HEAR Journaling Philippians Chapter 4

Highlight – Philippians Chapter 4:  New Living Translation

4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.[c]  6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.  8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Philippi that they should not worry about anything, but instead they were to pray about everything and experience God’s peace.  He instructed them to fix their thoughts on what was true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable; things excellent and worthy of praise.  He encouraged them to keep and practice all that they had learned.

Apply – We too should not worry about anything, but instead we should pray about everything and experience God’s peace.  We too should fix our thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable; things excellent and worthy of praise.  We should encourage each other to keep and practice all that we have learned.

Respond – Lord, help me to not worry about anything.  I will strive to pray about everything and experience Your peace.  I will strive to fix my thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable; things excellent and worthy of praise.  I will encourage others to keep and practice all that we have learned.  Amen

HEAR Journaling Philippians Chapter 3

Highlight – Philippians Chapter 3:12-16  New Living Translation

12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it,[d] but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead,14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.  15 Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. 16 But we must hold on to the progress we have already made.

Explain – Paul explained to the believers in Philippi that they had to forget the past and look forward to what lied ahead, to press on to reach the end of the race to receive the heavenly prize which God through Jesus Christ had called them.  That is to mean that they had a calling from the Lord Jesus Christ and they needed to abide in Him throughout their lives until they received the heavenly reward.

Apply – We too should forget the past and look forward to what lies ahead, to press on to reach the end of our race to receive the heavenly prize which God through Jesus Christ has called us.  

Respond – Lord, I strive to forget the past and look forward to what lies ahead in my walk with You, to press on to reach the end of my race and receive the heavenly prize which You through Jesus Christ has called me.

HEAR Journaling Philippians Chapter 2

Highlight – Philippians Chapter 2:12-18  New Living Translation

12 Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. 13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. 14 Do everything without complaining and arguing, 15 so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. 16 Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless. 17 But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God,[e] just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy. 18 Yes, you should rejoice, and I will share your joy.

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Philippi that they should work to show the results of their salvation, doing everything without complaining or arguing.  They were instructed to live clean innocent lives as children of God, shining God’s light into the world. He assures them that they will all share in the joy of God in the day of Christ’s return.

Apply – We too should work to show the results of our salvation, doing everything without complaining or arguing.  We too should live clean innocent lives as children of God, shining God’s light into the world.  We can be assured that we will all share in the joy of God in the day of Christ’s return.

HEAR Journaling Philippians Chapter 1

Highlight – Philippians Chapter 1:3-5  New Living Translation

3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; 

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Philippi that the Lord God who has begun a good work in them will continue to complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.  That is that the Lord will continue to complete His good work in them until they die or upon the return of Jesus Christ.

Apply – We too should have confidence knowing that the Lord God who has begun a good work in us will continue to complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.  That is that the Lord will continue to complete His good work in us until we die or upon the return of Jesus Christ.  We should abide in Him as He abides in us so that we will maximize our time in Him so that He can grow us fully and completely.  

Respond – Lord, I have confidence knowing that You, who has begun a good work in me, will continue to complete it until I meet You in heaven.  I strive to abide in You as You abide in me so that I will maximize my time in You.  Help me to remain steadfast in You always.

HEAR Journaling Ephesians Chapter 6

Highlight – Ephesians Chapter 6:10-18 New Living Translation

10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we[d] are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.[e] 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f] 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.[g]

Explain – Paul explains that believers are not fighting flesh and blood, but believers are fighting rulers and authorities in unseen places.  These are spiritual battles that must be fought with Spiritual power and tools.  God provides the Armor of God for us to be able to fight and win spiritual battles.

1)     Belt of Truth

2)    Body Armor of Righteousness (Breastplate in the KJV)

3)    Shoes for the peace of the Good News

4)    Shield of Faith

5)    Helmet of Salvation

6)    Sword of the Spirit

7)    Praying in the Spirit at all times

8)    Stay alert and be persistent in prayer.

Apply – We must seek the Holy Spirit to provide us wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction to effectively use the Armor of God to fight and win spiritual battles.

HEAR Journaling Ephesians Chapter 5

Highlight – Ephesians Chapter 5:1-9 New Living Translation

5 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us[a] and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. 3 Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people.4 Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.5 You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. 6 Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.7 Don’t participate in the things these people do. 8 For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! 9 For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Ephesus that their lives should imitate Christ.  No immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God.  Believers are filled with the light of the Holy Spirit so believers should produce only what is good, right, and true.

Apply – We too should seek lives that imitate Christ.  We know that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God.  We are filled with the light of the Holy Spirit so we too should produce only what is good, right, and true.

Respond – Lord, I thank You for Your provision of mercy, salvation, and a new life in You.  I strive to abide in You as You abide in me. Help me to be all that I can be in You and to recognize and resist the temptations that would try to lead me astray, in Jesus Name, Amen.

HEAR Journaling Ephesians Chapter 4

Highlight – Ephesians Chapter 4:11-16 New Living Translation

11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Explain – Paul explains that God provided leadership for His churches, gifts he calls them: 1) apostles, 2) prophets, 3) evangelists, 4) pastors and 5) teachers to equip God’s people to do His work and build up His church, the body of Christ.  This is to result in all being brought into unity in their faith and knowledge of God’s Son to mature in the Lord measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.  No longer immature, not deceived.  They were to speak the truth in love, growing to be more like Christ, each member of the body doing his/her special work to help the other members of the body grow.

Apply – We should seek the Holy Spirit to direct us to serve in churches where the Truth is taught and His work is done as directed by the Holy Spirit.  God provides leadership for His churches: 1) apostles, 2) prophets, 3) evangelists, 4) pastors and 5) teachers to equip God’s people to do His work and build up His church, the body of Christ. This is known as the five-fold ministry.  The Holy Spirit will lead us to serve so that all will be brought into unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son to mature in the Lord measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.  We will grow, no longer immature, not deceived.  We are to speak the truth in love, growing to be more like Christ, each member of the body doing his/her special work to help the other members of the body grow.  

Are you serving where the Holy Spirit has led you to serve?  If not, seek Him to direct you where you are to serve.  When you plant your roots where the Holy Spirit directs you will grow and flourish and produce fruit in your life and the lives of others for His glory.

Respond – Lord, I thank You for leading me to serve, for equipping me for Your calling, and thank You Lord for the spiritual leadership and fellowship that You have provided in my life.

HEAR Journaling Ephesians Chapter 2 

Highlight – Ephesians Chapter 2:4-10 New Living Translation

4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. 7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Explain – Paul explains that God, in His mercy, raised believers from the dead, that is from their sinful state, and they are united with Christ so that they could do the good things that He planned for them before they were born.

Apply – The same is true for us today, God, in His mercy, raised us from the dead, that is from our sinful state, and are now united with Christ so that we can do the good things that He planned for us before we were born.  We must abide in Him and faithfully and obediently follow the Holy Spirit as He guides us unto all Truth and the good works that He would have us do.

Respond – Lord, thank You Your mercy, raising me up from my sinful life and uniting me with You. I strive to abide in You and faithfully and obediently follow You, Holy Spirit, as You guide me unto all Truth to do the good works that You lead me to do.
