HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 27
Highlight - Acts 27 New Living Translation
10 “Men,” he said, “I believe there is trouble ahead if we go on—shipwreck, loss of cargo, and danger to our lives as well.” 11 But the officer in charge of the prisoners listened more to the ship’s captain and the owner than to Paul.12 And since Fair Havens was an exposed harbor—a poor place to spend the winter—most of the crew wanted to go on to Phoenix, farther up the coast of Crete, and spend the winter there. Phoenix was a good harbor with only a southwest and northwest exposure.
…21 No one had eaten for a long time. Finally, Paul called the crew together and said, “Men, you should have listened to me in the first place and not left Crete. You would have avoided all this damage and loss. 22 But take courage! None of you will lose your lives, even though the ship will go down. 23 For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me, 24 and he said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What’s more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.’ 25 So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said. 26 But we will be shipwrecked on an island.”
Explain – In verse 10 Paul is speaking to the ship’s officers warning of a possible shipwreck, but they would not listen. Later in verse 21 Paul talks to the ship’s crew about the message from an angel of the Lord warning of the coming shipwreck. Notice the timing of the message, it was just before the wreck was to take place.
Apply – Often God will provide a sign, even a message from an angel in a dream or vision, but notice the timing of the message in Acts Chapter 27, it was just before the wreck was to take place. God gives us the information we need when we need it, but it is up to us to listen and to obediently follow His instructions.
Respond – Lord help me to have an open and clear mind to receive and apply Your instruction, and to have patience to wait for Your message as I know it will come just at the right time, every time.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 26
Highlight - Acts 26 New Living Translation
[Paul shared his testimony with Festus the governor, King Agrippa and the kin’s sister Bernice]
24 Suddenly, Festus shouted, “Paul, you are insane. Too much study has made you crazy!”
25 But Paul replied, “I am not insane, Most Excellent Festus. What I am saying is the sober truth. 26 And King Agrippa knows about these things. I speak boldly, for I am sure these events are all familiar to him, for they were not done in a corner! 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do—” 28 Agrippa interrupted him. “Do you think you can persuade me to become a Christian so quickly?”[f] 29 Paul replied, “Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that both you and everyone here in this audience might become the same as I am, except for these chains.” 30 Then the king, the governor, Bernice, and all the others stood and left. 31 As they went out, they talked it over and agreed, “This man hasn’t done anything to deserve death or imprisonment.” 32 And Agrippa said to Festus, “He could have been set free if he hadn’t appealed to Caesar.”
Explain – Paul took advantage of every opportunity to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ despite his own personal circumstances. Paul shared his testimony with Governor Festus, King Agrippa, and the King’s sister Bernice. Festus called Paul insane, King Agrippa stated,” Do you think you can persuade me to become a Christian so quickly?”. There is no record of Bernice’s response or the response of anyone else present.
Apply – Personal circumstances can become distractions to what the Lord may call us to do. Paul is a firm example of what is possible when we live seriously for the Lord. May we obediently follow the Holy Spirit to His good works.
Respond – Lord thank You for Your Word, Your loving guidance. Help me to obediently follow You.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 25
Highlight - Acts 25 New Living Translation
Paul Appears before Festus
25 Three days after Festus arrived in Caesarea to take over his new responsibilities, he left for Jerusalem,2 where the leading priests and other Jewish leaders met with him and made their accusations against Paul. 3 They asked Festus as a favor to transfer Paul to Jerusalem (planning to ambush and kill him on the way). 4 But Festus replied that Paul was at Caesarea and he himself would be returning there soon. 5 So he said, “Those of you in authority can return with me. If Paul has done anything wrong, you can make your accusations.”
6 About eight or ten days later Festus returned to Caesarea, and on the following day he took his seat in court and ordered that Paul be brought in. 7 When Paul arrived, the Jewish leaders from Jerusalem gathered around and made many serious accusations they couldn’t prove.
8 Paul denied the charges. “I am not guilty of any crime against the Jewish laws or the Temple or the Roman government,” he said.
9 Then Festus, wanting to please the Jews, asked him, “Are you willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there?”
10 But Paul replied, “No! This is the official Roman court, so I ought to be tried right here. You know very well I am not guilty of harming the Jews. 11 If I have done something worthy of death, I don’t refuse to die. But if I am innocent, no one has a right to turn me over to these men to kill me. I appeal to Caesar!”
Explain – Paul faithfully followed the leading of the Holy Spirit. He was with Paul as Paul was seen by Jewish and Roman leadership. Paul confounds them with their own laws by appealing to Cesar which will of course take him to Rome to meet with other leaders and spread the Gospel along the way as well as continue to send his epistles, letters, to churches that he had planted. God clearly had a divine plan in it all.
Apply – We should yield ourselves to the leading of the Holy Spirit who Jesus promises will lead us unto all Truth. Things may appear tenuous but God is in control of our lives just as He was with Paul. We should not waiver in our faith by diligently follow Him wherever He leads.
