    HEAR Journaling -  Mark Chapter 14
     
    Highlight - Mark 14 New Living Translation
    10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
    …17 In the evening Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 As they were at the table[c] eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”  19 Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”  20 He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me. 21 For the Son of Man[d] must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”
                
    Explain – Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him, but at the Last Supper Jesus explained to the twelve that one of them would betray Him.  They each asked in turn, “Am I the one?”  Fascinating that their first thought was could it be me rather than accusing another disciple.  The disciples had been with Jesus over two years at this point, but they didn’t have confidence in their own hearts.
     
    Apply – We should examine our hearts honestly to determine what our response would be if Jesus asked us if we would deny Him.  Perhaps we should recommit ourselves to Him with fervent determination for abide in Him and faithfully and obediently follow Him always.
     
    Respond – Lord, I humbly ask You to reveal areas of my life that need attention, to be brought in line with Your will.  I recommit myself to You, to strive to abide in You and faithfully and obediently follow You always.

    14 “The day is coming when you will see the sacrilegious object that causes desecration[e] standing where he[f]should not be.” (Reader, pay attention!) “Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. 
    …19 For there will be greater anguish in those days than at any time since God created the world. And it will never be so great again. 20 In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity, not a single person will survive. But for the sake of his chosen ones he has shortened those days.
    21 “Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it. 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones. 23 Watch out! I have warned you about this ahead of time!  24 “At that time, after the anguish of those days,
    the sun will be darkened,    the moon will give no light,25 the stars will fall from the sky,    and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.[g]
    26 Then everyone will see the Son of Man[h] coming on the clouds with great power and glory.[i] 27 And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world[j]—from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven.
    28 “Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. 29 In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that his return is very near, right at the door. 30 I tell you the truth, this generation[k] will not pass from the scene before all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.
    32 “However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. 33 And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert[l]!
                
    Explain – Jesus explains to the disciples about the coming troubling times, but He is also explaining end times events that apply to everyone as well.  He says that He will send out angles to gather His chosen ones from all over the world.  He cautions that no one knows the day and time, but people who are paying attention will recognize the change like changing seasons.  Stay alert, He says.
     
    Apply – We need to abide in Him as He abides in us, obediently and faithfully follow Him moment by moment so that we will not be caught off guard or lured from His will.  We must stay alert with the mind of God because we can clearly see the changes in the societies of this world, He is surely coming to get us if not in the rapture He will see us after our passing from this world.  He will great us either way, hallelujah!  Let’s be ready!
     
    Respond – Lord, thank You for Your Word, Your warnings, and Your loving guidance into all Truth.  I seek to follow You, faithfully and obediently.

    29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. 30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’[g] 31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[h] No other commandment is greater than these.”
     
    Explain – Jesus explains the most important commandments, to love God with all our hearts, soul, mind, and our strength.  Secondly to love our neighbor as ourselves.  No other commandment is greater than these.
     
    Apply – To truly love and serve our neighbor we must first love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength.  We must abide in Him as He abides in us and faithfully and obediently follow His direction to love and to serve others.
     
    Respond – Lord, help me truly love You with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength.  I strive to abide in You as You abide in me and I strive to follow Your direction faithfully and obediently always.

    Jesus Clears the Temple
    15 When they arrived back in Jerusalem, Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people buying and selling animals for sacrifices. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves, 16 and he stopped everyone from using the Temple as a marketplace.[c] 17 He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”[d]
    18 When the leading priests and teachers of religious law heard what Jesus had done, they began planning how to kill him. But they were afraid of him because the people were so amazed at his teaching.
                
    Explain – Jesus clears money changers and vendors from the temple saying that His Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations.  He said that they had turned it into a den of thieves.
     
    Apply – We can apply this truth in our lives when we realize that our body became a Temple of Christ when we were born again.  
     
    We must take a good look at ourselves, are we a Temple of prayer or have we defiled our body, the temple of Christ?  If so, we need to clear out our Temple and consecrate ourselves to the Lord again.
     
    Respond – Lord, show me areas in my life that require repair and cleaning to become honorable in Your sight.  Help me keep myself holy in You and for You.

    35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do us a favor.”
    …41 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. 42 So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. 43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
     
    Explain – Jesus explains to His disciples that they must be servant leaders, they are to care for others over themselves just as Jesus lived a life of service to others.
     
    Apply – This is thinking contrary of the worldly selfish thinking of people that will do anything to better themselves while forsaking others.  That is not God’s way.  The Holy Spirit will provide the fruit of the Spirit in our lives when we faithfully and obediently follow Him.   The riches and prestige of this life will be gone when we cross over to the loving arms of Jesus.   Let’s live a faithful and obedient life in Him to hear, Well done thy good and faithful servant.
     
