Highlight - Acts 17 New Living Translation

10 That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. 12 As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.

Explain – The people of Berea searched the scriptures to ensure that what was being taught by Paul and Silas was the truth.

Apply – We too should study the Word of God as led by the Holy Spirit so that we are well grounded in His Truth. 

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your Truth, for Your Word, and for my life in and with You.

HEAR Journaling -  Acts Chapter 16

Highlight - Acts 16 New Living Translation

22 A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. 23 They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. 24 So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks. 25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! 27 The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted to him, “Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!”  29 The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”  31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” 32 And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household. 33 Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized. 34 He brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God.

Explain – Paul and Silas were bound in chains in the innermost dungeon after being severely beaten.  Their response was to pray and sing hymns.  This behavior clearly had an impact on the jailer.  God moved and all the chains fell off and the doors were opened.  The great news is that the jailer and his whole household were saved.

Apply – Life may bring us to our own personal dungeon after being severely beaten.  We too should pray and sing hymns regularly so as not to fall into the temptation of self-pity or discouragement.  If God is with us who can be against us…. No one can, but we can lose our faith if we do not maintain our relationship with God.

Respond – Lord, I thank You for Your provision in my life.  I faithfully and obediently follow You to resist any temptation to draw me astray.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 15

Highlight - Acts 15 New Living Translation

4 When they arrived in Jerusalem, Barnabas and Paul were welcomed by the whole church, including the apostles and elders. They reported everything God had done through them. 5 But then some of the believers who belonged to the sect of the Pharisees stood up and insisted, “The Gentile converts must be circumcised and required to follow the law of Moses.” 6 So the apostles and elders met together to resolve this issue. 7 At the meeting, after a long discussion, Peter stood and addressed them as follows: “Brothers, you all know that God chose me from among you some time ago to preach to the Gentiles so that they could hear the Good News and believe. 8 God knows people’s hearts, and he confirmed that he accepts Gentiles by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he did to us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, for he cleansed their hearts through faith. 10 So why are you now challenging God by burdening the Gentile believers[b] with a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors were able to bear? 11 We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus.”

Explain – Some believers that were Pharisees believed that all converts should live under Mosaic Law.  Peter instructed that new converts are not required to follow Mosaic Law, but they are saved by grace of Jesus Christ alone.  There have been different sects within Christianity that have added rules to members of their sect.  Jesus had explained this as shown.

Romans 12:2 ESV  

Ephesians 4:30 ESV  

Apply – The application here is clear, we are to be led of the Holy Spirit that will lead us unto all Truth.  We are to live according to the Holy Spirit not being conformed to this word but transformed by the renewing of our minds.  In doing so we will not grieve the Holy Spirit but live in Him and 

Galatians 5:16-18 ESV But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Respond – Lord, I choose to abide in You, obediently and faithfully follow You always.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 14

Highlight – Acts 14 New Living Translation

14 The same thing happened in Iconium.[a] Paul and Barnabas went to the Jewish synagogue and preached with such power that a great number of both Jews and Greeks became believers. 2 Some of the Jews, however, spurned God’s message and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas. 3 But the apostles stayed there a long time, preaching boldly about the grace of the Lord. And the Lord proved their message was true by giving them power to do miraculous signs and wonders. 4 But the people of the town were divided in their opinion about them. Some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.

…19 Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowds to their side. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, thinking he was dead. 20 But as the believers[c] gathered around him, he got up and went back into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

Explain – The power of God was with Paul and Barnabas in their ministry journey.  They performed many signs and wonders and many were saved, but there were evil forces against them convincing the people to stone Paul and drag him out of town.  Paul got up and went back in town.  Clearly God was with them.

Apply – God will do the same for us if we will deny our own will and faithfully and obediently follow His direction. 

