HEAR Journaling -  2 Corinthians Chapter 12

Highlight - 2 Corinthians 12 New Living Translation

5 That experience is worth boasting about, but I’m not going to do it. I will boast only about my weaknesses. 6 If I wanted to boast, I would be no fool in doing so, because I would be telling the truth. But I won’t do it, because I don’t want anyone to give me credit beyond what they can see in my life or hear in my message, 7 even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. 8 Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. 9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that the Lord has worked in his life to keep him humble, that he works best in his weakness.  He spoke about a thorn in his flesh, a messenger from Satan tormented him, but God rather than taking it away said that His grace was sufficient.  Paul’s reaction was to be glad and take pleasure in the weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles.  When he was weak, God made him strong.

Apply – We should examine ourselves; can we cheerfully accept God’s plan for our life despite any weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that life may bring?  I pray yes and amen!

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your Word, Your Truth.  I strive to abide in You and choose to accept Your plan for my life and will grow in Your power.

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I hope you will put up with a little more of my foolishness. Please bear with me. 2 For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself. I promised you as a pure bride[a] to one husband—Christ. 3 But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. 4 You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that they must be on guard to the schemes of the devil.  

Apply – We too must be on guard for temptations and apathy that could lead us off His path and plan for our lives.  We wrestle against spiritual powers that will attempt to seduce us into compromise.  We must put on the full armor of God, and maintain our active relationship through the Holy Spirit who will always provide a way out of every temptation.  We must be wise to follow His direction.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Respond – Lord help me be vigilant in spiritual warfare, to faithfully and obediently follow You in all I think, say and do.

3 We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4 [a]We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. 5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. 6 And after you have become fully obedient, we will punish everyone who remains disobedient.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that they do not wage war as humans do, but using God’s mighty weapons against the strongholds off human reasoning.  

Apply – The battle and the war belong to God, we can not fight spiritual battles with just our own power, but we must rely on the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, who provides spiritual gifts along with the wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction for our effective and successful operation.

Respond – Lord, I understand that the battle and the war belong to You.  I realize that I cannot fight spiritual battles with just my own power, but I must rely on Your power, who dwells in me, who provides me the necessary spiritual gifts along with the wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction for my effective and successful operation.  Help me Lord to be an effective and fruitful servant.

Highlight - 2 Corinthians 9 New Living Translation

6 Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”[c] 8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 9 As the Scriptures say, 

“They share freely and give generously to the poor.
    Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”[d]

10 For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity[e] in you.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that their willful giving would bring a bountiful harvest of increased resources in their lives to enable them to be even more generous.

Apply – Those of us that have accepted Jesus as Savior, and faithfully and obediently abide in Him, should decide in our hearts to give as the Holy Spirit gives us direction so that we can receive a bountiful harvest of increased resources in our lives enabling us to be even more generous.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your Word, Your Truth.  I strive to abide in You and have decided in my heart to give as You, Holy Spirit, gives me direction so that I can receive a bountiful harvest of increased resources in my life to be even more effective in Your good work.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth encouraging them to be cheerful and obedient givers to support the ministry.

Apply – We too should be faithfully obedient to the urging of the Holy Spirit, when directed to give in service or resources we should cheerfully give.

Respond – Lord, thank You for your generous provision in my life.  I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently, in all of my ways, including giving as You so direct, with a cheerful heart.

Highlight - 2 Corinthians 7 New Living Translation

7 Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that it was important for them to cleanse themselves from everything that could defile their body and spirit, to seek complete holiness because they feared the Lord.  This is a reverent fear out of the love and respect for He that saved them.

Apply – We too must repent from anything that comes before the Lord in our lives, and seek complete holiness by abiding in Him as He abides in us.  Seeking Him first thing daily and maintaining our active relationship with Him.

Respond – Lord, I repent from all things that may come before You in my life.  I seek complete holiness by abiding in You as You abide in me.  I strive to seek You first thing daily and maintaining our active relationship throughout the day.  Thank You Lord.

Highlight - 2 Corinthians 1 New Living Translation

6 As God’s partners,[a] we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it. 2 For God says,

“At just the right time, I heard you.
    On the day of salvation, I helped you.”[b]

Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that they should not accept God’s marvelous gift of salvation and ignore it.

Apply – We must not ignore Him today either.  There are active negative forces trying to separate us from our living relationship with God.  Paul and his followers were steadfast in their faith and responsibilities as should we.  The Lord continues to love us and grow us, we would be fools not to honor and abide in Him every moment of our lives.

Response – Lord, thank You for my relationship with You.  Help me as I strive to abide in You and with You ever moment of every day.

New Bodies

5 For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. 2 We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. 3 For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies.[a] 4 While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. 5 God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.

6 So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. 7 For we live by believing and not by seeing. 8 Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. 10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that their earthly bodies will be replaced by eternal bodies that God has prepared for them, guaranteed as He has given the Holy Spirit.  They were instructed to live by believing, not by seeing, with a goal of pleasing God in all they thought, said, and did, knowing that the final reward will be given as it is deserved by how they have lived in their earthly body.

Apply – This is so very true for us today.  Our earthly bodies will be replaced by eternal bodies, that God has prepared for us, guaranteed just as He has given us the Holy Spirit.  We must walk by faith and not by sight, with a goal of pleasing God in all we think, say, and do; knowing that the final reward will be given to us as we deserve by how faithfully and obediently, we have lived in our earthly body.

Respond – Lord, I so look forward to my new eternal body, that You have prepared for me.  I strive to walk by faith and not by sight, with a goal of pleasing You in all I think, say, and do; knowing that my final reward will be given to me as I deserve by how faithfully and obediently, I have lived in my earthly body.  Thank You Lord!

HEAR Journaling -  2 Corinthians Chapter 4

Highlight - 2 Corinthians 4 New Living Translation

16 That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are[e] being renewed every day. 17 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining when he and his fellow leaders are determined to stay the course that the Holy Spirit has directed them to follow, never giving up, being renewed every day.  He said that they would not focus on the troubles that they could see, but rather fixed their gaze on things not seen, the direction from the Holy Spirit.

Apply – In our current troubled times we too must not be distracted, but set our gaze on the Holy Spirit who leads us unto all Truth.  We know that we may face difficulties, perhaps persecution even death, but it is all for the glory of our Father in Heaven, through our salvation in Jesus Christ and our daily life, moment by moment abiding in the Holy Spirit as He leads us into His wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction.

Respond – Lord, help me not be distracted, but set my focus on You.  I know that I may face difficulties, perhaps persecution even death, but I gladly serve You as it is all for the glory of my Father in Heaven, through my salvation in Jesus Christ and my daily life, moment by moment abiding in You as You lead me  into Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction.

HEAR Journaling -  2 Corinthians Chapter 3

Highlight - 2 Corinthians 1 New Living Translation

12 Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech— 13 unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as [b]by the Spirit of the Lord.

Explain – Paul explained that unbelievers have a veil that blocks understanding of spiritual things.  When one turns to Christ as Savior, the veil is removed and that person can behold the glory of the Lord as they are being transformed into the same image as Christ from glory into glory by the Spirit of the Lord.

Apply – We should strive to abide in the Lord as He abides in us.  He will reveal the wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction that can only come from Him.  We should choose to operate in and with Him so as to be all we can be in Him.

Respond – Lord I strive to abide in You as You abide in me.  I seek Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction that can only come from You.  Help me Lord to be all I can be in You.
