HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 14

Highlight Job 14:1-5 New Living Translation

1“How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble!
2 We blossom like a flower and then wither. Like a passing shadow, we quickly disappear.
3 Must you keep an eye on such a frail creature and demand an accounting from me?
4 Who can bring purity out of an impure person? No one!
5 You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer.

Explain – Job recognized that life is frail, short, and full of trouble.  God has decided the length of every creature’s life including people.

Apply –   We must learn to look at life from God’s perspective.  Our life was created by Him for a planned duration, let us honor Him by living faithful, obedient, and fruitful lives in Him for this short time we have on this earth.  Then we will live with Him through eternity!

John 10:28-30 ESV I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one.

1 John 2:17 ESV And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

1 Timothy 6:12 ESV Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Respond – Lord, thank You for my eternal life in You.  Help me Lord to be an effective servant faithful and obedient through eternity.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 13

Highlight Job 13:6-10 New Living Translation

Job Wants to Argue His Case with God

6 Listen to my charge; pay attention to my arguments.

7 “Are you defending God with lies? Do you make your dishonest arguments for his sake?8 Will you slant your testimony in his favor? Will you argue God’s case for him?9 What will happen when he finds out what you are doing? Can you fool him as easily as you fool people?10 No, you will be in trouble with him if you secretly slant your testimony in his favor.

Explain – Job rebuked his friends for representing God without His knowledge or approval.  He charges them by not being equipped to speak for God and warns that when He finds out it may be bad news for them.

Apply –   We can learn from these wise words.  We must discern the advice and counsel we receive from others.  They may be coming with good intentions providing sound advice from their perspective, but God is the source of Truth, seek counsel from Him.  Also beware, often there is deceptive advice and counsel from ungodly sources that is trying to lead you off the path that God would have you follow.

1 John 4:1 ESV Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 ESV For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Hebrews 4:12 ESV For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Lastly, let us beware that we are providing sound godly counsel to others and not worldly wisdom.

Respond – Lord, thank You for my life in You.  Help me Lord to be an effective servant to encourage and build up others for a greater relationship with You for all of us.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 12

Highlight Job 12:1-5 New Living Translation

Job’s Fourth Speech: A Response to Zophar

12 Then Job spoke again:

2 “You people really know everything, don’t you? And when you die, wisdom will die with you!3 Well, I know a few things myself—and you’re no better than I am.
    Who doesn’t know these things you’ve been saying?
4 Yet my friends laugh at me, for I call on God and expect an answer.
I am a just and blameless man, yet they laugh at me.
5 People who are at ease mock those in trouble. They give a push to people who are stumbling.

Explain – Job rebuked his friends by saying that they had not told him anything that he didn’t already know. He stated that he was a blameless man, and his friends were of no comfort to him.  He says people who are at ease mock people in trouble, they give a push to people stumbling.  In other words, they are more trouble than help despite possible good intentions.

Apply –   We need to be on guard to ensure that we are effective in our walk with the Lord, encouraging each other to love and good works through our relationship with the Lord.

Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Romans 15:5-6 NIV 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Speak positive things to one another, build each other up.

Respond – Lord, thank You for my life in You.  Help me Lord to be an effective servant to encourage and build up others for a greater relationship with You for all of us.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 11

Highlight Job 11:13-16 New Living Translation

Zophar’s First Response to Job

13 “If only you would prepare your heart and lift up your hands to him in prayer!14 Get rid of your sins, and leave all iniquity behind you.15 Then your face will brighten with innocence. You will be strong and free of fear.16 You will forget your misery; it will be like water flowing away.

Explain – Zophar, Job’s third friend, expressed his thoughts.  He suggested that Job needed to prepare his heart and lift up his hands to God in prayer.  Zophar said that Job needed to get rid of his sins and all will be better.  He suggested that Job would forget his misery with a brighter life.  Zofar was as clueless to the source of Job’s problem as Job’s other two friends, Eliphaz and Bildad.  Job was not tested because of his sins.  He was tested because God chose him to be tested.

Apply – We all benefit for the suffering and testing of Job, and the Bible Book of Job that records his testing, trials, and responses that provide so many very valuable life lessons for us as we walk our journey with the Lord.  We do have the Holy Spirit to walk through this perilous life with us.  He will provide us comfort when even those close to us do not understand.

John 14:16-17 ESV And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

1 Corinthians 2:10-13 ESV 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.[d]

We should always seek God’s wisdom through the Holy Spirit before ministering to anyone, we need to be sensitive to what He will reveal to us and what we should say and share with others.

