomorrah and watched as columns of smoke rose from the cities like smoke from a furnace.
29 But God had listened to Abraham’s request and kept Lot safe, removing him from the disaster that engulfed the cities on the plain.
Explain – Abraham prayed asking God to spare his cousin Lot and his family from destruction. God sent angels to warn Lot and ensure that Lot and his family were safe, however there were some people that did not heed the warnings:
1) Lot’s daughters fiancés ignored the warnings and perished
2) Lot himself hesitated so the angels compelled him and his wife and daughters to flee
3) Lot’s wife disobeyed the warning not to look back and she perished.
Through it all God was merciful and saved Lot and his daughters from certain destruction because of Abraham’s faithful prayer.
Apply – There is much to learn and apply in this story.
1) God’s patience with sinful lawless people is not limitless, He will bring ultimate justice.
2) When God sends a warning we need to listen and obey without hesitation.
3) The effective prayer of a righteous person can accomplish much!
4) God protects His people in the midst of confusion and calamity.
Respond- Lord, thank You for You never wavering faithfulness. Thank You for listening to the effective prayers of the righteous. Help me Lord to hear you clearly and obediently follow You through eternity. I pray for those that are ignoring Your warnings, that they will repent and follow You. Amen.

HEAR Journaling Genesis 18
Highlight – Genesis 18:10-15 New Living Translation
10 Then one of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!” Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent. 11 Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children. 12 So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?” 13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” 15 Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh.” But the Lord said, “No, you did laugh.”
Explain – The three “men” (reference v 2) were apparently angels, or at least men of God bringing a divine message to Abraham and Sarah that Sarah will have a child in one year. Abraham was 99 years old and Sarah was 89. Sarah overheard the conversation between Abraham and the men and she laughed at the message. The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh?” Sarah denied that she had laughed, but God knew that she had.
Apply – God is ever faithful. He will always fulfil His promises. Perhaps not on the timetable that we may want or ever the way we might expect. Sarah had evidently lost hope that she could possibly have a child in her late 80s, but God was going to show her as well as the rest of us that God can indeed do anything. This is a great lesson for us to be faithful and obedient, to strive to abide in and with the Lord consistently and continuously. We must patiently wait of the Lord and follow His will with faith that He does keep His promises.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Hebrews 10:23 ESV Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Deuteronomy 7:9 ESV Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
Respond- Thank You Lord for Your faithfulness. I trust and honor You Lord. I strive to abide in You as You abide in me, following obediently and faithfully. I pray for those that do not know You as savior. Show them, Lord, in a way that they cannot deny. Amen.

HEAR Journaling - Genesis 17
Highlight – Genesis 17:1-8 New Living Translation
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. 2 I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.” 3 At this, Abram fell face down on the ground. Then God said to him, 4 “This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations! 5 What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham,[a] for you will be the father of many nations. 6 I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them! 7 “I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants[b] after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.”
Explain – God confirms His covenant with Abram, renaming him Abraham, and promising that all his descendants from generation to generation will be God’s people and will dwell in the land of Canaan.
Apply – God’s covenant, His promise to Abraham is extended to all believers in Jesus Christ as we are all grafted in to Abraham’s family, the family of God. We will all dwell with God in the New Jerusalem which will be in the land of Canaan.
Galatians 3:29 ESV And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.
Acts 2:39 ESV For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Ephesians 2:11-13 ESV Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
Revelation 21:2 ESV And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Isaiah 65:17 ESV “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.
Revelation 22:14 ESV Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.
Respond- Thank You Lord for Your faithful promises. Thank You for including me with Your bride, the body of Christ. I look forward to the day that I will leave this sinful world to dwell with You and other faithful followers through eternity. I pray for those that do not know You, that they will yield to Your unction and become faithful and obedient followers too, Amen.

