HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 34

Highlight – Job 34:10-12 New Living Translation

Elihu Accuses Job of Arrogance

10 “Listen to me, you who have understanding. Everyone knows that God doesn’t sin!
    The Almighty can do no wrong. 

11 He repays people according to their deeds. He treats people as they deserve.12 Truly, God will not do wrong. The Almighty will not twist justice.

Explain – Elihu stated that God doesn’t sin, He can do no wrong.  People will be judged rightly according to their deeds.  He is correct, there is no excuse, nor any escape from our sin other than salvation through Christ Jesus.  

Apply – We must seek the Lord Jesus Christ, accept Him as our Lord and Savior and follow His ways exclusively.

1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

James 5:16 ESV Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

James 4:17 ESV So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Romans 6:23 ESV For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Proverbs 3:5-8 ESV 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your flesh[b] and refreshment[c] to your bones.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation.  I seek to follow You faithfully and obediently, always.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 33

Highlight – Job 33:8-12 New Living Translation

Elihu Presents His Case against Job

8 “You have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard your very words.9 You said, ‘I am pure; I am without sin; I am innocent; I have no guilt.10 God is picking a quarrel with me, and he considers me his enemy.11 He puts my feet in the stocks and watches my every move.’

12 “But you are wrong, and I will show you why. For God is greater than any human being.

Explain – Elihu said that he heard Job’s account, that Job claimed to be pure, without sin, innocent, with no guilt.  He said that Job claimed that God was picking a quarrel with him.  He said that Job was wrong, and he tried to explain why.  We know that in fact, Elihu was wrong.

Apply – Once again we need to learn from Elihu’s bad example.  Instead we should remain silent with our opinions, and wait on the Lord to provide the wisdom and knowledge to share.  Only then should we speak and follow the direction of the Lord as we minister.

Proverbs 16:1-2 ESV The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit.

Deuteronomy 12:28 ESV  28 Be careful to obey all these words that I command you, that it may go well with you and with your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

Psalm 32:8 ESV I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Jeremiah 33:3 ESV Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

Romans 12:1-2 ESV I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction.  Help me, Lord, to be patient and wait on You to provide me the wisdom and knowledge to share and wisdom to remain silent until You provide Your direction.  Praise You Lord.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 32

Highlight – Job 32:1-5 New Living Translation

Elihu Responds to Job’s Friends

1 Job’s three friends refused to reply further to him because he kept insisting on his innocence.

2 Then Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite, of the clan of Ram, became angry. He was angry because Job refused to admit that he had sinned and that God was right in punishing him. 

3 He was also angry with Job’s three friends, for they made God[a] appear to be wrong by their inability to answer Job’s arguments. 

4 Elihu had waited for the others to speak to Job because they were older than he. 

5 But when he saw that they had no further reply, he spoke out angrily.

Explain – Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite became angry at the dialogue between Job and his friends.  He too believed that Job had sinned, and that God was right to punish him.  He was also angry with the three friends who failed to answer Job’s arguments.

Apply – We need to learn from Elihu that we should remain silent with our opinions, and wait on the Lord to provide the wisdom and knowledge to share.

Proverbs 17:28 ESV Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.

Psalm 141:3 ESV Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!

Proverbs 18:13 ESV If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.

James 1:19 ESV Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;

Romans 12:2 ESV Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 31

Highlight – Job 31: New Living Translation

Job’s Final Protest of Innocence

2 For what has God above chosen for us?  What is our inheritance from the Almighty on high?3 Isn’t it calamity for the wicked and misfortune for those who do evil?4 Doesn’t he see everything I do and every step I take?

5 “Have I lied to anyone or deceived anyone?6 Let God weigh me on the scales of justice, for he knows my integrity.

Explain – Job reminded his friends that the Almighty God does know all, knows everything we do, every step we take, and will judge with righteous justice. 

Apply – We need to take an honest look at our own relationship with the Lord realizing that He does indeed know all we ever thought, said, or did.  Are we ready to face His judgement?  We should seek Him today, repent for any misdeeds and strive to abide in Him through eternity.

Matthew 12:36 ESV I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,

2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Revelation 20:11-15 ESV  11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

John 3:3 ESV 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again[b] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Romans 10:9-13 ESV 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation and new life that I experience in You and with You.  I strive to seek You and follow You faithfully and obediently.  I pray for all those that do not know You, Lod, that they will seek You and find salvation in You. Praise You Lord.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 30

Highlight – Job 30: New Living Translation

Job Speaks of His Anguish

16 “And now my life seeps away.  Depression haunts my days.
17 At night my bones are filled with pain, which gnaws at me relentlessly.
18 With a strong hand, God grabs my shirt.[a] He grips me by the collar of my coat.
19 He has thrown me into the mud. I’m nothing more than dust and ashes.

20 “I cry to you, O God, but you don’t answer. I stand before you, but you don’t even look.