Respond – Lord, thank You for this purposeful truth.  Help me Lord to be an effective advocate for You to the people that I encounter.  Help me see what You would have me see, think what You would have me think, and do what You would have me do including to say what You would direct me to share.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 10

Highlight – Job 10:1-7  New Living Translation

Job Frames His Plea to God

“I am disgusted with my life. Let me complain freely. My bitter soul must complain.2 I will say to God, ‘Don’t simply condemn me— tell me the charge you are bringing against me.3 What do you gain by oppressing me? Why do you reject me, the work of your own hands, while smiling on the schemes of the wicked?4 Are your eyes like those of a human? Do you see things only as people see them?5 Is your lifetime only as long as ours? Is your life so short 6 that you must quickly probe for my guilt and search for my sin?7 Although you know I am not guilty, no one can rescue me from your hands.

Explain –  Job prayed to God asking why he was going through the tests and trials.  He states, in a roundabout way, that God does see all and know all and should have known that Job was not guilty.  This is all true, but we know that God’s ways are not our ways, and God has no responsibility to explain things to us, especially since we probably couldn’t comprehend His plan anyway.

Apply – We should learn that God may not answer our “Why?” question, but He will answer the “What now, Lord?” question.  His ways are not our ways, we must trust and obey so He will lead us the right way.

Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT  8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. 9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways an d my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Respond – Lord, thank You for being my Lord, my savior.  Help me resist vain curiosity, Lord, help me to seek You in all my ways and obediently follow You.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 9

Highlight – Job 9:32-35 New Living Translation

Job’s Third Speech: A Response to Bildad

32 “God is not a mortal like me, so I cannot argue with him or take him to trial.33 If only there were a mediator between us, someone who could bring us together.34 The mediator could make God stop beating me, and I would no longer live in terror of his punishment.35 Then I could speak to him without fear, but I cannot do that in my own strength.

Explain –  Job replied to Bildad saying that he was but a mortal man, he was powerless to take his case to God himself.  He said that he wished that there was a mediator between him and God.  God recognized the need for a mediator too and provided one, Jesus Christ is our mediator with Father God.

Apply – We are blessed because Jesus died for our sins, rose again, and now sits at God the Father’s right hand as a mediator for all that will accept Him as Lord and Savior!

1 Timothy 2:5-6 ESV  5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 

Hebrews 9:15 ESV Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

Respond – Lord, thank You for being my Lord, my savior, my mediator.  I strive to abide in You as You abide in me, to follow You faithfully and obediently forever.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 8

Highlight – Job 8:1-6 New Living Translation

Bildad’s First Response to Job

8 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied to Job:

2 “How long will you go on like this?  You sound like a blustering wind.3 Does God twist justice? Does the Almighty twist what is right?4 Your children must have sinned against him, so their punishment was well deserved.5 But if you pray to God and seek the favor of the Almighty, 6 and if you are pure and live with integrity, he will surely rise up and restore your happy home.

Explain – Bildad the Shuhite, another friend of Job’s, replied to Job with a rebuke.  He said how long will you go on blustering like wind.  He said that Job’s children brought on their own destruction by sinning.  He encourages Job to seek God, to live pure with integrity, God will surely restore his happy home.

Apply – Bildad the Shuhite fell into the same trap as Eliphaz, by focusing on his own reasoning and providing suggestions that came from his own heart and mind.  Again, despite his good intentions, he was not really helping Job as we know that Job had lived a faithful life of integrity in his relationship with God.  We must learn to trust in the Lord and comfort one another with the love and understanding that is only possible through the Holy Spirit in our own lives.

2 Corinthians 1:4 ESV Who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Philippians 2:1-4 ESV  So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Respond – Lord, thank You for these important lessons of life.  Help me learn to see with Your eyes, to hear with Your ears, think with Your mind, and love with Your love as You grow me in Your image.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 7

Highlight – Job 7:11-16 New Living Translation

Job Cries out to God

11 “I cannot keep from speaking. I must express my anguish. My bitter soul must complain.12 Am I a sea monster or a dragon that you must place me under guard?13 I think, ‘My bed will comfort me, and sleep will ease my misery,’14 but then you shatter me with dreams and terrify me with visions.15 I would rather be strangled—rather die than suffer like this.16 I hate my life and don’t want to go on living. Oh, leave me alone for my few remaining days.

