HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 1
Highlight - 1 Corinthians 1 New Living Translation
4 I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus.5 Through him, God has enriched your church in every way—with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge. 6 This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true. 7 Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. 9 God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that they have every spiritual gift they need as they serve the Lord until His return. He promises that the Lord will keep them strong to the end, being free of all blame.
Apply – Those of us that have accepted Jesus as Savior, and faithfully and obediently abide in Him, will endure with Him until we see Him at our passing or His coming, either way it will be a glorious day. We must endure to the end.
Matthew 24:13 ESV
But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Respond – Lord, thank You for saving me, I strive to abide in You to endure to the end in the joy and fulfillment that can only come in a life in You.

Paul’s Final Instructions
17 And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. 18 Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people. 19 But everyone knows that you are obedient to the Lord. This makes me very happy. I want you to be wise in doing right and to stay innocent of any wrong. 20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus[f] be with you.
Explain - Paul makes one last appeal to the believers to watch out for people that cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching contrary doctrine. He says to stay away from them.
Apply - We too should heed Paul’s warning to watch out for any people that cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching doctrine contrary to the Word of God. We should not waste energy trying to correct them, but to stay away from them.
Respond- I seek too to heed Paul’s warning to watch out for any people that cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching doctrine contrary to the Word of God. I will strive to abide in You, Holy Spirit, as You will lead me to the Truth and never lead me to sin.

Living to Please Others
15 We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves. 2 We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord. 3 For even Christ didn’t live to please himself. As the Scriptures say, “The insults of those who insult you, O God, have fallen on me.”[a]4 Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.
Explain – Paul explains that believers should not live to please themselves, but should be considerate of others and help them to do what is right and build them up in the Lord. Believers should wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.
Apply – Still very true today, we too should not live to please ourselves, but we should be considerate of others and help them to do what is right and build them up in the Lord. We should wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.
Respond - Help me Lord not to be focused on myself, but to be considerate of others and help them to do what is right and build them up in You, Lord. Help me to wait patiently for Your promises to be fulfilled.

HEAR Journaling Romans Chapter 14
Highlight – Romans Chapter 14 New Living Translation
8 If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 Christ died and rose again for this very purpose—to be Lord both of the living and of the dead.
10 So why do you condemn another believer[a]? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For the Scriptures say,
“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to God.[b]’”
12 Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God. 13 So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.
Explain - Paul encourages believers to focus on their own relationship with the Lord and not condemn another believer. Each believer will give a personal account to God, so it is best to focus on oneself to ensure they will not cause others to stumble.
Apply - We too should focus on our own relationship with the Lord and not condemn others. Each of us will give a personal account to God, so it is best for us to focus on our personal relationship with the Lord, obediently following the Holy Spirit to ensure we will not cause others to stumble.
Respond - Lord, help me focus on our relationship and not condemn others. I know that I will one day give my personal account to You. I seek to focus on my personal relationship with You, Faithfully and obediently following You, Holy Spirit, to ensure we will not cause others to stumble.

HEAR Journaling Romans Chapter 13
Highlight – Romans Chapter 13 New Living Translation
11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. 13 Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.
Explain - Paul explains that the time is short, that believers must live decent lives for all to see, and to clothe themselves in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ giving no thought about indulging evil desires.
Apply - We too must live decent lives for all to see, wrapping ourselves in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ giving no thought about indulging evil desires. When we acknowledge Jesus in our life we will not be led to sin, but to live effective, productive, and fruitful lives in the Lord.
Respond - I strive to live a decent life for all to see, wrapping myself in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ giving no thought about indulging any evil desires. I know Lord, that when I abide in You as You abide in me, I will not be led to sin, but to live an effective, productive, and fruitful life in You, Lord.

