Highlight Job 24:1, 22-25 New Living Translation

Job Asks Why the Wicked Are Not Punished

Explain – Job asks why the Almighty God doesn’t bring judgement to the wicked, but later in verses 22-24 he explains that God is always watching the wicked and they ultimately will receive the judgement they deserve.  

Apply – This is the most critical decision that each person must make before they die, and let there be no mistake, no decision is a decision to reject Jesus.  We will all stand judgement after we die.  The great news is that we don’t have to receive the judgement that we all deserve.  Jesus has made a way for all to avoid certain judgement.

John 3:16-18 ESV “For God so loved the world...

Here are some scripture references on certain judgement by Jesus:

Hebrews 9:27 ESV And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

John 5:22 ESV For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,

2 Timothy 4:1 ESV I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

John 12:48 ESV The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

2 Peter 2:4 ESV For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;

Revelation 21:8 ESV But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Here are some scripture verses explaining certain mercy available through faith in Jesus Christ:

Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Titus 3:5 ESV He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

Acts 4:12 ESV And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

John 14:6 ESV Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Ephesians 2:8 ESV For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Romans 10:9 ESV Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your free gift of my salvation and the joyful life that I enjoy in You and with You.  I pray that those that do not know You will find You today, in Jesus name, Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 23

Highlight Job 23:1-7 New Living Translation

Job’s Eighth Speech: A Response to Eliphaz

1 Then Job spoke again:

2 “My complaint today is still a bitter one, and I try hard not to groan aloud.3 If only I knew where to find God, I would go to his court.4 I would lay out my case and present my arguments.5 Then I would listen to his reply and understand what he says to me.6 Would he use his great power to argue with me? No, he would give me a fair hearing.7 Honest people can reason with him, so I would be forever acquitted by my judge.

Explain – Job replied to Eliphaz saying that if he only knew where to find God, he would present his case to Him.  He would listen to the Lord’s reply and understand.  He expects that the Lord would give him a fair hearing and a release from torment.

Apply – When Jesus died for our sins and rose again, He left the Holy Spirit as our comforter here on the earth.  The Holy Spirit indwells us and will never leave us.  Jesus rose to be our advocate with the Father God.  We can pray and appeal to the Lord any time and any place, He always hears our prayers - hallelujah!

1 John 5:14 ESV And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

1 Peter 3:12 ESV For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

John 14:26 ESV But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

1 John 2:1-2 ESV My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your love and provision for me.  Thank You, Holy Spirit, for indwelling me and providing a path unto all Truth, thank You, Dear Jesus for my life and Your gift of salvation and for being my advocate to Father God.  Thank You Father God for all You are and all You do.  I love and worship You, God the three in one!  Amen.

Highlight Job 22: New Living Translation

Eliphaz’s Third Response to Job

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

2 “Can a person do anything to help God? Can even a wise person be helpful to him?3 Is it any advantage to the Almighty if you are righteous? Would it be any gain to him if you were perfect?

Explain – Eliphaz makes an interesting statement, “Can a person do anything to help God?”, “Is it any advantage to the Almighty if you are righteous?  The answer is yes, as God has given each of us our own will, our own ability to choose, we can please God with our faith.

Apply – When we are truly faithful and righteous, we bring God joy just as our children bring us joy when they willingly listen and obey.

Hebrews 11:6 ESV And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

1 Thessalonians 2:4 ESV But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.

Romans 12:2 ESV Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

1 John 3:22 ESV And whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your love and this wonderful relationship that we share.  I seek to abide in You as You abide in me, to follow You faithfully and obediently.  I want to bring You joy Lord and I thank You for the joy that You have brought into my life.  Amen.

Highlight Job 21: New Living Translation

Job’s Seventh Speech: A Response to Zophar

34 “How can your empty clichés comfort me?
    All your explanations are lies!”

Explain – Job explains, in Job Chapter 21, that rich people are often spared calamity, that his friend’s conclusion is false, Job is not being tormented because of his wealth or any sin.  He reminds them in verse 34 that their empty clichés provide no comfort, and their accusations are lies.