Explain – Job cries out to God concerning his misery.  He has lost his children and all his worldly possessions. His health is under attack as he is tormented by boils, scabs, and infections. Here in Chapter 7 he reveals that he is also tormented with terrifying dreams and visions.  He doesn’t want to go on living, he asks to be left alone in his last days.  Who can blame him?  You can see that he is blaming God, not recognizing that there is a devil that wants to lie, kill, and destroy all faithful followers of the Lord.  

Apply – It is a mystery why God opened Job up to this torment, but we can all profit from these lessons.  May we learn them well so that we may avoid the actual experiences ourselves.  May we learn to trust in the Lord no matter our circumstances.

Psalm 28:7 ESV The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.

Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

James 4:7 ESV Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Respond – Lord, thank You for these important lessons of life.  I know that I do struggle with spiritual powers, so let me Lord be prepared with Your spiritual armor to face my adversary, to put my trust and confidence in You, as I submit myself to You. I know that You will be with me through all my days through eternity.  I seek to acknowledge You in all of my ways and to follow You always faithfully and obediently.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 6

Highlight – Job 6:14-17, 21-26 New Living Translation

Job’s Second Speech: A Response to Eliphaz

14  “One should be kind to a fainting friend, but you accuse me without any fear of the Almighty.[b]
15 My brothers, you have proved as unreliable as a seasonal brook that overflows its banks in the spring 16 when it is swollen with ice and melting snow.
17 But when the hot weather arrives, the water disappears. The brook vanishes in the heat.
…

21 You, too, have given no help. You have seen my calamity, and you are afraid.
22 But why? Have I ever asked you for a gift? Have I begged for anything of yours for myself?
23 Have I asked you to rescue me from my enemies, or to save me from ruthless people?
24 Teach me, and I will keep quiet. Show me what I have done wrong.
25 Honest words can be painful, but what do your criticisms amount to?
26 Do you think your words are convincing when you disregard my cry of desperation?

Explain – Job responds to Eliphaz’s “sermon”, explaining that his words bring no comfort. Job says that Eliphaz has given no help. Job says that Eliphaz has no fear of the Almighty, so his criticisms are from his own heart and not wisdom from God.  Job says that honest words can be painful, but criticisms are useless to someone not prepared to receive them.  Eliphaz words were missing the compassion and wisdom only available from God.

Apply – Job’s criticism of his friends is spot on.  We can learn from his words and apply these truths today.  The Holy Spirit will give us the words to say if we will quietly listen to Him.  Let’s ask Him in advance, before we speak, for wisdom to love and support our friends.  Then carefully through the guidance of the Holy Spirit let us minister to one another in His Spirit and Truth.   We will all benefit mightily.

Proverbs 18:2 ESV 2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.

Ephesians 4:29 ESV 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Respond – Lord, thank You for being there for me through every circumstance.  Help me to better listen to You before I listen to others, and to say what You would have me to say.  Help me resist the temptation to provide meaningless solutions, but rather to listen to Your counsel and think, say, and do what You would have me to do.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 5

Highlight – Job 5:8-9, 17-18 New Living Translation

Eliphaz’s Response Continues

8 “If I were you, I would go to God and present my case to him.9 He does great things too marvelous to understand.
    He performs countless miracles.

17 “But consider the joy of those corrected by God!
    Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin.
18 For though he wounds, he also bandages.
    He strikes, but his hands also heal.

Explain – Eliphaz, one of Job’s friends, continues his recommendations to Job, from Chapter 4.  He recommends that Job to go to God and present his case to Him.  He also points out the joy to be had for those that have been corrected by God.  God will bandage and heal those from their afflictions.  Eliphaz is not really helping Job, as we already know that Job had a strong and faithful relationship with God, and Eliphaz says that Job used to encourage many others.

Apply – We can learn that Eliphaz may have had good intentions, but he was not being helpful or compassionate, rather he was searching for a solution to an unsolvable circumstance.  I find myself in the same place, I often try to give someone a solution to their problem rather than listening to them and really holding them up in their anguish.  The Holy Spirit will give us the words to say if we will quietly listen to Him.  Let’s ask Him in advance of our visit for wisdom to love and support our friends, then we can sit with them and share their troubles while providing true helpful words that only the Holy Spirit can provide.

Respond – Lord, thank You for being there for me through every circumstance.  Help me to better listen to You before I listen to others, and to say what You would have me to say.  Help me resist the temptation to provide meaningless solutions, but rather to listen to Your counsel and think, say, and do what You would have me to do.  Amen.