HEAR Journaling Romans Chapter 12
Highlight – Romans 12:1-2 New Living Translation
A Living Sacrifice to God
12 And so, dear brothers and sisters,[a] I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.[b]2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Explain – Paul explains that believers should give their bodies as a living sacrifice to God, to be a living and holy sacrifice that He will find acceptable. Then God can transform them into new people by changing the way they think, and they will know God’s will for them.
Apply - We too should give our bodies as a living sacrifice to God, to be a living and holy sacrifice that He will find acceptable. We must let Him transform us to be the people that He would have us be, with minds of Christ about His business.
Respond – Lord, I freely give my body as a living sacrifice to You, to be a living and holy sacrifice that You will find acceptable. I desire to let You transform me to be the man that You want me to become, with a mind of Christ, about Your business.

HEAR Journaling Romans Chapter 11
Highlight - Romans 11:17-22 New Living Translation
17 But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree—some of the people of Israel—have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree. 18 But you must not brag about being grafted in to replace the branches that were broken off. You are just a branch, not the root. 19 “Well,” you may say, “those branches were broken off to make room for me.” 20 Yes, but remember—those branches were broken off because they didn’t believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen. 21 For if God did not spare the original branches, he won’t[f] spare you either.
22 Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off.
Explain – Paul explains how the people that believe and are faithful to Christ are grafted into the tree of Abraham. Believers receive all the blessings and promises of the descendants of Abraham because they are grafted into the family tree because of their faith in Jesus Christ. Jews who reject Jesus are removed from the blessings and promises of Abraham due to their unbelief. Note Paul’s warning, if believers stop trusting in Jesus Christ they can also be cut off.
Apply - Thank God for His provision of salvation. He will continue to bless and empower His people. We must do our part, seek God, abide in Him, faithfully and obediently follow Him, endure to the end. Jesus said the same in Matthew Chapter 24:
Matthew 24:13 NLT13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Respond - Lord help me as I seek to abide in You, to faithfully and obediently follow you enduring to the end. Lord help me be fruitful in Your Good works, in Jesus name. Amen.

HEAR Journaling Romans Chapter 10
Highlight - Romans 10:13-18 New Living Translation
13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”[g]
14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”[h]
16 But not everyone welcomes the Good News, for Isaiah the prophet said, “Lord, who has believed our message?”[i] 17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. 18 But I ask, have the people of Israel actually heard the message? Yes, they have:
“The message has gone throughout the earth, and the words to all the world.”[j]
Explain – Paul explains that anyone that calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. He explains further that believers must take the gospel to those that do no know so they too may be saved. Faith comes from hearing and hearing the Good News, the Gospel, about Jesus Christ.
Apply – We must follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit to deliver the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those that do know yet know Him. Faith comes through hearing and hearing by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Respond – Lord I will strive to follow Your guidance to deliver the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those that do know yet know You. I know that faith comes through hearing and hearing by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank You Lord for the privilege of delivering Your Good News.

HEAR Journaling Romans Chapter 9
Highlight - Romans 9:30-33 New Living Translation
30 What does all this mean? Even though the Gentiles were not trying to follow God’s standards, they were made right with God. And it was by faith that this took place. 31 But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded. 32 Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law[o] instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path. 33 God warned them of this in the Scriptures when he said,
“I am placing a stone in Jerusalem[p] that makes people stumble,
a rock that makes them fall.
But anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”[q]
Explain - Paul explains that Gentiles found Jesus Christ as savior through faith, but Jews were failing to find God, because of their focus on the law rather than putting their faith in Him. Struggling to keep the law will never save, only the grace of Jesus Christ through faith.
Apply - We too must not struggle with sin in our own power, but submit to the Lord Jesus Christ through faith, then abide with Him as He abides with us and follow His leading as He will never lead us to sin, but only to fruitful lives in Him.
Respond - Lord, help me remember not to struggle with sin in my own power, but to submit to You every moment of every day through faith. I will strive to abide with You as You abide with me. I will strive to follow Your leading as I know You will never lead me to sin, but only to a fruitful life in You.