Respond – Lord, here I am, I strive to diligently follow You at all times.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 24
Highlight - Acts 24 New Living Translation
22 At that point Felix, who was quite familiar with the Way, adjourned the hearing and said, “Wait until Lysias, the garrison commander, arrives. Then I will decide the case.” 23 He ordered an officer[d] to keep Paul in custody but to give him some freedom and allow his friends to visit him and take care of his needs.24 A few days later Felix came back with his wife, Drusilla, who was Jewish. Sending for Paul, they listened as he told them about faith in Christ Jesus. 25 As he reasoned with them about righteousness and self-control and the coming day of judgment, Felix became frightened. “Go away for now,” he replied. “When it is more convenient, I’ll call for you again.” 26 He also hoped that Paul would bribe him, so he sent for him quite often and talked with him.
27 After two years went by in this way, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And because Felix wanted to gain favor with the Jewish people, he left Paul in prison.
Explain – Paul shared the Way, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, with Felix and his wife Drusilla, but apparently, they both rejected salvation and held Paul in prison for two more years hoping for a bribe until Felix was succeeded. How foolish of them to seek a bribe when they could have received salvation. Paul was steadfast in his faithfulness and determination to God’s service despite all.
Apply – We should be wise and not follow the ways of the world but be faithful and dedicated as was Paul.
Respond – Lord help me to trust, honor and obey You in all I think, say and do.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 23
Highlight - Acts 23 New Living Translation
11 That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said, “Be encouraged, Paul. Just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem, you must preach the Good News in Rome as well.”
…16 But Paul’s nephew—his sister’s son—heard of their plan and went to the fortress and told Paul. 17 Paul called for one of the Roman officers[e] and said, “Take this young man to the commander. He has something important to tell him.”
…20 Paul’s nephew told him, “Some Jews are going to ask you to bring Paul before the high council tomorrow, pretending they want to get some more information. 21 But don’t do it! There are more than forty men hiding along the way ready to ambush him. They have vowed not to eat or drink anything until they have killed him. They are ready now, just waiting for your consent.”
…31 So that night, as ordered, the soldiers took Paul as far as Antipatris. 32 They returned to the fortress the next morning, while the mounted troops took him on to Caesarea. 33 When they arrived in Caesarea, they presented Paul and the letter to Governor Felix. 34 He read it and then asked Paul what province he was from. “Cilicia,” Paul answered. 35 “I will hear your case myself when your accusers arrive,” the governor told him. Then the governor ordered him kept in the prison at Herod’s headquarters.[f]
Explain – God used Paul, his nephew, and the Roman Army to get him in front of many rulers both Jewish and Roman alike to hear the Gospel from Paul.
Apply – We may be led in a way that seems wrong or unfair, but we must remember that as long as we are faithful to God, He will be faithful to us. His plan for our life may well not match what we think it should be, but He knows best. We can live an exciting life full of joy and fruit of the Spirit when we are faithful.
Respond- Lord, help me to be accepting of the path You have for me to take. May my life be fruitful in service to You.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 22
Explain – Paul preached his testimony including when he argued with God saying that he was not worthy to be His servant. The Lord told him to go to the Gentiles and he did what the Lord directed the rest of his life on Earth.
Apply – When God calls us, He may well take us out of our comfort zone and lead us to some unusual places to some unusual people. God is with us; He will provide the provisions and protection that we need to be effective servants for Him. We must abide in Him as He abides in us, faithfully and obediently follow Him the rest of our lives on Earth.

Highlight – Acts 22 New Living Translation17 “After I returned to Jerusalem, I was praying in the Temple and fell into a trance. 18 I saw a vision of Jesus[c] saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem, for the people here won’t accept your testimony about me.’ 19 “‘But Lord,’ I argued, ‘they certainly know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you. 20 And I was in complete agreement when your witness Stephen was killed. I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned him.’ 21 “But the Lord said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles!’”
HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 21
Highlight - Acts 21 New Living Translation
27 The seven days were almost ended when some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul in the Temple and roused a mob against him. They grabbed him, 28 yelling, “Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who preaches against our people everywhere and tells everybody to disobey the Jewish laws. He speaks against the Temple—and even defiles this holy place by bringing in Gentiles.[d]” 29 (For earlier that day they had seen him in the city with Trophimus, a Gentile from Ephesus,[e] and they assumed Paul had taken him into the Temple.)
30 The whole city was rocked by these accusations, and a great riot followed. Paul was grabbed and dragged out of the Temple, and immediately the gates were closed behind him. 31 As they were trying to kill him, word reached the commander of the Roman regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 He immediately called out his soldiers and officers[f] and ran down among the crowd. When the mob saw the commander and the troops coming, they stopped beating Paul.
33 Then the commander arrested him and ordered him bound with two chains. He asked the crowd who he was and what he had done. 34 Some shouted one thing and some another. Since he couldn’t find out the truth in all the uproar and confusion, he ordered that Paul be taken to the fortress. 35 As Paul reached the stairs, the mob grew so violent the soldiers had to lift him to their shoulders to protect him. 36 And the crowd followed behind, shouting, “Kill him, kill him!”
