    HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 4

Highlight - Job 4:1-6 New Living Translation

    Eliphaz’s First Response to Job

4 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied to Job:

2 “Will you be patient and let me say a word?
For who could keep from speaking out?

    3 “In the past you have encouraged many people;
you have strengthened those who were weak.
    4 Your words have supported those who were falling;
you encouraged those with shaky knees.
5 But now when trouble strikes, you lose heart.
You are terrified when it touches you.
6 Doesn’t your reverence for God give you confidence?
Doesn’t your life of integrity give you hope?

Explain – Eliphaz, one of Job’s friends, replied to Job’s rant about wishing he was never born in Chapter 3.  He reminds Job that he used to be an encourager for many people.  He supported the weak.  Eliphaz says that now Job has lost heart now that trouble struck him and his family.  He encourages Job to maintain his reverence for God, that his past life of integrity should give him hope.

Job had to undergo tests and trials that I would hope no one else must stand, he is but a man, but is indeed a man of strong faith.

Apply – It is easy to look from the outside in on someone’s sufferings and encourage them to stand strong, while when the tables are turned, it is difficult to see the blessings and faithfulness of the Lord when you yourself are undergoing tests and trials that don’t even compare with what Job had to endure.  Whatever the circumstance we do need to lift up and encourage each other.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Proverbs 27:17 ESV 17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.[a]

Hebrews 10:23-25 ESV Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Respond – Lord, thank You for being there for me through every circumstance, testing and trial.  I pray to be a strong encourager, to lift op fellow believers in their time of need and to be a willing and adaptable servant to receive and apply the encouragement provided to me.  Amen.

    HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 3

Highlight - Job 3:1-4-10 New Living Translation

3 At last Job spoke, and he cursed the day of his birth.

2 He said: 3 “Let the day of my birth be erased, and the night I was conceived.4 Let that day be turned to darkness.

Let it be lost even to God on high, and let no light shine on it.

Explain - Job having suffered so severely cursed the day he was born, but not that he never cursed God for his afflictions.

Apply – I saw this post today on Facebook which is very applicable to this study.  Thank You Lord for this post…

If Job could have read Job 42:12 ahead of time, if he had known God would "bless the latter days of Job more than his beginning," do you think he would have walked through his suffering differently?

In reality, Job didn't know how his circumstances would end. And neither do we.

We can't always know how a hard season will end, but we can choose how we will walk through it. Job models for us how we can bring our deepest hurts to God in full honesty. We can process our fears with Him in prayer. The suffering we experience can become the greatest opportunity for us to trust God in an intimate way ... if we allow it.

I agree, the lesson to be learned and applied are many, the one that I am focusing on is to trust God no matter the circumstances, He is ever faithful and it isn’t necessary for us to understand it or to approve, just to trust and obey!

Respond – Lord, thank You for being there for me through every circumstance, test and trial.  I look so forward to the plan and path You have for me to follow.  Help me Lord to stay right in the middle of Your will, always.  Amen.

    HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 2

Highlight – Job 2:1-10 New Living Translation

2 One day the members of the heavenly court[a] came again to present themselves before the Lord, and the Accuser, Satan,[b] came with them.

2 “Where have you come from?” the Lord asked Satan. Satan answered the Lord, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.”

3 Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you urged me to harm him without cause.”

4 Satan replied to the Lord, “Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life. 5 But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!”

6 “All right, do with him as you please,” the Lord said to Satan. “But spare his life.”

7 So Satan left the Lord’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot.

8 Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes.

9 His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.”

10 But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.

Explain – The Lord asked Satan if he had noticed that Job was still faithful to God despite all the Satan had done to him.  Satan said that if he could attack his health, Job would surely curse God.  So, again God permitted Satan to attack Job’s health, but must not kill him.  Job was infested with boils from head to foot!  Job’s wife even tempted Job to curse God, but Job was firm in his faithfulness to God despite his circumstances!

Apply – We too can learn to trust God in any and all circumstances, knowing that He will be with us through all our adversities.  We will be tempted to cry out and complain to God, or even curse Him, but we must be resolute in our faithfulness.