Respond – Lord, I honor You and strive to be obediently faithful to You.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 13

Highlight - Acts 13 New Living Translation

44 The following week almost the entire city turned out to hear them preach the word of the Lord. 45 But when some of the Jews saw the crowds, they were jealous; so they slandered Paul and argued against whatever he said. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and declared, “It was necessary that we first preach the word of God to you Jews. But since you have rejected it and judged yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we will offer it to the Gentiles. 47 For the Lord gave us this command when he said,

‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles,    to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.’[m]” [Isaiah 49:6]

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were very glad and thanked the Lord for his message; and all who were chosen for eternal life became believers. 49 So the Lord’s message spread throughout that region.

50 Then the Jews stirred up the influential religious women and the leaders of the city, and they incited a mob against Paul and Barnabas and ran them out of town. 51 So they shook the dust from their feet as a sign of rejection and went to the town of Iconium. 52 And the believers[n] were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Explain – God has had His plan since the foundation of the world.  The Jewish leadership rejected the Gospel of Jesus Christ, so the Gospel was preached and received by Gentiles.  Verse 40 says “all who were chosen for eternal life became believers”.  This is also referenced in Romans 8:30.

30 And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.

Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

Apply – We must yield to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and not follow the way to destruction of the Jewish leadership.  We were chosen before the foundation of the world to make the choice to follow Him as seen in the Gospel of John:

John 3:16-18 16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave[g] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. 18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.

You are chosen by Him, so choose Him today and don’t ever let go!

Respond – Thank You Lord for choosing me, and I thank You for choosing You.  I strive to follow You obediently and faithfully always.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 12

Highlight – Acts Chapter 12 New Living Translation

James Is Killed and Peter Is Imprisoned

12 About that time King Herod Agrippa[a] began to persecute some believers in the church. 2 He had the apostle James (John’s brother) killed with a sword. 3 When Herod saw how much this pleased the Jewish people, he also arrested Peter. (This took place during the Passover celebration.[b]) 4 Then he imprisoned him, placing him under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring Peter out for public trial after the Passover.5 But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him.

6 The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate. 7 Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists. 8 Then the angel told him, “Get dressed and put on your sandals.” And he did. “Now put on your coat and follow me,” the angel ordered.

9 So Peter left the cell, following the angel. But all the time he thought it was a vision. He didn’t realize it was actually happening. 10 They passed the first and second guard posts and came to the iron gate leading to the city, and this opened for them all by itself. So they passed through and started walking down the street, and then the angel suddenly left him.

11 Peter finally came to his senses. “It’s really true!” he said. “The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what the Jewish leaders[c] had planned to do to me!”

Explain – This is a fascinating story of Peter’s recue from a very secure prison, but we also learn the John’s brother James was killed.  This begs the question, why did God save Peter, but yet let James be killed?  

The answer of course is we don’t know why other than God’s ways are not our ways and He will do as He wants to do.  James time was complete and he was able to ascend to heaven whereas Peter still had work to do.

Apply  - We should not expend much time trying to understand God’s ways.  He will reveal what He wants us to know at the right time.  We need to obediently follow Him whether we understand or not.

Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV 

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction that I will strive to follow for Your purpose.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 11

Highlight - Acts 11 New Living Translation

19 Meanwhile, the believers who had been scattered during the persecution after Stephen’s death traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch of Syria. They preached the word of God, but only to Jews. 20 However, some of the believers who went to Antioch from Cyprus and Cyrene began preaching to the Gentiles[f] about the Lord Jesus. 21 The power of the Lord was with them, and a large number of these Gentiles believed and turned to the Lord.

Explain – The Holy Spirit began to lead believers to share the Gospel with all people including gentiles and large number of Gentiles were saved.  Peter was led to minister to Gentiles in Chapter 10, also believers that had been scattered by fleeing from persecution were driven into Gentile communities and led to share the Gospel with the Gentiles there. 

Apply – The Lord will lead us out of our comfort zone sometimes.  We must surrender our will and prejudice to follow the will of the Lord as being led by the Holy Spirit.  He will lead us unto all Truth and to His good works. 

Respond – Lord, help me to see with Your eyes and follow Your ways always.  Help me to be a faithful and obedient servant for You.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 10

Highlight - Acts 10 New Living Translation

34 Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. 35 In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right. 

