HEAR Journaling -  Matthew Chapter 1

Highlight – Matthew 1:1-2, 6, 16-17 New Living Translation

The Ancestors of Jesus the Messiah

1 This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham[a]:

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob.

… 6 Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah).

… 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah.

17 All those listed above include fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and fourteen from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah.

Explain – Matthew Chapter one has the lineage of Jesus from Abram to Joseph, Mary’s husband the legal father of Jesus.   This shows that Jesus is a legal heir to David by his stepfather, Joseph.

The Bible book of Luke covers Jesus’ lineage from a different perspective, from Mary’s lineage, from her father Eli (or Heli) to Adam.  King David mentioned in Luke verse 32. 

This shows that Jesus is the Messiah, descended from King David through both his mother, Mary, and stepfather, Joseph.

Reference Ryrie Study Bible, “The biggest difference is that after David, many of the names are different. It would seem best to explain the difference by viewing Luke’s genealogy as tracing the physical ancestors of Christ through Mary, while Matthew’s genealogy traces the kingly line of Christ through Joseph.”

Apply – The evidence that Jesus is the promised Messiah is evident.  God came to earth as a child, to become a man so that He could make His Good News known to all.  He died for everyone’s sin, then rose again making a way for each person to receive Him as Lord and Savior.

Romans 10:9 ESV Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Titus 3:5 ESV He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

Acts 4:12 ESV And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Respond- Lord, thank You for my salvation, for this awesome relationship that I share with You.  I strive to follow You obediently and faithfully.  I pray for those that do not know You as their savior will accept You and follow You through eternity.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 42

Highlight – Job 42:  New Living Translation

Conclusion: The Lord Blesses Job

10 When Job prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes. In fact, the Lord gave him twice as much as before! 11 Then all his brothers, sisters, and former friends came and feasted with him in his home. And they consoled him and comforted him because of all the trials the Lord had brought against him. And each of them brought him a gift of money[a] and a gold ring.

Explain – God blesses Job with twice as much before, but notice that God blessed him after he prayed for his three friends.  His three friends repented for the inaccurate things they said about God, and made sacrifices to God for themselves and Job prayed for them.  Then Job was blessed.

Apply – We should learn the power of forgiveness.  God cannot bless us if we harbor unforgiveness in our heart.

Mark 11:25 ESV And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

Matthew 6:14-15 ESV For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Colossians 3:13 ESV Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

1 John 4:20 ESV If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

James 5:16 ESV Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your free gift of salvation.  Show me Lord if I harbor any unforgiveness and help me to forgive fully and completely as You have forgiven me.  I pray for those that harbor unforgiveness, Lord.  Help me to be effective in sharing Your truth with everyone.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 41

Highlight – Job 41:11-13, 33-34 New Living Translation

The Lord’s Challenge Continues 

Explain – God continued His declaration to Job from a whirlwind describing a creature He called “Leviathan”, another dinosaur this time a water creature that was heavily armored.  There was no creature its equal.  God’s creation is indeed amazing and beyond anyone’s comprehension.  Job was undoubtedly at awe!

Apply – We should know that God created all things for a purpose in His masterful plan.  Our enemy, the devil, doesn’t want people to know the truth about God’s creation, he will cause confusion and division wherever he can.  We see the evidence of dinosaurs today, but human science would want us to believe they lived millions of years ago before there were humans.  This is not true, though. There are fossils in Glen Rose Texas with human footprints with dinosaur footprints (See Creation Evidence Museum http://www.creationevidence.org).  The evidence for God’s Creation is vast and actually when you really look at the theory of Darwinian Evolution you learn that it is full of holes.  For one example, there are planets and moons in our own solar system that spin backwards and some moons have different orbits, proving that the big bang theory could not possibly be true.  

We can choose to believe God’s word or believe the fables of men to our own detriment.

John 1:1-3 ESV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 

Romans 1:18-25 ESV...

Hebrews 1:3-4 ESV He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

1 John 5:20 ESV And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

1 Timothy 2:3-6 ESV This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your free gift of salvation.  Thank You, Lord, for Your Truth, the Bible, and for You Holy Spirit who leads me unto all Truth.  I pray for those that do not know You, Lord.  Help me to be an effective soldier in Your army to bring the lost to s saving knowledge of You.  I will strive to follow You faithfully and obediently, in Jesus Name, Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 40

Highlight – Job 40:1-7 New Living Translation

1 Then the Lord said to Job,

2 “Do you still want to argue with the Almighty?
    You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?”

Job Responds to the Lord

3 Then Job replied to the Lord,

4 “I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand.5 I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.”

The Lord Challenges Job Again

6 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:

7 “Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.

Explain – God continued His declaration to Job from a whirlwind asking if Job wanted to argue with the Almighty.  Job replied that he had nothing more to say.  God then continued to barrage Job with questions that he could not possibly answer. God spoke of a creature He called “Behemoth” that He created just as He created men.  He described the massive beast, obviously a dinosaur of some type, saying that it feared nothing but the Creator Himself.  Job was forced to consider his own place in God’s universe.  God has a plan for each of us.

Apply – We should know that God created all things for a purpose in His masterful plan.  Mankind was made in His image with a body, mind, and spirit.  He made us with our own will, the ability to choose to love Him and maintain a living relationship with Him through eternity, or to deny His free gift of salvation and live separated from His blessings for an ultimate disastrous eternal end.