Apply – We must learn to trust and lean on God in all circumstances including personal attacks.  We must trust in the Lord and let Him fight and win the battles in our lives.

Isaiah 41:10 ESV Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Psalm 138:7 ESV Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.

1 John 4:4 ESV Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your protection over me and my house and all my generations.  Help me Lord to hear and respond correctly, to follow Your direction as I know Your ways are the best.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 20

Highlight Job 20:4-7 New Living Translation

Zophar’s Second Response to Job

4 “Don’t you realize that from the beginning of time, ever since people were first placed on the earth,5 the triumph of the wicked has been short lived and the joy of the godless has been only temporary?6 Though the pride of the godless reaches to the heavens and their heads touch the clouds, 

7 yet they will vanish forever, thrown away like their own dung. Those who knew them will ask, ‘Where are they?’

Explain – Zophar, the Naamathite, responded to Job with this explanation of God’s final judgement on the wicked.  I guess that Zophar was implying that Job was wicked.  Nonetheless. Zophar is correct about the ultimate fate of the wicked without salvation, he was wrong about Job being wicked, though.

Apply –   We must understand that there is a terrible fate for anyone that dies not knowing Jesus Christ as their Savior.  Faith is the substance of our salvation and we must pass that knowledge on to others.  Others must know!  We must seek God, abide in the Holy Spirit as He abides in us, follow Him, and do what He directs for the Glory of God.

Matthew 28:19 ESV Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Romans 10:14-15 ESV How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your free gift of salvation and a new life with You and in You.  Help me Lord to be an effective servant for Your Glory to share Your Gospel Truth with those that do not know You.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 19

Highlight Job 19:25-27 New Living Translation

Job’s Sixth Speech: A Response to Bildad

25 “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last.26 And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God![b]27 I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought!

Explain – Job responds to Bildad with a very touching description of just how he has been persecuted, but in the verses above he is still strong and steadfast in his faith to God.  He says that he was looking forward when he will pass away and see God with his own eyes as was overwhelmed by the thought of it, despite his anguish.  He declares that his Redeemer Lives!

Apply –   We too know our Lord through our salvation through Jesus Christ, we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit.  We believers do know His live giving joy in any and all circumstances and we too will one day be with Him.

Revelation 21:4 ESV He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

1 Corinthians 2:9 ESV But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—

Respond – Lord, thanks be to You for all You are.  I strive to abide in You as You abide in me, to follow You faithfully and obediently.  I so look forward to the times we have together and definitely look forward to spending eternity with You.  I pray for those that do not know You that today is the day of their salvation.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 18

Highlight Job 18: New Living Translation

Bildad’s Second Response to Job

18 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:

2 “How long before you stop talking? Speak sense if you want us to answer!3 Do you think we are mere animals? Do you think we are stupid?4 You may tear out your hair in anger, but will that destroy the earth? Will it make the rocks tremble?

…21 They will say, ‘This was the home of a wicked person, the place of one who rejected God.’”

Explain – Bildad the Shuhite, Job’s friend (supposedly), chastises Job for his attitude.  Bildad contends that Job must have hidden sin and rebellion from God for this to be happening.  He says that people will say that Job was a wicked man.

Apply –   We must come to a place where we will reject the communication of those that hurt us or threaten our relationship with God.  

Psalm 1:1-2 ESV 1 Blessed is the man[a] who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;2 but his delight is in the law[b] of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.

Phillipians 4:4-7 ESV 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness[d] be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 

Respond – Lord, help me to choose people of good character to associate with, people that we can both benefit in spending time together, that will provide sound and compassionate counsel from Your heart.  Please instill in me the discernment to recognize evil even when disguised as good. I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently and will rely on You for my comfort, joy, and peace despite any circumstances.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 17

Highlight Job 17:1-4 New Living Translation

Job Continues to Defend His Innocence

1“My spirit is crushed, and my life is nearly snuffed out. The grave is ready to receive me.2 I am surrounded by mockers. I watch how bitterly they taunt me.