…44 Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message. 45 The Jewish believers[e] who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. 46 For they heard them speaking in other tongues[f] and praising God. Then Peter asked, 47 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?” 48 So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.

Explain – Acts Chapter 10 describes the visions of Cornelius and Peter which compelled them to come together.  Peter saw that the Gospel was for everyone, God shows no favoritism.  Peter preached to the gentiles and they were filled with the Holy Spirit just as had happened with the believing Jews. 

Apply – There is no place for prejudice in the Body of Christ.  We must follow the Holy Spirit as He will lead us into all Truth.  We must be faithfully obedient in all of our ways.

Respond – Lord, help me to be all I can be in You.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 9

Highlight - Acts 9 New Living Translation

36 There was a believer in Joppa named Tabitha (which in Greek is Dorcas). She was always doing kind things for others and helping the poor. 37 About this time she became ill and died. Her body was washed for burial and laid in an upstairs room. 38 But the believers had heard that Peter was nearby at Lydda, so they sent two men to beg him, “Please come as soon as possible!”     39 So Peter returned with them; and as soon as he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room. The room was filled with widows who were weeping and showing him the coats and other clothes Dorcas had made for them. 40 But Peter asked them all to leave the room; then he knelt and prayed. Turning to the body he said, “Get up, Tabitha.” And she opened her eyes! When she saw Peter, she sat up! 41 He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then he called in the widows and all the believers, and he presented her to them alive. 42 The news spread through the whole town, and many believed in the Lord. 43 And Peter stayed a long time in Joppa, living with Simon, a tanner of hides.

Explain – Acts Chapter 9 includes the conversion of Saul, later to be known as Paul, on the road to Damascus.  This chapter also has the raising of Tabitha from death, which I am highlighting here.  Tabitha was a believer in Joppa that performed good works for the poor.  She died and was prepared for burial when some people sent for Peter.  Peter cleared the room, prayed, and asked Tabitha to get up and she rose from the dead. There are three important facts of this story for us to apply:

1)     Tabitha’s faithful work with the poor.

2)     The faith of the other believers to call for Peter to come.

3)     Peter’s obedience to come and pray for her.

4)     The salvation of many because of the miracle.

Apply – We must live in faithful obedience so that we can perform our calling in the Lord as Tabitha did.  We must have faith to call on the Lord in a time of need, if directed to call for help, to do so. We must be obedient should we be asked to come. Our obedience will lead to fruit in the kingdom of God.

Respond – Lord help me to be faithfully obedient like Tabitha, the other believers, and Peter who were all operating in Your will to produce many salvations for Your kingdom.  I seek to abide in You, to follow You faithfully and obediently.

HEAR Journaling - Acts Chapter 8

Highlight - Acts 8 New Living Translation

9 A man named Simon had been a sorcerer there for many years, amazing the people of Samaria and claiming to be someone great. 10 Everyone, from the least to the greatest, often spoke of him as “the Great One—the Power of God.” 11 They listened closely to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his magic.

12 But now the people believed Philip’s message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized. 13 Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed.

14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. 15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. 19 “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!”

20 But Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought! 21 You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God. 22 Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts, 23 for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.”

24 “Pray to the Lord for me,” Simon exclaimed, “that these terrible things you’ve said won’t happen to me!”

Explain – Simon evidently recited a sinners prayer and was baptized, but his heart was not right with God.  The Holy Spirit was not available to him because of his heart.  His motives were for himself, not a full repentance and acceptance of Jesus as Lord and Savior.  He was full of bitter jealousy and held captive by sin.  Peter told sorcerer Simon to “Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord.”  

Apply – We too can fool ourselves into thinking that our hearts are right with God when we truly have not received Him as Lord and Savior.  We must do as Peter advised Sorcerer Simon, “Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord.”  Then as Romans 10:9-10 NLT says:

9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. 

Respond – Lord I am so thankful that You are truly my Lord and Savior.  I pray for my whole house, all my generations, all my extended families and all their generations to truly know You as Lord and Savior.
