HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 17

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight: Proverbs 17 New Life Version

6 Grandchildren are the pride and joy of old men and a son is proud of his father.

…10 A man of understanding learns more from being told the right thing to do than a fool learns from being beaten a hundred times.

…15 He who says that the sinful are right, and he who says those who do right are wrong, both are hated by the Lord.

…19 He who loves sin loves making trouble. He who opens his door wide for trouble is looking for a way to be destroyed.

…22 A glad heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.

…24 Wisdom is with the one who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.

…27 He who is careful in what he says has much learning, and he who has a quiet spirit is a man of understanding.

Explain -   Proverbs 17 contains much wisdom.  Being a proud Papa I had to include verse 6, “Grandchildren are the pride and joy of old men, and a son is proud of his father.”  I know my grandsons are proud of their fathers as I am proud of them all.  This remaining sampling of verses include some special wisdom:

·       A man of understanding learns more from being told than a fool learns from being beaten.

·       Those saying bad is good and good is bad are hated by God.

·       Loving sin is making a way for trouble. A glad heart (from being filled with the Holy Spirit and abiding in Him) is good medicine.

·       Wisdom is derived from God’s understanding.

·       Be careful what you say, have a quiet spirit, and learn much.

Apply – We should apply God’s wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction to our lives by first accepting Him as Lord and Savior, then being filled by the Holy Spirit and strive to abide in Him as He abides in us.  He will lead us unto all Truth as we seek Him daily, consistently, and continuously.

Respond – Lord , I strive to apply Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction to my life,  by first recommitting myself to You, accepting You as Lord and Savior.  I am indwelt by You, Holy Spirit, and I strive to abide in You as You abide in me.  I am eager to follow You as You lead me unto all Truth as I seek You daily, consistently, and continuously.

HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 16

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight - Proverbs 16 New Living Translation

1 We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer.

2 People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives.

3 Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.

4 The Lord has made everything for his own purposes, even the wicked for a day of disaster.

…9 We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

…16 How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!

17 The path of the virtuous leads away from evil; whoever follows that path is safe.

18 Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.

…25 There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.

Explain – Proverbs 16 has much about the path to take, that we have choices to make on the plans we make and the path we take.  The wise person will make sure their plans and actions are aligned with the Lord’s will. Pridefulness will lead to destruction, people must not lean on their own understanding, but seek His will and focus and do those things.  People can reason a way that looks good, but may lead to destruction.  Keep on God’s path, His will and succeed.

Apply – Still true today.  The world brings many things that look right, many temptations to follow our fleshly desires.  We need to seek God first at the start of each day (Matthew 6:33), leaning not on our own understanding, but trusting and acknowledging Him in all of our ways (Proverbs 3:5-6).  A profitable, joyful, and effective life is only possible with a living relationship with the Living God.

Respond – Lord, I thank You for all You are, for all You do, and continue to strive to abide in You and with You, denying my ways and seeking Your will, embracing You and Your will, and with Your help to become all I can be in You.

HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 15

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight Proverbs 15 New Living Translation

15 A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.

2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness.

3 The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.

4 Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

… 11 Even Death and Destruction[b] hold no secrets from the Lord. How much more does he know the human heart!

… 28 The heart of the godly thinks carefully before speaking; the mouth of the wicked overflows with evil words.

… 33 Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor.

Explain – Proverbs 15 focuses on wise living.  A gentle answer deflects anger and the tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing.  The heart of the godly think before speaking.  The fear, or respect, of the Lord teaches wisdom and humility precedes honor. The Lord can see everywhere including each and every human heart. Even Death and Destruction hold no secrets from the Lord.

Apply – We should not waste time deceiving ourselves as we attempt the impossible task to deceive God.  We must repent and accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior.  Submit to the will of the Holy Spirit as He leads us unto all Truth.  Then we will be capable of living godly lives with gentle and loving conversation.

Respond – Lord I recommit my life to You as my Lord and Savior.  I will strive to follow You, Holy Spirit, consistently and continuously as You lead me to Your Truth.  Thank You, in Jesus Name!

Hear2See Podcast Season 1, Episode 15 HEAR Journaling Proverbs Chapter 14

HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 14

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight Proverbs 14 New Living Translation

2 Those who follow the right path fear the Lord; those who take the wrong path despise him.

… 6 A mocker seeks wisdom and never finds it, but knowledge comes easily to those with understanding.

… 12 There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.

… 22 If you plan to do evil, you will be lost; if you plan to do good, you will receive unfailing love and faithfulness.

… 26 Those who fear the Lord are secure; he will be a refuge for their children.

… 29 People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness.

30 A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.

Explain – Each verse in Proverbs 14 contains truth.  These selected verses focus on our own knowledge and understanding that can keep us on the right path.  We will have positive plans to do good, avoiding the path that is not right.  We will fear the Lord, that is to say we will respect His wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction that will keep us and our households secure.  We will be at peace and control anger for healthful living.

Apply – This is only possible by maintaining our relationship with the Lord as it should be, the most important relationship we have in our entire lives.  We must honor Him with our time, attention, prayerful communication, steadfast reading and applying His Word so that we can be all that He can help us be.

Respond - This is only possible for me by maintaining my relationship with You, Lord, knowing that my relationship with You is the most important relationship I have.  I will honor You with my time, attention, prayerful communication, striving to read and applying Your Word so that I can be all that You can help me be.  Thank You Lord!

HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 13

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight - Proverbs 13 New Living Translation

16 Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.

17 An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing.

18 If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored.

19 It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them.

20 Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.

