Highlight - Proverbs Chapter 26 New Living Translation (NLT)

4 Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools, or you will become as foolish as they are.

5 Be sure to answer the foolish arguments of fools, or they will become wise in their own estimation.

Explain – Verse four seems to be a contradiction with verse 5, so I checked with some other translations to compare for some insight:

                  New King James Version (NKJV)

4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Lest you also be like him.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own eyes.

Amplified Bible (AMP)

4 Do not answer [nor pretend to agree with the frivolous comments of] a [closed-minded] fool according to his folly, Otherwise you, even you, will be like him.
5 Answer [and correct the erroneous concepts of] a fool according to his folly, Otherwise he will be wise in his own eyes [if he thinks you agree with him].

The Amplified Bible version helps me understand as the Holy Spirit leads me to His truth, we are to not agree, nor pretend to agree, with a fool in his folly, but should rightly correct the fool.

Apply – We need to apply this with the wisdom that can only come from the Holy Spirit.  We must abide in Him, and He will direct our every path.  Should He direct us to talk with a fool, He will provide the wisdom and direction for our responses with a fool.  We should not mock a fool by agreeing with foolishness, nor contend with an argument but by His direction.

Respond – Lord I seek to abide in You as You abide in me, help me to be faithfully obedient to Your direction when talking with lost people.

Highlight - Proverbs 25 New Living Translation

11 Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket.

12 To one who listens, valid criticism is like a gold earring or other gold jewelry.

13a Trustworthy messengers refresh like snow in summer. 

Explain – Timely advice from a Godly, trusted source is most valuable.  One must listen and consider valid criticism and take it to the Lord for full benefit.  

Apply – To receive sound Godly advice we must know and cherish good Godly people that can be trusted to share encouragement as well as beneficial criticism.  We will be wise to seek God’s leading in giving advice so as to be good Godly source.

Respond – Lord, help me seek wise counsel and always seek You in all things.  Help me to apply Your corrections in my life to be all that I can be in You!  Help me to provide Godly advice under Your direction and refrain from sharing my own advice.  Thank You Lord for Your knowledge, wisdom, understanding and instruction.

Highlight - Proverbs 24 New Living Translation

…17 Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall; don’t be happy when they stumble.18 For the Lord will be displeased with you and will turn his anger away from them.

Explain – I was struck with this verse, it is very curious to me.  Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall?  I think of World War II, the Evil Axis forces falling and the world rejoicing.  I think of Osama Bin Laden, the organizer of the 9-11 attacks, falling and the world rejoicing.  I think of two football rivals, and one losing and the others gloating.

 Proverbs tells us that God is not pleased with these actions.

Apply – I struggle trying to understand this reasoning, this seems so unnatural to me.  How can we possibly not cheer when someone that has oppressed us falls?  I am reminded that we are to not trust our own understanding:

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.6 Seek his will in all you do,  and he will show you which path to take.

43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’[q] and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies![r] Pray for those who persecute you! 

Matthew 5 NLT

Respond – I must trust in You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in everything I think, say, and do so that You can impart Your knowledge, Your Wisdom, Your Understanding, and Your Instruction.

12 Commit yourself to instruction; listen carefully to words of knowledge.

13 Don’t fail to discipline your children. The rod of punishment won’t kill them.

14 Physical discipline may well save them from death.[c]

15 My child,[d] if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice!

16 Everything in me will celebrate when you speak what is right.

Explain – We are to be obedient children of God as we train up our own children to honor and respect Him as their Lord and Savior.  Parents will rejoice when their children live faithful, obedient lives, when they speak and live under the leadership of God, as He will be joyful at their faithful obedience as well.

Apply - We should seek to be obedient children of God as we are directed by the Holy Spirit to train up our own children to honor and respect Him as their Lord and Savior.  We will rejoice when our children live faithful, obedient lives, when they speak and live under the leadership of God.  God will be joyful at our faithful obedience as well.

Respond – I will seek to be faithfully obedient as I follow Your leading, Holy Spirit. I pray that my house, my children, and grandchildren live faithful, obedient lives. I know You, Lord, are joyful at our faithful obedience in You.

Explain – Solomon wrote these words of wisdom, captured in Proverbs, for those that followed him.  He advises to remember the sayings, keep them in your heart and on your lips so that you will trust in the Lord.

Apply – We must apply our hearts to these words of wisdom and instruction.  We must speak these words of life applying our faith to build our trust in the Lord.  We will know the Truth who will make us free.

Respond – I will apply my heart to these words of wisdom and instruction.  I will speak these words of life applying my faith to build my trust in the Lord.  I will know the Truth who will make and keep me free.

Explain – People think, say, and do what is right in their own heart, but the Lord examines and knows all.  We please the Lord when we deny ourselves and do what is right in Him. People that seek Him find life, righteousness, and honor.  The Lord’s wisdom supersedes any and all human wisdom.

Apply – We will be wise to seek the Lord, follow His ways and gain life, righteousness, and honor.  We will please the Lord as well as ensure the best life that we can know though Him.

Respond – I will seek to be wise, to seek the Lord, follow His ways and gain life, righteousness, and honor.  I strive to abide in Him, please the Lord with my faithfulness as well as ensure the best life that I can know though Him.

Apply  - We must seek good advice from sources directed by the Holy Spirit.  We must continuously walk with integrity relying on the Lord’s wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction and following the Lord’s path.  We must understand that the Lord’s light exposes every hidden motive, so we must be true to God and ourselves in all we do.

Explain – Seeking wisdom will always benefit.  Liars will always be punished.  Faithful obedience to God will bring wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction. Seek good advice from good Godly sources.  The respect of the Lord leads to life, security, and protection.

Apply – We need to seek and maintain an active relationship with God.  Seek His wisdom, His knowledge, His understanding, and His instruction.  Then we must act in accordance with His will applying all that we have learned.

Respond – Lord, I seek to maintain an active relationship with You.  Seek Your wisdom, Your knowledge, Your understanding, and Your instruction.  I strive to act in accordance with Your will applying all that I have learned.

22 The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord.

…24 There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.

Explain – Wise guidance from Proverbs Chapter 18, much focused on the power of words to build up or destroy.  God provides a strong fortress for anyone that will yield to Him.  Intelligent people will learn.  Arguments cause division, we must yield to the Lord to be able to maintain strong friendships.  

Apply – We must maintain a strong relationship with the Lord to have control over our tongues and attitudes which will provide relationships with our spouse, friends and everyone that are filled with the fruit of the spirit: 

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 

Galatians 5:22-23 English Standard Version

Respond – Lord, I strive to abide in You as You abide in me.  Help me to be all that I can be in You to produce the fruit of Your Spirit.