3 “You must defend my innocence, O God, since no one else will stand up for me.4 You have closed their minds to understanding, but do not let them triumph.

Explain – Job was at his last resort.  Remember, he had lost his children, all his livestock, and all his fields had been burned.  To top that off he was cursed with boils from head to foot, and suffered from dreams and visions.  Satan had unloaded on Job, with God’s permission.  His friends assumed that he was hiding sin and ignoring God while the opposite was true, he was an honorable man with faith and reverence for God. Through all this he never cursed God.

Apply –   Job’s sufferings and his responses provide lessons for us to apply.  We must trust the Lord no matter our circumstances, our family’s circumstances, our financial condition, our personal health – despite all we must stand firm in our faith, which is only possible with a living relationship with the Lord through salvation in Jesus Christ and indwelling of the Holy Spirit to provide us the mediation, comfort, compassion, and direction that we will surely require when we undergo difficult times.

Respond – Lord, I do love You, Lord.  I reaffirm my faith in You. I strive to abide in You while You abide in me.  I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently and will rely on You for my comfort, joy, and peace despite any circumstances.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 16

Highlight Job 16:1-7 New Living Translation

Job’s Fifth Speech: A Response to Eliphaz

16 Then Job spoke again:

2 “I have heard all this before. What miserable comforters you are!3 Won’t you ever stop blowing hot air? What makes you keep on talking?4 I could say the same things if you were in my place. I could spout off criticism and shake my head at you.5 But if it were me, I would encourage you. I would try to take away your grief.6 Instead, I suffer if I defend myself, and I suffer no less if I refuse to speak.

7 “O God, you have ground me down and devastated my family.

Explain – Job responded to Eliphaz by saying that his friends were miserable comforters.  He said that if the tables were turned, Job says that he would be trying to comfort rather than criticize.  

Apply –   Job’s comments are applicable today.  We too should be hesitant to criticize and be more generous with encouragement when we are talking with people going through difficult times.  We must begin with prayer and searching the Lord for His guidance in sharing time with people who are in a struggle with adversity.

Respond – Lord, thank You for these important life lessons.  Help me Lord to be a wise, faithful and compassionate servant always following You by abiding in You as You abide in me.  May I faithfully and obediently follow You through eternity.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 15

Highlight Job 15:1-6 New Living Translation

Eliphaz’s Second Response to Job

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

2 “A wise man wouldn’t answer with such empty talk! You are nothing but a windbag.3 The wise don’t engage in empty chatter. What good are such words?4 Have you no fear of God, no reverence for him?5 Your sins are telling your mouth what to say. Your words are based on clever deception.6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I.  Your own lips testify against you.

Explain – Eliphaz, Job’s friend (supposedly), chastised Job for his attitude.  He accuses Job of hiding some wicked sin that has brought on the severe test and trials.  He asked if Job had no fear of God, no reverence for Him.  He said that Job’s own mouth condemned him.  

We know ourselves, since we are reading the story after the fact, that Job was righteous and had a strong reverence for God as testified by God Himself to Satan.  Eliphaz obviously could not comprehend that God would allow such anguish to befall a righteous man.  This is difficult for us to understand too!

Apply –   God’s hand was on Job, He would not permit Satan to kill Job, and we know that eventually Job is fully restored better than before, but there is more to learn as we continue to read through the Bible Book of Job.  We can learn here that God is faithful, He will not desert us.  We may have some well-meaning friends giving us poor advice and little compassion, but let there be no doubt, God will preserve us and will always make a way out for us.  His way is always best!

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NLT 12 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

2 Corinthians 1-8-10 NLT 8 We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters,[b] about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. 9 In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. 10 And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.

James 1:2-4 NLT 2 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Respond – Lord, thank You for all You are and all You do for me.  Help me Lord to be joyful, effective, and willingly adaptable in the lessons of life that You may bring my way.  I am grateful for Your loving guidance.  Help me Lord to be all I can be in You.  Amen.