Respond – Lord, thank You for my salvation and my relationship with You.  Thank You for my Brother Job and his testimony of standing strong in his faithfulness with You.  I strive to abide in You as You abide in me, to faithfully and obediently follow You consistently and continuously withstanding the temptations to turn from You.  Amen.

    HEAR Journaling Job Chapter 1

Highlight – Job 1:1-12 New Living Translation

Explain – Job was a blameless man of integrity that feared God and avoided evil.  He was blessed by God being the richest man in the area.  Job attempted to cleanse his children’s sins by offering burnt offerings for each of them, he feared that his children had cursed God in their hearts.

Then one day in the heavenly court God and Satan discussed Job.  Satan said that if God would lift His hedge of protection from around Job that Satan would be able to tempt Job to curse God.  God gave Satan permission to test Job except for death.  The entire book of Job describes the tests and trials as well as Job’s reaction to them.  Fascinating indeed and much to learn and apply to our lives today.

Apply – There is much we can learn from reading the bible book of Job.  Chapter one lays out the premise, Job is a righteous man of integrity who fears God and avoids evil.  His one described fault is that he feared for his children’s sins and tried to cover their sins with burnt offerings.  God has His ways, after all, He is God and we are not.  He chose to let Satan test Job to see if he would curse God.  Sometimes we feel like we are being tested, tested to more that we think we can stand.

Have you cursed God?  If so, do not fear His wrath but accept His forgiveness.  Repent and seek Him, He will forgive You.  He is faithful to forgive all our sins, but we must repent on our own.  No one can repent for someone else; we must repent and be born again, each of us.

John 3:3 ESV -   Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again[b] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

John 14:6 ESV Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Acts 4:12 ESV And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Hebrews 4:16 ESV Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Respond – Lord, thank You for my salvation and my relationship with You.  Thank You for my Brother Job and his testimony of tests, trials, and his faithful responses, and Your faithful guidance through all his sufferings.  Lord, I look forward to the path and plan You have for me.  Help me to be faithfully obedient and effective in my walk with You, Amen.

Highlight – Colossians Chapter 4:1-6  New Living Translation

4 Masters, be just and fair to your slaves. Remember that you also have a Master—in heaven.2 Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. 3 Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains. 4 Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should.

5 Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractive[a] so that you will have the right response for everyone.

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Colosse that they should be just and fair to slaves. He told them to devote themselves to prayer with an alert mind and thankful heart.  He instructed them to live wisely among non-believers and make the most of every opportunity to share the Gospel.

Apply – We too should be just and fair to slaves, employees, waiters, doctors, nurses, pastors, etc. – anyone that serves us. We too should devote ourselves to prayer with an alert mind and thankful heart.  We should always follow the leading of the Holy Spirit so that we will live wisely among non-believers and make the most of every opportunity to share the Gospel.

Respond – Lord, I strive to be just and fair to everyone. I strive to devote myself to prayer with an alert mind and thankful heart.  I strive to always follow You faithfully and obediently so that I will live wisely among non-believers and make the most of every opportunity to share the Gospel.  Amen.

Highlight – Colossians Chapter 3:1-4  New Living Translation

3 Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your[a] life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

Respond – Lord, I understand that I am raised to a new life in You.  I will strive to focus on the realities of heaven and not the things of earth.  I know that I have died to this worldly life; my real life is hidden with You.  I look forward when You are revealed to the whole world.  All of us in Your body will all share in Your glory.  I resist the temptations of the enemy that would have me consumed with worry, fear, and confusion as this worldly system collapses.  I am encouraging my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to fear not, reminding them that You are with us unto the end of the age.

6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.  8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers[a] of this world, rather than from Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.[b] 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Colosse that they had to continue to follow Him so that their faith would grow strong in the Truth.  He cautioned them not to let anyone capture them with empty philosophies from forces other than from Christ.  He reminded them that they were complete through their union with Christ.

21 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.  23 But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it.