Explain – Job was at a point of deep despair.  He suffered from physical pain, grief from the loss of his children, dreams and visions, and rebuke from his wife and friends.  He cried out to God but heard nothing.  Silence is an answer.

Apply – We must learn that God does sometimes use silence to get our attention.  Perhaps we have been inattentive to our relationship with Him, we may experience silence when we seek Him.  Perhaps we have been disobedient to something the Lord impressed us to do, and He responds with silence to get our attention.  Sometimes, it is just His way to get us to seek Him with all the more fervor. May we not cease our efforts to seek Him.  Just ask Him why am I not hearing You Lord?  Then wait and listen attentively, watch for signs, be comforted knowing that He is always there.

Isaiah 40:31 ESV But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Psalm 27:13-14 ESV I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

James 5:11 ESV Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your attention on me and my house, and all my generations.  I strive to seek You and follow You faithfully and obediently.  I am joyful when I hear Your voice, and will strive to seek You in the time of silent for I know Your silence is for a reason.  Praise You Lord.  Amen.

Job Speaks of His Former Blessings

29 Job continued speaking:

2 “I long for the years gone by when God took care of me,3 when he lit up the way before me and I walked safely through the darkness.4 When I was in my prime, God’s friendship was felt in my home.5 The Almighty was still with me, and my children were around me.6 My steps were awash in cream, and the rocks gushed olive oil for me.

Explain – Job spoke of his younger years when God was with him and blessed Job and his family.  Life was good, he and his family did prosper.

Apply – We must learn to live at peace through the Holy Spirit despite our circumstances.

Philippians 4:11-13 ESV  11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 ESV16 Rejoice always,17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

Explain – Job spoke of the importance of wisdom and knowledge and where it can be found; only through God is His wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction available.

Apply - We should seek His wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction to keep our lives in line with His plan for us.

Proverbs 16:20-21 NLT 20 Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful. 21 The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive.

Proverbs 1:7 ESV 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 2:6, 9-11 ESV 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; … 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; 10 for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;11 discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you,

Respond – Lord, thank You for providing the vital wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction for me to be all that I can be in You, faithful and effective in Your good works.  Amen.

Highlight – Job 27:1-6 New Living Translation

Job’s Final Speech

1 Job continued speaking:

2 “I vow by the living God, who has taken away my rights, by the Almighty who has embittered my soul—3 As long as I live, while I have breath from God,4 my lips will speak no evil, and my tongue will speak no lies.5 I will never concede that you are right; I will defend my integrity until I die.6 I will maintain my innocence without wavering. My conscience is clear for as long as I live.

Explain – Job pronounced to his friends that he vowed to the living God that as long as he had breath that he would not speak evil or lies.  He would never concede that his friends were right, he would defend his integrity until his death.

Apply - We too should learn from Job to strive to be steadfast in our faith, never wavering.

Galatians 2:20 ESV I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Hebrews 10:23 ESV Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Romans 12:1 ESV I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Hebrews 3:12 ESV Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

Job’s Ninth Speech: A Response to Bildad

1 Then Job spoke again:

2 “How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the weak!3 How you have enlightened my stupidity! What wise advice you have offered!4 Where have you gotten all these wise sayings? Whose spirit speaks through you?

Explain – Job replied to Bildad the Shuhite saying that his words were of no help to Job or anyone else.  

Apply - We must realize that we must seek wisdom from a solid source.  We can obtain the wisdom of God if we will seek Him, read His Holy Word, the Bible, and seek good godly counsel as we are led by the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 13:20 ESV Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

James 3:17 ESV But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

James 1:5 ESV If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

John 16:13 ESV When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Respond – Thank You for Your Truth, knowledge, wisdom, understanding and instruction.  Through You I will strive to follow You faithfully and obediently consistently and continuously.  Praise Your Holy name!  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 25

Highlight – Job 25 New Living Translation

Bildad’s Third Response to Job

25 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: 

2 “God is powerful and dreadful. He enforces peace in the heavens.3 Who is able to count his heavenly army? Doesn’t his light shine on all the earth?4 How can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone born of a woman be pure?5 God is more glorious than the moon; he shines brighter than the stars.6 In comparison, people are maggots; we mortals are mere worms.”

Explain – Bildad the Shuhite says that no mortal is innocent before God.  This is a true statement.

Apply -  We must realize that we are sinners through the original sin of Adam and Eve we are all sinners; even a new born baby is born into original sin and needs a savior.  We can see this as a baby grows to become a toddler, we can observe their sin nature come out.  We all have this natural sin nature that only a relationship with Jesus can rectify.  He is ready to rectify Your sins today, seek Him!

Romans 5:18-19 ESV 18 Therefore, as one trespass[f] led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness[g] leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. 

Romans 3:10-12 ESV  10 as it is written: 10“None is righteous, no, not one; 11no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

1 John 1:8-10 ESV 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
