HEAR Journaling - 2 Corinthians Chapter 2
Highlight - 2 Corinthians 2 New Living Translation
14 But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. 15 Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. 16 To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this? 17 You see, we are not like the many hucksters[a] who preach for personal profit. We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us.
Explain – Paul explains that all believers are captives of Christ to be used to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ like a sweet life-giving perfume. He says they are to preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority knowing that God is overwatching always.
Apply – We too must understand that God is with us, always watching and empowering us to bring the life-giving fragrance to the lost. Let us evaluate ourselves, are we truly faithfully obedient in Him in all of our thoughts, words, and deeds?
Respond – Lord, thank You for Your indwelling Spirit that watches over me, empowers and provides for me as I strive to faithfully and obediently abide in You and follow You always.

HEAR Journaling - 2 Corinthians Chapter 1
Highlight - 2 Corinthians 1 New Living Translation
3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 5 For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. 6 Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. 7 We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us. 8 We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters,[b] about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. 9 In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. 10 And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. 11 And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that God would comfort them through any suffering. He encouraged them to follow the example of Paul and those serving with him to stop relying on themselves and to rely only on God.
Apply – Those of us that have accepted Jesus as Savior, and faithfully and obediently abide in Him, will endure with Him and rely on Him until we see Him at our passing or His coming, either way it will be a glorious day. We must endure to the end.
Matthew 24:13 ESV
But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Respond – Lord, thank You for saving me, I strive to abide in You, to put my full confidence in You and not myself, to endure to the end in the joy and fulfillment that can only come in a life in You.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 16
Highlight - 1 Corinthians 16 New Living Translation
13 Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous.[c] Be strong. 14 And do everything with love. 15 You know that Stephanas and his household were the first of the harvest of believers in Greece,[d] and they are spending their lives in service to God’s people. I urge you, dear brothers and sisters,[e] 16 to submit to them and others like them who serve with such devotion. 17 I am very glad that Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus have come here. They have been providing the help you weren’t here to give me. 18 They have been a wonderful encouragement to me, as they have been to you. You must show your appreciation to all who serve so well.
Explain – Paul instructs the believers in Corinth to be on guard, stand firm in the faith, be strong, and do everything with love. He also speaks about believers that are serving well, dedicating their lives to the service of the Lord Jesus and instructs them to show their appreciation to all that serve well.
Apply – We also should be on guard, stand firm in the faith, be strong, and do everything with love. We must dedicate our own lives to the Lord Jesus Christ and show appreciation to all that serve well.
Respond – Lord, thank You for my salvation, for the new life that You have provided me. Thank You for Your servants that serve well. Please show me how I can serve You better and how I can show appreciation for others that serve well.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 15
Highlight - 1 Corinthians 15 New King James Version
15 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by [a]Cephas, then by the twelve. 6 After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have [b]fallen asleep. 7 After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. 8 Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 11 Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
Explain – Paul explains the gospel in a few sentences and also explains the grace of God that would make him an apostle after persecuting believers like he did before his Damascus road experience.
Apply – Jesus made a way for each of us to be saved, though His death, burial, and resurrection He provided a way for us to be saved and He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us to guide and empower us to serve Him as He did Paul.
Respond – Lord, thank You for saving me, for You, Holy Spirit, who indwells me providing wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction. Help me to be all that I can be in You. Me and my house, all my generations in Jesus name, Amen.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 14
Highlight - 1 Corinthians 14 New Living Translation
14 Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. 2 For if you have the ability to speak in tongues,[a] you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit,[b] but it will all be mysterious.3 But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. 4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.
…20 Dear brothers and sisters, don’t be childish in your understanding of these things. Be innocent as babies when it comes to evil, but be mature in understanding matters of this kind. 21 It is written in the Scriptures[f]:
“I will speak to my own people through strange languages and through the lips of foreigners. But even then, they will not listen to me,”[g] says the Lord.
Explain – Paul explains that there are different spiritual gifts and emphasizes the gift of prophesy. Prophesy is a gift where one person hears from God and delivers that message to another person or group of people. The Bible itself is a collection of prophesy. There is also an office of a “Prophet” who is the prophet for a congregation, but there are prophets that deliver messages as the Holy Spirit directs. Paul was directing the believers in Corinth to seek to prophesy. He also cautioned them not to be childish in their understanding but to seek mature understanding of spiritual gifts.
Apply – There is much misinformation, confusion, and controversy with spiritual gifts, particularly with speaking in tongues and prophesy. This is no mystery; the enemy does not want God’s people to know about and operate in God’s spiritual gifts. Per Pauls’ direction, let us not be childish in our understanding. There are at least seven different kinds of spiritual tongues and also other prophetical giftings to learn about. We should seek God for His truth and not rely on our own misunderstandings. Wouldn’t it be tragic to miss out on a special spiritual gifting from God because we believed some lie?