HEAR Journaling - Genesis 16
Highlight – Genesis 16:15-16 New Living Translation
15 So Hagar gave Abram a son, and Abram named him Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Ishmael was born.
Explain – Genesis Chapter 6 recounts that Abram and Sari could not see how God would fulfill His promise of a child from their union, so they conspired to have a child through Hagar, that would become Ishmael. Abram was 86 years old. Isaac would be born when Abram was 100 years old, and Sari would be 90.
Apply – God is ever faithful. He will always fulfil His promises. Perhaps not on the timetable that we may want or ever the way we might expect. This is a great lesson for us to be faithful and obedient, to strive to abide in and with the Lord consistently and continuously. We must patiently wait of the Lord and follow His will, not try to accomplish God’s will in our own power and reasoning.
Proverbs 3:5-8 ESV 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your flesh[b] and refreshment[c] to your bones.
Isaiah 40:31 ESV 1 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
1 John 1:9 ESV 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

HEAR Journaling - Genesis 15
Highlight – Genesis 15:12-16 New Living Translation
12 As the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a terrifying darkness came down over him. 13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, where they will be oppressed as slaves for 400 years. 14 But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and in the end they will come away with great wealth. 15 (As for you, you will die in peace and be buried at a ripe old age.) 16 After four generations your descendants will return here to this land, for the sins of the Amorites do not yet warrant their destruction.”
Explain – God explains to Abraham that his descendants will make a great nation, that they will be slaves for 400 years in Egypt, which of course does come to pass. Remember at this point, Abram, who will become Abraham, had not had Isaac as yet. He was approaching 100 years of age, but with God all things are possible.
Apply - This biblical prophecy of Israel being enslaved for 400 years in Egypt did come to pass. We can have utmost confidence in God and His Living Word, the Bible. There are prophesies about upcoming times of tribulation and turmoil that are coming to fruition right before our eyes. Have no fear, because the Word of God, the Bible, tells us about our redemption from our enslavement to this sinful word. We are saved and will live with the Lord for eternity.
Hebrews 11:16 ESV But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
Isaiah 65:17-19 ESV “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress.
Isaiah 65:25 ESV The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.
1 Corinthians 2:9 ESV But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—
John 3:16 ESV “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Psalm 16:11 ESV You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Daniel 12:2 ESV
Revelation 2:7 ESV
Respond- Thank You Lord for Your faithful promises. I look forward to the day that I will leave this sinful world to dwell with You and other faithful followers through eternity. I pray for those that do not know You, that they will yield to Your unction and become faithful and obedient followers too, Amen.

HEAR Journaling - Genesis 14
Highlight - Genesis 14:17-20 New Living Translation
Melchizedek Blesses Abram
Explain – Melchizedek is a most interesting person of the Bible. Here’s 10 intriguing facts about Melchizedek from the Bible:
1. Only three books of the Bible mention Melchizedek – (Genesis, Psalms, and Hebrews)
2. The New Testament says more about Melchizedek than the Old Testament - Just to give some perspective, Melchizedek’s name is mentioned 10 times in the Bible: once in Genesis (Gn 14:18), once in Psalms (Ps 110:4), and the rest are in Hebrews.
3. Melchizedek is a contemporary of Abraham’s – Abraham met Melchizedek in Genesis chapter 14.
4. Melchizedek has no recorded family - The author of Hebrews makes a pretty big deal out of this. He contrasts the lineage-based priesthood of Aaron with Melchizedek, who has no recorded birth or death or anything (He 7:3, 8).
5. Melchizedek was a priest of God Most High - (Genesis 14:18).
6. Melchizedek gives blessings (or at least one) - (Genesis 14:19–20)
7. Melchizedek is the king of Salem - The author of Hebrews calls attention to this when likening Melchizedek to Jesus—Melchizedek was the king of “Peace,” which makes us think of another Prince of Peace we know (He 7:2).
8. Melchizedek’s name means “king of righteousness” - The author of Hebrews brings this up in his argument for Christ’s greatness (He 7:2). The name comes from two Hebrew words: malak (king, ruler) and sadaq (righteous, just, innocent). It’s a pretty cool name.
9. The order of Melchizedek is royal and everlasting – (Psalms 110:4)
10. Melchizedek was greater than Abraham and Aaron -
See more at https://overviewbible.com/melchizedek-facts/
Apply – There is much not known about Melchizedek, much speculation. The fact is that Abraham recognized Melchizedek as a holy priest of God and honored him as such. The Lord will lead us to people that are holy servants of the Lord for our benefit. These people can teach us much and strengthen our faith in the Lord. Let us seek the Lord to make these relationships clear so that we may profit from knowing them. We additionally need to follow the Lord as He may bring us into the lives of others for mutual edification.