21 Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous.

22 Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.

23 A poor person’s farm may produce much food, but injustice sweeps it all away.

24 Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

25 The godly eat to their hearts’ content, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.

Explain – Proverbs 13 explains the benefit of being wise, being godly and resisting the temptation of the world that would lead to destruction.

Apply – We should seek God daily, learn and apply wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction as the Holy Spirit leads us unto all Truth.

Respond – Lord, I seek You daily to learn and apply Your wisdom, Your knowledge, Your understanding and Your instruction as You, Holy Spirit, leads me unto all Truth.

HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 12

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight - Proverbs 12 New Living Translation

12 To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction.

…
18 Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.

19 Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed.

20 Deceit fills hearts that are plotting evil; joy fills hearts that are planning peace!

21 No harm comes to the godly, but the wicked have their fill of trouble.

22 The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.

23 The wise don’t make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness.
24 Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave.

25 Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.

26 The godly give good advice to their friends;[a] the wicked lead them astray.

Explain – Proverbs Chapter 12 focuses on more contrasts between the wise and the foolish.  Look at the positive statements from the verses above:

·       We must love discipline to learn.

·       If we are wise, our words will bring healing.

·       Truthful words stand the test of time.

·       Joy will fill our hearts when we are planning peace.

·       No real harm will come to us as wise Godly people.

·       We will live with Jesus through eternity.

·       He delights when we tell the truth.

·       When we are wise we do not show off our knowledge.

·       If we work hard we can become a leader.

·       When we speak an encouraging word, we can cheer people up.

·       We should give good advice to our friends.

Apply – There is much wisdom in seeking to be wise and avoid the foolish things in life that will lead to destruction.

Respond – Lord thank You for these proverbs, the book of wisdom.  I strive to be wise in You Lord.

HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 11

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight - Proverbs 11 New Living Translation

3 Honesty guides good people; dishonesty destroys treacherous people.

4 Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death.

5 The godly are directed by honesty; the wicked fall beneath their load of sin.

6 The godliness of good people rescues them; the ambition of treacherous people traps them.

7 When the wicked die, their hopes die with them, for they rely on their own feeble strength.

8 The godly are rescued from trouble, and it falls on the wicked instead.

…

14 Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers.

…

27 If you search for good, you will find favor; but if you search for evil, it will find you!

Explain – Proverbs Chapter 11 has sentences with contrasts between wise and good people with those of foolish and wicked people.

Apply – We can learn from these to be honest, good, and generous.  We should seek wise leadership and council.  We will find favor in the Lord with our faithful obedience to His instruction.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your wise instruction. Help me to apply these truths to my life to be all I can be in You!

HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 10

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight - Proverbs 10 New Living Translation

8The wise are glad to be instructed, but babbling fools fall flat on their faces.

…

11 The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.

…

25 When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.

…

27Fear of the Lord lengthens one’s life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.

…

29 The way of the Lord is a stronghold to those with integrity, but it destroys the wicked.

…

31 The mouth of the godly person gives wise advice, but the tongue that deceives will be cut off.

32 The lips of the godly speak helpful words, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words.

Explain – Proverbs Chapter 10 has contrasting principles between good and evil, between the wise and foolish. The wise are glad to be instructed, have a lasting foundation, enjoy a long and prosperous life, have a stronghold with the Lord, are able to give wise advice and helpful words to others.  Why would anyone want to go the way of the fool?

Apply – We should seek God, His righteousness so that we can benefit from His wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction that provides a strong foundation and shelter from the ways of the fool.

Respond – Lord, thank You for all You are and all You do.  Help me and my house, all my generations, all our extended families and their generations to abide in You to obtain Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction that provides a strong foundation and shelter from the ways of the fool.

HEAR Journaling  Proverbs Chapter 9

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight - Proverbs 9:7-12 New Life Translation

7 Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt.
8 So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you.
9 Instruct the wise,  and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more.

10 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom.  Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.

11 Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life.

12 If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit.  If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.

Explain – The wisdom found in Proverbs chapter 9 instructs not to waste time trying to correct a mocker because they will only hate you.  Correct the wise and they will prosper.  The fear, or respect, of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Lord results in good judgement which will add years to your life and you will benefit from Wisdom.  The people that scorn wisdom will suffer.

Apply – We must seek the Lord with all our heart.  Uplift each other to gain wisdom and reap the rewards of faithfully and obediently following the Holy Spirit to obtain His wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction that will benefit ourselves and others.

Respond – Lord I am diligently seeking You, Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction.  Help me to be all that I can be in You.

The Book of Wisdom

Highlight - Proverbs 8 New King James Version

The Excellence of Wisdom

8 Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice?

2 She takes her stand on the top of the [a]high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet.

3 She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors:

4 “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men.

5 O you [b]simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart.

6 Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things;

7 For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.

9 They are all plain to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge.

10 Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold;

11 For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

…

17 I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me.

…

22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old.
23 I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.

…

32 “Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it.
34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.

35 For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the Lord;

36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death.”

Explain – Solomon states that wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction of the Lord are available to anyone that will listen, to those that seek Him will find wisdom that has existed before creation.  God’s truth is more valuable than gold or rubies, His truth will lead people to favor from the Lord.  Note that lies and wickedness came after creation.

Apply – We must abide in the Holy Spirit, seek His wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction consistently and constantly to find life and favor from the Lord.  Anyone that sins against Him wrongs their own soul.

Respond – Lord, I seek to abide in You, to seek Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding, instruction and revelation consistently and continuously through eternity.