Respond – Lord, please help me gain wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and Your instruction concerning Your spiritual gifts, and in particular the spiritual gifts that You have imparted to me, so that I may be all I can be in You for Your glory and honor. I rebuke the liar and deceiver that will try to undermine my effectiveness in You.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 13
Highlight - 1 Corinthians 13 New Living Translation
4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
Explain – Paul explains what true love is, this word “love” in the original Greek is the word agape, which is most important when we understand the different Greek words for love used in the bible and their distinct meanings:
Biblical Greek words for Love - There are a few Greek words for love, as the Greek language distinguishes how the word is used. Ancient Greek has four distinct words for love: agápe, éros, philía, and storgē.
Agápe (ἀγάπη agápē[1]) means love in a "spiritual" sense. Agape is used in the biblical passage known as the "love chapter," 1 Corinthians 13, and is described there and throughout the New Testament as sacrificial and spiritual love. Jesus demonstrated agape love when He gave His life for us. John 3:16 speaks of agape love.
Éros (ἔρως érōs[3]) is "physical" passionate love, with sensual desire and longing. Romantic, pure emotion without the balance of logic. "Love at first sight". The Mo dern Greek word "erotas" means "intimate love;" however, eros does not have to be sexual in nature.[citation needed] Eros can be interpreted[by whom?] as a love for someone whom you love more than the philia, love of friendship.
Philia (φιλία philía[4]) is "mental" love. It means affectionate regard or friendship in both ancient and modern Greek. This type of love has give and take. It is a dispassionate virtuous love, a concept developed by Aristotle. It includes loyalty to friends, family, and community, and requires virtue, equality, and familiarity. In ancient texts, philos denoted a general type of love, used for love between family, between friends, a desire or enjoyment of an activity, as well as between lovers.
Storge (στοργή storgē[5]) means "affection" in ancient and modern Greek. It is natural affection, like that felt by parents for offspring. Rarely used in ancient works, and then almost exclusively as a descriptor of relationships within the family. It is also known to express mere acceptance or putting up with situations, as in "loving" the tyrant.
Apply – We should seek God and ask Him to show us how to really love Him and others with agape love that is only possible through a live in Him and with Him.
Respond – Lord, please help me to learn to love with Your agape love.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 12
Highlight - 1 Corinthians 12 New Living Translation
12 Now, dear brothers and sisters,[a] regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. 2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. 7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
… 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
Explain – Paul explains that God through the Holy Spirit distributes special abilities, otherwise known as spiritual gifts, to those that He wishes for His purpose.
Apply – We should seek God, asking Him to show us what special spiritual gifts He has given us and how and when we are to use these wonderful gifts from God. This is a precious topic we should all discuss with our Lord. We should not fear to operate in the spiritual gifts that He has provided for His work and glory.
Respond – Lord, thank You for all You are and all You do. Lord please reveal to me what special gifts You have provided to me, show me how and when I should use these gifts for Your glory. I pray for all believers to seek Your knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and instruction concerning their own special spiritual giftings. Amen.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 11
Highlight - 1 Corinthians 11 New Living Translation
27 So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against[g] the body and blood of the Lord. 28 That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. 29 For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ,[h] you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.
31 But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way. 32 Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Corinth that they must examine themselves and ensure they are honoring God with a contrite and pure heart with no unconfessed sin, no unforgiveness toward anyone. Paul states that many of them were sick and some had died because of their unfaithfulness and unforgiveness.
Apply – We also must live clean, faithful, and obedient lives through the Holy Spirit. God cannot honor our prayer if we are living a sinful, unrepentant, or unforgiving life.
Ephesians 4:30 New Living Translation 30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own,[a] guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.
Matthew 5:23-24 New Living Translation 23 “So if you are presenting a sacrifice[a] at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, 24 leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.
Mark 11:25 New Living Translation 25But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.[a]”
Respond – Lord, help me to search myself for any unrighteousness, forgive me Lord as I faithfully and obediently follow You.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 10
Highlight - 1 Corinthians 10 New Living Translation
12 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
Explain – Paul explained to the believers in Corinth that they must be cautious not to fall, to resist the temptations in their lives that would lead to destruction. God would provide a way out for every temptation.
Apply – This is still applicable today, our lives are filled with temptations from all kinds of ways, each designed to snare us from being all we can be in Christ. We must run the good race by never wavering, always abiding in the Holy Spirit as He abides in us, to seek Him whenever temptation comes and following His instruction to overcome the attacks. We must continually wear the armor or God, remembering that the shield of faith will quench every attack of our enemy.
Respond – Lord, thank You for this Word of warning and instruction. I strive to abide in You as You abide in me. I will diligently follow You and will seek Your instruction when temptation comes, for Your glory.