    Respond – Lord, thank You for Your Truth, and thank You Holy Spirit for living in me and guiding me unto Your Truth that has truly set me free.  I pray for all that do not know You.

    30 Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there, 31 for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.” 32 They didn’t understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant.         
     
    Explain – Jesus explained clearly that He was to be betrayed, killed, and would rise again on the third day.  The disciples did not understand and did not ask for clarification.
     
    Apply – We now understand clearly that Jesus was indeed crucified, died, and rose on the third day just as he predicted, for us so that we could be free of sin and have a living relationship with Him.  The disciples didn’t ask, but we should not be afraid to ask Him about anything.  He is with us.
     
    Respond – Lord, thank You for Your provision of my salvation and life with You and in You.  I pray for all those that do not know You, to seek You and find You.

    Explain – Jesus explains that a willful follower must take up his cross and follow Him.  If people try to live life their own way, they will lose, but if they will give up their way of life for His way they will be saved.
     
    Apply – The Truth remains, we must be faithful and obedient followers to life our lives to the fullest in Him.
     
    Respond – Thank You Lord for Your provision for my life and for all believers and faithful followers.  Help me Lord to effectively apply the gifts that You have imparted to me to be all I can be in You.

    5 So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, “Why don’t your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony.”
    6 Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,
    ‘These people honor me with their lips,    but their hearts are far from me.7 Their worship is a farce,    for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’[d]
    8 For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”
    9 Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. 
    …14 Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand. 15 It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.[h]”
                
    Explain – Jesus explained to the Pharisees about their holding to tradition rather than God’s law.  He further explained that it isn’t what goes into a person’s body that defiles it but what comes from their heart.
     
    Apply - We must be careful to maintain our relationship with the Lord, abide in Him, obediently follow His ways, and not be misguided by false doctrines or traditions of men.
     
    Respond – Lord, examine my heart and show me what I need to change to be faithful and obedient in all I think, say, and do for Your glory.  Give me discernment to recognize false teachings and how I should respond to them.

    Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Disciples

    Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people. 7 And he called his twelve disciples together and began sending them out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evil[c] spirits. 8 He told them to take nothing for their journey except a walking stick—no food, no traveler’s bag, no money.[d] 9 He allowed them to wear sandals but not to take a change of clothes. 10 “Wherever you go,” he said, “stay in the same house until you leave town. 11 But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate.”  12 So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God. 13 And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil.

                

    Explain – Jesus sent His twelve disciples out, two by two, to minister around the region.  They were instructed not to take any extra provisions but to travel completely on faith.  They preached, cast out demons, and healed many people.

     

    Apply – God has anointed us.  We must abide in the Holy Spirit and walk in faith daily following His guidance and provision.  We must walk in the faith of the disciples that went into the unknown prepared only with their faith.  The devil, our enemy, would have us believe that we aren’t ready, but we must follow the Holy Spirit and not be drawn away by our fleshly understanding.

     

    Respond – Lord, help me to be all I can be in You.  Lead me not to temptation but Your will be completed in my life for Your glory.

    Highlight - Mark Chapter 5 New Living Translation
    [Three Healings in Mark Chapter 5]
    [The Demon Possessed Man] …18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. 19 But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” 20 So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns[c] of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them.
     
    [The Woman with Blood Issue] …33 Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.”
     
    [Dead Daughter of Jairus] …42 And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. 43 Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat.
     
    Explain – There are three healings in Mark Chapter 5, 1) The Demon Possessed Man, 2) The Woman With Blood Issue, and 3) the Dead Daughter of Jairus.  Note the different instructions that Jesus gave for each of these healing miracles:
    1)     Jesus told the man to go home to his family and tell them everything and the man went on to the ten towns of the region proclaiming Jesus.
    2)     Jesus told the woman to go in peace, no mention of telling or not telling and there is no record of what the woman went on to do.  However we can assume that anyone that knew her would be amazed at her healing.
    3)     Jairus and his wife were instructed not to tell anyone about the healing.  The whole town already knew the daughter was dead, they laughed at Jesus going to minister to the dead girl, so the silence of Jairus and his wife would only encourage the intrigue of the situation.
    Apply – The application I see in this is Jesus can help in every situation to anyone that will come to Him.  Nothing is impossible with Him.  Faith is truly important, but in these three cases faith was not present in the demon possessed man, faith was strong in the woman with issue of blood and Jairus had faith to seek Jesus.  We need to seek Him too. 
     
    Respond – Lord, I thank You, and continue to seek You, Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction so that I may be all I can be in You.