Matthew 25:41 ESV “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Romans 6:23 ESV For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 14:6 ESV Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Mark 16:16 ESV Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

John 5:24 ESV Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 39

Highlight – Job 39 New Living Translation

The Lord’s Challenge Continues

1 “Do you know when the wild goats give birth?
    Have you watched as deer are born in the wild?
2 Do you know how many months they carry their young?
    Are you aware of the time of their delivery?
3 They crouch down to give birth to their young and deliver their offspring.4 Their young grow up in the open fields, then leave home and never return.

Explain – God continued His declaration to Job from a whirlwind.  God explains the marvels in the animal kingdom all under His capable control.

Apply – We should know that we can depend on our most capable Heavenly Father.  He is control of everything.  If we will put our faith and trust in Him, we need not fear any power on earth or in the spiritual realm.

Isaiah 45:6-7 ESV That people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things.

Philippians 4:6-7 ESV Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 41:10 ESV Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 38

Highlight – Job 38 New Living Translation

The Lord Challenges Job

1 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:

2 “Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words?3 Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.

Explain – Job finally heard from God directly from a whirlwind.  God goes on to ask Job many rhetorical questions that Job could not possibly know the answer to, nor would any mortal human being. Job listens to the Lord as He spoke to him.

Apply – We should seek to hear from God, after all, He sent His son Jesus, to earth to bring the Good News that God wants a personal relationship with us all.  Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us, taking on all the sin of the world for every person ever born and ever to be born.  We should not fear Him although He is greater and more powerful than anything or anyone that we can imagine, but He truly loves us beyond our comprehension and wants a personal relationship with each of us. 

John 10:27-28 ESV My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

Hebrews 4:12 ESV For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Romans 10:17 ESV So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Jeremiah 33:3 ESV Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

2 Timothy 3:16 ESV All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation and this wonderful relationship that I share with You.  I look forward to the intimate times that we have Lord, I yearn to hear Your voice, not audibly but imprinting upon my spirit.  I seek to listen and follow You faithfully and obediently through eternity.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 37

Highlight – Job 37 New Living Translation

19 “So teach the rest of us what to say to God. 

    We are too ignorant to make our own arguments.
20 Should God be notified that I want to speak?
    Can people even speak when they are confused?[a]

Explain – Elihu went on in Chapter 37 stating God’s amazing might and power.  He asked God to teach them what to say to God as they were too ignorant to make their own arguments.  He asked if God should be notified that he wanted to speak to the Almighty.

Apply – The great news is that yes God is open to hear us any place, any time.  

John 3:16-18 ESV 16 “For God so loved the world,[i] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

James 5:16 ESV Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

1 John 5:14-15 ESV And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

John 9:31 ESV We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him.

1 Peter 3:12 ESV For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

James 1:5-8 ESV If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 36

Highlight – Job 36:10-15 New Living Translation

Explain – Elihu stated that Job’s suffering is brought on by his sin of pride.  He suggests that God is after Job ‘s attention, and if he listens to God, God will bless him with prosperity and his years will be pleasant.  Elihu says that the godless are full of resentment and they are punished because of it.  They will die when they are young wasting their lives in immoral living.  God will recue those that suffer because He uses adversity to get their attention.   

Elihu gets so many things wrong.  God loves us all despite our sins, He wants us to turn to Him for salvation so that we can have a living active relationship with Him.  Does that mean prosperity and a pleasant life?  No, not necessarily in a worldly sense.  He will live with us and through us and provide peace in the midst of adversity.

Apply – We must learn to trust the Lord despite our circumstances knowing God always has our best interest at heart.  He will be with us, never forsake us through our life journey.

Proverbs 3:5-8 ESV Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your flesh[b] and refreshment[c] to your bones.

Romans 8:28 ESV And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

James 1:2-4 ESV Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 ESV We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

1 Peter 5:10 ESV And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

James 1:12 ESV Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 35

Highlight – Job 35:1-8 New Living Translation

Elihu Reminds Job of God’s Justice

1 Then Elihu said:

2 “Do you think it is right for you to claim, ‘I am righteous before God’?3 For you also ask, ‘What’s in it for me? What’s the use of living a righteous life?’

4 “I will answer you and all your friends, too.5 Look up into the sky, and see the clouds high above you.6 If you sin, how does that affect God? Even if you sin again and again, what effect will it have on him?7 If you are good, is this some great gift to him?  What could you possibly give him?8 No, your sins affect only people like yourself, and your good deeds also affect only humans.

Explain – Elihu stated that Job’s sins only affect people like himself.  Elihu is wrong about many things.  Actually a person’s behavior can affect others negatively or positively.  

Apply – We must learn the benefit of living obedient lives in the Lord.  Our sinful behavior can cause real injury to others, physical, emotional, and spiritual.  Others may be tempted to sin from our sinful behavior, whereas obedient behavior can bring blessings on oneself, your household, and those you interact with.

Hebrews 3: 12-15 ESV 12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Deuteronomy 30:19-20 ESV 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, 20 loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

Acts 16:31 ESV And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

1 Corinthians 7:14 ESV For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

Acts 2:38-39 ESV And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation and blessings for all my generations.  Help me Lord to be a positive influence in others to encourage them to seek and abide in You forever. I seek to follow You faithfully and obediently, always.  Amen.
