HEAR Journaling -  Mark Chapter 4

Highlight - Mark 4 New Living Translation

Explain – Jesus explains the Parable of the Sower’s four types of soil (the condition of a person’s heart to receive), to receive seed (which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ), the resulting harvest (which is sinners receiving the Gospel, salvation, and becoming productive disciples in and for the Lord):

Apply – There are active and productive things we can do to maintain good soil, strong lives in the Lord:

1)     Give ourselves totally and completely to Jesus Christ.

·       Romans 10:9-10 NLT 9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

2)     Maintain a living relationship with the Lord in prayer and reading the Word daily.

·       Romans 10:17 NLT 17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

3)     Faithfully and obediently following the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all we think, say, and do.

·       Galatians 5:16-18 NLT 16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

4)     Put on the full armor of God 

·       (Ephesians 6:10-18 NLT)

5)     Reject the lies from our enemy that would lead us astray.

·       1 Peter 5:8 NLT 8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.

6)     Endure to the end and be saved!

·       Matthew 24:13-14 NLT 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations[c] will hear it; and then the end will come.

Respond  - Lord, thank You for my salvation, for my life in and through You Holy Spirit.  I strive to maintain an active relationship directed to follow You obediently and faithfully.  I depend on the full armor of God that I wear daily, praying consistently in the Spirit staying alert for temptations that try to thwart our great relationship.  I strive to endure to the end.  I pray for me and my whole house, all my generations and extended families and their generations in Jesus Name.

Highlight - Proverbs 31 New Living Translation

1The sayings of King Lemuel contain this message,[a] which his mother taught him

…4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine. Rulers should not crave alcohol.
5 For if they drink, they may forget the law and not give justice to the oppressed.
6 Alcohol is for the dying, and wine for those in bitter distress.
7 Let them drink to forget their poverty and remember their troubles no more.

Explain – King Lemuel’s proverb cautions about the danger of alcohol, which will distract from duties and responsibilities.  This says that alcohol is for the dying and for those in bitter distress, in other words for medicinal purposes.

Apply – The application for me is clear.  I trust in the Lord with all my heart, I do not yield to my own understanding, if He guides me to drink alcohol, I will, if He leads me to abstain – I will abstain.  I will not try to rationalize if this is right or wrong, nor challenge anyone else, I will trust in the Lord alone.

Respond – Lord, thank You for providing knowledge, wisdom, understanding and instruction through the indwelling Holy Spirit.  I strive to honor You with my life, to obediently follow You in all I think, say and do, to be all that I can be in You.

Highlight - Proverbs 30 New Living Translation

1 The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh contain this message.[a]

…7 O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die.
8 First, help me never to tell a lie. 
    Second, give me neither poverty nor riches!    Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.
9 For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?”
    And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.

Explain – These sayings of Agur son of Jakeh contain this curious prayer for two things, 1) to never tell a lie, and 2) to receive just enough to live so that he would not be tempted to insult God’s holy name.

Apply – Agur clearly understood his sinful nature.  He feared what he might do if tempted.  He did not know the Lord Jesus since this was centuries before the birth of Jesus.  Jesus has made a way for us, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit we need not fear temptation, as it may come He will always guide us, as we are reminded in 1 Corinthians:

3 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10 New Living Translation

Respond:  Lord, thank You Holy Spirit, for guiding me unto all truth.  I fear no evil, but will abide in You as You abide in me so that I can withstand temptation and be all I can be in You.

Highlight - Proverbs 29 New Living Translation

1 Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.
11 Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.

18 When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild. But whoever obeys the law is joyful.

22 An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.

23 Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.

Explain  - These verses speak to wise living, accepting criticism and applying God’s remedies.  The wise will not vent their anger, but maintain spiritual control.  Pride is a weakness that needs to be brought under control of the Holy Spirit.

Apply – We apply these truths by abiding in the Lord as He guides us unto all Truth.  Especially in our pride and anger we should relinquish our will to God and let Him lead us unto His controlled behavior.

Respond – Lord, help me as I seek to abide in You, to allow You to train up my mind, soul, and flesh to be as You would have me be.

Highlight – Proverbs Chapter 28 New Living Translation

4 To reject the law is to praise the wicked; to obey the law is to fight them.

5 Evil people don’t understand justice, but those who follow the Lord understand completely.

9 God detests the prayers of a person who ignores the law.

10 Those who lead good people along an evil path will fall into their own trap, but the honest will inherit good things.

13 People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.

26 Those who trust their own insight are foolish, but anyone who walks in wisdom is safe.

Explain – These verses point to the power of following the “law”, which means to follow the ways of the Lord.  Jesus explained about the law in Matthew:

17 “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. 19 So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 5:17-19 NLT

37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[e] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[f] 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” 

Matthew 22:37-40 NLT

Apply – We can apply these truths by loving the Lord with all our hear, our soul, and our mind.  We must abide in the Lord and faithfully and obediently follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in all we think, say, and do.

Respond – Lord, I recommit myself to You, to abide in You; to follow faithfully and obediently the leading of You, Holy Spirit, in all I think, say, and do.  I pray for those that do not know and live for You.

10 Never abandon a friend— either yours or your father’s. When disaster strikes, you won’t have to ask your brother for assistance. It’s better to go to a neighbor than to a brother who lives far away.

…17 As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.

Explain – These verses from Proverbs Chapter 27 show the value of a true, sincere friend. Someone that can provide wise council, useful criticism.  Someone that will be there to help in time of need.  Someone that will strengthen you as iron sharpens iron.  

Apply – The application is to be a true, sincere friend as well as appreciate and nurture valuable friendships for each other’s benefit.

Respond – Lord, help me be a valuable, true, sincere friend to those friends that You have blessed me to know.