Respond - Lord, thank You for my life, for my salvation. Thank You for the awesome people that You have brought into my life, leaders, mentors, and friends in You. Thank You for giving me the opportunities to share Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction with others. Thank You for the opportunities to learn and grow from wisdom shared by others. Explain – The Lord promised the land of Canaan as a permanent possession for Abram’s descendants, a free gift of God.
Apply – This is the promised land, the land of Canaan, promised by God for all of Abram, who will be known as Abraham. We as believer’s in Jesus Christ are also partakers in the promise, the New Jerusalem will rest on this land where we will dwell with God through eternity.
Daniel 7:27 ESV And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’

Revelation 21:23-25 ESV And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.
James 1:12 ESV Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Respond - Lord, thank You for my life, for my salvation. I look forward to living with You and others in the New Jerusalem forever. Until then I seek to abide in You as You abide in me following You faithfully and obediently. Show me Your way Lord. I pray for those that do not know You, that they come to You, in Jesus name. Amen.

HEAR Journaling - Genesis 12
Highlight - Genesis 12:1-6 New Living Translation
1The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. 5 He took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth—his livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran—and headed for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in Canaan, 6 Abram traveled through the land as far as Shechem. There he set up camp beside the oak of Moreh. At that time, the area was inhabited by Canaanites.
Explain – The Lord directed Abram to leave his native country, to take everything he owned to a land that God would show him. Abram did as the Lord instructed even though he was seventy-five years old.
Apply – Can you imagine if God had called you at seventy-five years old to pack up everything and move to a land, a place you do not know, but to follow the Lord’s direction completely? Would we be as faithful and obedient as Abram? Think now, what has the Lord asked you to do? Do you know, do you remember? Perhaps it is time to seek the Lord again and ask Him what He would have us do. He may not require you to pack up and move to Canaan, but He certainly has something for you to do. Find out what it is and faithfully and obediently follow His direction. You will never be more satisfied than when you are in the middle of the Lord’s will.
Psalm 25:4-5 ESV 4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. 5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.
James 1:5 ESV 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
Psalm 16:7-8 ESV 7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.[d] 8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Psalm 32:8-9 ESV 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. 9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.
John 16:13 ESV
Respond - Lord, thank You for my life, for my salvation. I seek to abide in You as You abide in me following You faithfully and obediently. Show me Your way Lord. I pray for those that do not know You, that they come to You, in Jesus name. Amen.

HEAR Journaling - Genesis 11
Highlight - Genesis 11:5-9 New Living Translation
5 But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. 6 “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!7 Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.” 8 In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why the city was called Babel,[b] because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world.
Explain – The Lord in a conversation with Himself said let us go down and confuse the people with different languages and He scattered them over the world. They stopped building the Tower of Babel and babbling has meant confused speaking ever since. God was speaking with Himself when He said the “us” means that the Triune God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were all involved in the confusing of language and scattering of the people all over the world.
Apply – God is a Triune God, three persons in One. This is difficult for us to understand, but He is God, and we are not. We do not need to fully understand Him, He is way beyond our understanding, but we do need to know Him as our Lord and Savior, our friend, our everything. His love surpasses our understanding, but we can enjoy a full relationship with Him. His ways are the best so let’s follow Him faithfully and obediently forever.
Isaiah 40:28 ESV Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
John 14:6 ESV Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Matthew 6:33 ESV But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
1 John 2:16-17 ESV For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Romans 11:33 ESV Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
Jeremiah 29:11 ESV For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV
Respond - Lord, thank You for my life, for my salvation. Thank You, Lord, for this wonderful relationship that I share with You. I seek to abide in You as You abide in me following You faithfully and obediently. I pray for those that do not know You, that they come to You, in Jesus name. Amen.