Paul Speaks to the Crowd
37 As Paul was about to be taken inside, he said to the commander, “May I have a word with you?”
“Do you know Greek?” the commander asked, surprised. 38 “Aren’t you the Egyptian who led a rebellion some time ago and took 4,000 members of the Assassins out into the desert?”
39 “No,” Paul replied, “I am a Jew and a citizen of Tarsus in Cilicia, which is an important city. Please, let me talk to these people.” 40 The commander agreed, so Paul stood on the stairs and motioned to the people to be quiet. Soon a deep silence enveloped the crowd, and he addressed them in their own language, Aramaic.[g]
Explain – In this fascinating story Paul is threatened with his life by a mob of Jews that was stirred up by Jews from Asia. God uses the Roman army to protect Paul from death. Also note that Paul spoke Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic languages, adapting as required for the audience he addressed. God provided every provision and protection for Paul to be an effective servant.
Apply – Paul did not shirk from his assignments from God even at the threat of losing his life. God protected him through mobs, shipwrecks, snake bites, stoning, etc. until he was finally martyred. God will provide and protect us in our assignments as well. We need not fear whatever may come when we are in the middle of God’s will for our lives.
Respond – Lord, help me be a bold and effective servant for You and Your glory.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 20
Highlight - Acts 20 New Living Translation
16 Paul had decided to sail on past Ephesus, for he didn’t want to spend any more time in the province of Asia. He was hurrying to get to Jerusalem, if possible, in time for the Festival of Pentecost. 17 But when we landed at Miletus, he sent a message to the elders of the church at Ephesus, asking them to come and meet him.
18 When they arrived he declared, “You know that from the day I set foot in the province of Asia until now 19 I have done the Lord’s work humbly and with many tears. I have endured the trials that came to me from the plots of the Jews. 20 I never shrank back from telling you what you needed to hear, either publicly or in your homes. 21 I have had one message for Jews and Greeks alike—the necessity of repenting from sin and turning to God, and of having faith in our Lord Jesus. 22 “And now I am bound by the Spirit[f] to go to Jerusalem. I don’t know what awaits me, 23 except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead. 24 But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.
Explain – Paul lived a wholly dedicated life in service to God, being led by the Holy Spirit ever since his Damascus Road experience. He never wavered despite the hardships he experienced. In verse 22 he stated that he was bound to go to Jerusalem even though he knew it would bring jail and suffering. We now know that Paul wrote many letters from those jails to believers that became the prison epistles: Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon, that have blessed believers for close to 2000 years.
Apply – In our worldly perspective we may think it would have been better for Paul to serve the churches and avoid jail, however God had a plan for Paul to bring the Good News of the Gospel across the region and eventually to Rome where Christianity would bloom and blossom all around the world.
We too must dedicate ourselves to a live of service in Christ, we will be blessed and through the guiding of the Holy Spirit we will achieve great things in His name.
Respond – Lord, here am I, help me to be all that I can be in You, not to be distracted nor discouraged but to serve with joy!

Highlight - Acts 19 New Living Translation
11 God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles. 12 When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled.
Explain – God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles such that handkerchiefs and aprons that he had touched would heal the sick.
Apply - Paul was completely surrendered to the will of God. We too should surrender to God daily, obediently, and faithfully follow Him and He will impart powers and resources for our work as well.
Respond – Lord help me to be all I can be in You and for You, me and my house and all my generations.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 18
Highlight - Acts 18 New Living Translation
18 Paul stayed in Corinth for some time after that, then said good-bye to the brothers and sisters[d] and went to nearby Cenchrea. There he shaved his head according to Jewish custom, marking the end of a vow. Then he set sail for Syria, taking Priscilla and Aquila with him.
19 They stopped first at the port of Ephesus, where Paul left the others behind. While he was there, he went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews. 20 They asked him to stay longer, but he declined. 21 As he left, however, he said, “I will come back later,[e] God willing.” Then he set sail from Ephesus. 22 The next stop was at the port of Caesarea. From there he went up and visited the church at Jerusalem[f] and then went back to Antioch.
23 After spending some time in Antioch, Paul went back through Galatia and Phrygia, visiting and strengthening all the believers.[g]
Explain – Paul was about to go upon a journey to many places. He shaved his head according to Jewish custom making the end of a vow. God was instructing Paul to put off his old ways and prepare for a new work in his life. Paul was preparing himself to be accepted and received in the areas that he was about to journey to. Paul as we know went on to do great and mighty works for God’s kingdom.
Apply – The application for us is to seek God to see if there is any old custom, habit, or tradition that we need to end, any new things that we need to take up to prepare ourselves for His glory. If He is truly our Lord and Savior, then we need to follow Him and His directions accordingly. If we aren’t, then we do need to put away the desires of the old and take up our cross and diligently and faithfully follow Him so we will be effective in His works through us.
Respond – Lord, show me what I must change, help me to be all that I can be in You and for You.
